SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 11. 1944 MAROON AND GOLD KliSlil/IS OF FALL INTRAMURAL What's What By EMEliSOy whati.ey Your Roving Repoiter ■im*nation Regular basketball practice got underway this week with about 30 boys out for the first clay’s drill The boys out were mostly fresh men, with a few upperclassmen scattered about. Although most of the time the first clay was taken up with fundamentals ot basket ball, some of the boys had an op portunity to show Coach Adcox that they knew how to ha-idle the sphere. The practice sessions to date have been mostly passing and limberiuy bp diilh. although one five minute scrimr .^e v.as held. Five boys show ing up about eciually well so far are Fred Register and Wayne Taylor, both right handers; Fred Chandler and Bob McCotter, both left handers; and Dan ny Banks, who seems to use either hand equally well. Others showing signs of true basketball ability are Bill MacIntyre. Ronald Grinstead, Bobby Foust, Wallace Owen. Fred Yarborough, Bob Graham, and Wil lard Marlette. With a stiff schedule of the best teams in the conference ahead of them, the boys have really got to get on the ball before the snow flies. ♦ The boy’s intramural touch football season ended this week with the freshmen and the upper classmen in a tie lor the top spot. It is rumored that a gala event is planned for the play off with either a game on Thanksgiving afternoon, or else a night game if it can be arranged. Coach Adcox is really to be'con gratulated for the fine job he has done in the intramural setup this year. He has sacrificed a lot of time and hard work in order to make the program the success that it has been By LEON GIBBS With the capable aid of Ruth Ev- erette, Shirley Sinclair, and Vera ' the’«e theme soncs were col lected for the girls of East. IPPERCLASSMEN DEFEAT FRESHMEN WELCOME ELON STUDENTS! DITV DRUG GO. Burlington, N. C. mm With The Armed Forces The upperclassmen touch football team defeated the freshman team Monday, November 5. by the score of 9 to 6 The game was the Inst of the season and proved to be a thrll'er from beginning to end. The upper classmen, by winning the game, gained a tie for first place, and a playoff game will be necessary. As yet no plans hav? been made but it is hoped that the game will be played either at night or on Thanksgiving afternoon. In the victory, the upperclass line w^s the standout on the field Led by Don Miller and Bob Graham, who refused to be blocked out. the line was rushing the passer on every play and many of the passes fell short be cause of the continued harassing by Leon Gibbs. Wayne Taylor, and Em erson Whatley completed the line , that averaged better than 190 pounds ' per man. Fred Yarborough and Rod- I ney Southerland stood out in the ! backfield and Fred Register was sud- I den death on any passes that came j near him at right end Willard-Mar lette did a neat job at center for the older team. The freshman team was outclassed ^^d its only score came on a fluke play. Bill MacIntyre and Bob Me cotter were standouts on both de fense and offense for the freshmen and Fred Chandler’s fme passes went for naught when they were either caught in the high wind that tltfy nil afternoon, or else were batted down by the upperclassmen’s sec ondary.
