SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 1944 MAROON.AND GOLD PAGE THREE WHAT'S WHAT BY WHATLEY In the spring when a young man’s fancy lightly turns to what girls think of all winter, some of the more athletically inclined of Elon students begin to think in terms of nets, rackets, tennis balls and base lines Some of the girls noticed on the courts beside Ladies Hall are Grace Towery, Joyce Matthews, Mary 'Varborough and Joyce Smitli. These girls appear to be having lots of fun spanking the rubber with the catgut. The boys in the Publishing House have been playing for a couple of weeks on the court lent to the students by Mr. Johnston. Clarence Biddix, with his cannonball serve, has easily been the outstanding player on the court, while Tom Horner, Jetton Cheery, Bob Graham, and Wallace Chandler have been providing able opposi tion. Rumor has it that there may Ise another Elon Novelty team formed. Some of the same boys who or ganized the Novelty basketball team have been dis cussing a softball team. As yet no definite plans have been made as all ideas are still in the discussion stage. If it is possible for these boys to do so, this corner thinks that they should continue their plans because it would not only provide exercise for them but .also recre ation for the entire student body. Onei of the more popular sports on the campus seems to be sunbathing. Almost every Sunday after noon a group of boys may be seen resting in the arms of Morpheus with nothing covering their manly bodies other than a pair of gym shorts. Some disastrous re sults were noticed the first night after the sun bathing started, especially when some uninformed person slap ped a participant on the back. The drug store noticed a great increase in the sale of Hinds Honey and Almond Cream. Now with only a month of school left we begin to think about next year. The boys who are fortunate enough to be here next year will have something to look forward to with inter-collegiate athletics returning to Elon College. It is true that athletics will be on a much smaller scale and possibly basketball will be the only sport played, but it will still provide the boys with an outlet for >heir enthusiasm arid will serve to help arouse that dormant Elon spirit. Nomination for the best athlete among the Air Corps* students: A-S Post, who seems to be outstanding at any sport. He is a good basketball player, he’s good at volley ball, and then the other day we noticed him playing tennis. Also, he displays such good sportsman ship that he must be a near relative of his namesake, Emily Post. HEY The Gang's All Here * * * HOWARD CATES GIVES GRADUATION RECITAL J. Howard Cates appeared in a graduation recital in voice Monday evening at Elon College. It was a re cital which betrayed an unusual mu sicianship, good command of the voice, and was a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. Mr. Cates’ diction was carefully handled, his sense of intonation im peccable, and his style showed ma turity seldom found on a student re cital. He reached the acme of his dramatic ability in “Vision Fugitive from Herodiade” by Massenet in which the upper register of the sing er’s voice was particularly satisfying —resonant and full at all times. Other numbers on the program were “Vittoria Mi Core” (Carissimi), “Ombra Mai fu” (Handel), “La Belle Table est mise,” “Plaisir d’Amour” (Martini), “Apres un Reve” (Faure), three songs by Schubert, “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind” (Arne) “The Pret- ,y Creature” (Wilson), “Trade Winds” (Keel) and “Mother Cary” (Keel). En cores were “Water Boy” and “Short- iin’ Bread.” Mr. Cates was ably accompanied by Lila Le Van, instructor in piano at Elon College, who played with great discretion and musical understanding.
