Elon College, due to war conditions
and defense industries, this year
makes the most drastic faculty
changes in the history of the school
insofar as numbers are concerned.
Ten replacements and additions have
been made during the summer.
Dr. McClure is a native of Illinois.
He completed his A. B. at Maryville
College, Tenn., and his M. A. degree
at Ohio State. Form there he went
to Yale for graduate work and more
recently obtained his Ph.D. in Eng
lish from the University of Indiana.
He is especially trained in dramatics.
Coach J. I., Pierce, a graduate of
High Point College, attended the Uni
versity of North Carolina where he
obtained his Master’s degree in phy-
sicaU education in 1940.
Professor Irving D. Bartley who
has been appointed head of the music
department comes from New Mexico
Highalnds University, Las Vegas, N.
M. He is originally from Baldwin,
Kansas.
Herbert F. Donaldson, recently of
New York where he has been asso
ciated with the music department of
Stephens College, will teach piano.
Miss Helen Boyd, former director
of religious education activities at
the Womans College University of
North Carolina, has traveled widely
throughout the nation engaged in re
ligious activities of the Congrega
tional and Christian churches.
Miss Boyd is originally from
Seattle, Washington. At first she en
tered the field of religious education
as Girl Reserve Secretary of the Y.
W.C.A. She was later transferred to
Musekgon, Mich., where she remained
for two years. It was then that she
entered Chicago Theological Semi
nary where she finished part of her
graduate work. Soon after she serv
ed as state director of religious edu
cation at Lansing, Michigan.
Miss Violet Hoffman, new addition
to the Business Department, is a gra
duate of Elon. While at Elon, Miss
Hoffman made an outstanding record
as a student. For the past two years
she has taught in the Norlina High
School.
^ Miss Margaret Casto comes to us
from Huntington, West Virginia. For
the past nine years she has beeri em
ployed in the Math department of
high schools throughout West Vir
ginia.
Dr. Arthur Francis Smullyan, head
of the math department, received his
A. B. degree in 1936 at the City Col
lege of New York. He then attended
Columbia University for two years. In
1941 he received his M. A. degree at
Harvard and his Ph.D in 1941 from
the same institution.
