SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1942 MAROON AND GOLD PAGE THREE 5x?S^ Eagles Defeat North North Above Is an action shot from last weeks. Eagle North North encounter in which the league- leading Eagles romped to a 21-6 victory to further their pennant hopes. Zeissner of the Eagles is shown taking the ball on a reverse go ing around right end with Hunt ley and Latta of North North close on his heels. The play netted a first down. Also rushing in are Gill, Mc Cauley, Brown, Garrett, Prit chard, Forbes, and Foushee. Rambling With CHARLIE MANN Well, we and the column strayed out to enjoy some battles on the in tramural gridiron and we didn’t get lost in the crowd. We looked in all the dark corners but we could find only a few spectators. We well know that time is scarce and studies long, but if the boys can find time to organize a team and to play, it seems that there could be many Arho could come out and cheer them on. A cheer from the side lines helps to keep up the spirit of a team and spirit is the making of any team. Few of the teams have faith ful supporters who come out to every game and are great boosters. If we would remember that going out helps us as well as it does the team, we might more readily go. We need the recreation and relaxation from studies and you will enjoy forgetting about classes and school for an afternoon while you cheer your team on to victory. Why not put away your troubles for awhile and go out and enjoy the intramural football games? LIVE AND LEARN Does anyone remember th\t it takes good officiating, sportsmanship and spirit to make any sport worthwhile and enjoyable? If no one does re member we hope that now you will give it some very serious thought and try to understand that it does. Not one of these three can make a sport what it should be but the three together do as good a job as can be done. We are not kicking the officiating of the intramural football games too hard, because it has usually been all right, but there is definitely room for improvement. It may be that this improvement will come in time and when that great teacher experience has graduated a class. We sincerely believe that living is learning, and without learning, living isn’t worthwhile, so carry on officials, striving always to improve. Good officiating is an essen tial to the intramural program and without it the program would be a failure. REMEMBER SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship, ever heard of it, or felt it? If you haven t heard of it, where have you been all your life?—and if you have never felt it, you have really missed something. Of course we can’t believe that all haven’t heard of it, but it is very doubtful if all have felt it. We need not tell you that sportsmanship is necessary to all sports, but we can say that more of it is badly needed at Elon. Maybe you can’t be a friend to all, but you can be a pnod sport even to your best enemies and find that you feel better, remember that we aren’t fighting the Japs hand to hand yet, so don’t your sportsmanship! DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP Finally we come to the spirit of the thing. If you don’t understand what we mean, it’s that certain something the Marines on Wake Island had and now have on the Solomons; that something the Russians in Stalingrad stopped the Germans with, and that feeling thM keeps the Chinese fighting. Maybe now you better understand what we mean and understand why it is so essential in our sports. If you are the underdog, don’t give up, fight on and with spirit you may win victory from what looked like certain defeat. Never say die, but keep fighting. „ ^ Oh yes spectators and supporters this is where you really enter the picture'and ’become a very essential need. When things begin to look dark and everything goes wrong, nothing helps more than a little cheering and encouragement. We trust that you shall see the great Importance of spirit in sports and how much that spirit depends on you. Just in case we haven’t made all quite clear we shall try to summarize it into a short, precise statement. We simply mean that not one or two of these three- good officiating, sportsmanship and spirit, can make a sport worthwhile ’and enjoyable, but that it takes all Olfee working together. Now that we know this, do you see any reason why it should not be put in prac tice? We definitely don’t! OUTSIDE THE CAMPUS WALL _ Well lets ramble out into the great world of sports for a few odds and ^nds w’ith the sport of kings, we find that rocket in horseflesh, Whirlaway is picking up some easy money. He picks up $10,000 for his owner simply iv trottiM around the track in the Pimlico Special. For reasons well known in racing circles he will have no competition. Easy picking we say! Please forget Rosco and Bosco Pick Here they are, friends (?), feeling like two ghosts, all hollow inside. They’re hungry. It’s the sad story of two wolves wlio chased a dear !) til Halloween night and then watched her fly away on her broom. No fcpd and fooled. The star gazers have really been having a hectic time and are soirte- what behind the eight ball. That love torch, the moon, witches, on practice flights before Halloween and roaming ghosts nearly drove the gaz ers nuts, (More nuts) and oiit of business. Everytime Rosco would locate a star through all the moon light a broomstick would come sailing out of (the) West and fly directly across it. Things got so bad he had to call out the Air Corps to rid the sky of witches so he could work. It didn’t cost him anything ’cause the pilots said it was good practice before going to work on some little yellow devils. Rosco again had great trouble when a brave young ghost, who after stealing the light from a lightning bug hired a witch to fly him up to the stars and there he began stealing the twinkle from the stars. After Rosco promised him a flashlight that he could snap on and off, the ghost gave the stars back their twinkles. Finally, Rosco was al le to find a little of the great knowledge of the stars aiid sent it to Bosco by moonbeam. Bosco had his troubles too and many times he considered taking the easy way out but he was told that he would hang for comrniting suicide, so he decided against it. His troubles came in form of ghosts, who claimed Eagles North North Brown RE Reynolds Forbes RT Qrey Pritchard C McAdams McCauley LT Bridges Chandler LE Garrett Zeissner QB Latta Gill HB Wheeless Coplin HE Huntley Perry FB Frazier Friday, October 23. the undefeat ed East liagle power house continued their perfect season by defeating North North. The Eagles running (rue to form, overran the North North team with a passing and running at- tack that was hard to stop. North North put up a gallant fight and finally drove over a touchdown in the fourth period. The Eagles gained the lead early in the first quarter with a safety by Brown and a touchdown by Perry. A second touchdown in the second quar ter by Coplin gave the Eagles a 14-0 lead at the half. A determined North North team began the second half and they held the Eagles scoreless in the third quarter. They were unable to push over a touchdown but put up a great defense. Coplin scored again for the Eagles in the fourth period and Per ry scored the extra point. Coming back with desperation the North team under the generalship of Latta push ed over a touchdown with Wheeless scoring. Latta and Wheeless in the back- field and Reynolds and Mc.Adams in the line were the spark plugs of the North North team. Zeissner, Perry, Coplin and Forbes led tlie Eagles in their victory of 21-6. The lineups: Eagles Nose Out Kappa Psi On Monday, October 19, the East Eagles and Kappa Psi Nu met in a football game which was provided with thrills galore. This game, pro bably the best seen here yet, was a real fight down to the finish. During the first quarter, it seemed that Kappa Psi was the better as the teams moved up and down the field, con stantly pushing each other back from the goal line. Neither had the punch to hit pay dirt until the second quar ter when Kappa Psi suddenly broke loose with constant completed passes from Nance to Hooper. Kappa Psi, so determined to down the highly fa vored, unbeaten Eagles, scored a little later with a pass from Nance to Mann in the end zone. The extra point was also added to help Kappa Psi’s cause. But the Eagles, probably the first time they had been behind all season, and spirited by this fact, came back with an equal amount of vigor to they were ghost writers. They would I score on a long pass from Zeissner to Now for the strange story of a boxer who lost a fight by a technical knockout in the fifth round while still in perfect condition, except for a vei^ unuLal thing In the early moments of the fight Red Burman s mouth piece slipped and lodged in his throat. The referee stopped the fight m the fifth because he was having trouble breathing. Watch your false teeth, they may choke you. » , * * Army Boston College, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Texas Christian Detroit, Ohio State and Tulsa, ten of the nations undefeated grid iron elevens go to battle this week-end. T. go through. have been okay except that they only wished to write ghost stories and would have nothing to do with star gazing. Bosco finally got rid of the ghosts by promising the bravest that they could haunt West Dorm, and Ladies Hall. He expects them back any time, scared to death. After all the trouble, hard work, ana worry, the twins finally found a chance to present the happenings of the future: Kappa Psi over South North. East Eagles over Alpha Pi Kappa Psi o\?er I. T. K. North North over South North There they are, kind readers, and the gazers hope you will put your faith in their predictions. They promise you that they were not scared into these predictions by any one, ghosts or witches, but look them straight from the stars. Bosco and Rosco leave you now with this thought, “If you hitch your wagon to a star you don’t have to ride on rubber.” Alpha Pi Wins Over South North An underdog South North team threw a terrible scare into the cham pionship hopes of a favored Alpha Pi team. South North played the Alpha Pi boys almost to a complete stand still as the latter tallied on two passes to win by a 12-0 margin. The South Northers, led by line smashing Ha- good, constantly pusried the frater nity boys back for losses but in the end the Alpha Pi hoys were on the long end of the score. South North, who had a great defense, but couldn’t click on the offense, played a good brand of ball all the way. In the first quarter, there was equality in the playing as one team pushed the other back and forth. This continued to be until Zodda threw a beautiful long pass to Rouih who dodged several opponents to run into the end zone for first blood. The try for point failed. Again a quarter began with the two teams fighting on even terms until a pass from Zodda to Malone set up a touchdown. But the South Northers, playing brilliant defensive ball, held for four downs in the shadow of the goal posts and. then took over and kicked back up the field. Alpha Pi came marching back to tally on a spot pass from Tony Festa to Zodda. The conversion was again no good. The third period opened with Al pha Pi showing its power to march down the field only to have South North take over. There was no se rious goal-line stand, however, dur ing the whole quarter. Alha Pi developed a case of fum- bleitis in the fourth to give the North boys a good chance to score, which South North tailed to make good. Leaders for Alpha Pi were Routh in the line and Zodda in the back- field. Hagood and Gray on the for ward wall and Walker in the back- field stai'red for South North. This win kept Alpha Pi's slate clean and kept them tied with East F.agles for possession of the lead in the league. Scoop Charlie Mann, in addition to being Sports Editor of the paper, is also a talented football player, or maybe we should say, he was a ta lented player. Last week when the Kappa Psi team, on which Charlie played end, met the East Eagles on the local grid iron, your Sports Editor sustained a racturc in his left wing. Fortunately the injury was not too serious. However, it was a terrible blow to the Kappa Psi team which had counted heavily on the services of Mann in its football compaign. However, the try for point failed, so the fraternity still held a small one-point lead. During the third period, it looked as if Kappa Psi would protect her small lead by holding the Eagles around the middle of the field. But in the fourth period, the Eagles, led by lineman Brown, and backs Zeiss ner, Perry and Coplin, came marching back with a touchdown pass from Zeissner to Perry, the latter running twenty yards to score. This pass, which was almost intercepted by John Pollard, was good to make a 12-7 lead which looked very permanent. The Eagles began to march then but time and again Kappa Psi proved their de-. fensive ability by hurling their foes back. Leading stars for Kappa Psi in the line were Darden and Watts and in the backfield, Nance and Hooper. Although the game was a moral victory for Kappa Psi due to other teams poor showing in playing the Eagles, Kappa Psi lost one of its top linemen in Charlie Mann, who broke his arm in the second quarter. This will hurt their winning chances in games to come. The victory for the Eagles gave them a tie for the lead of the league wiith Alpha Pi.
