tire the side. But the Bulldogs tied
the count in the eighth. Andrews hit
Davis with a pitched ball and the
slugging leftfielder went to second on
Aycock’s sacrifice and scored as Bain
connected for his third hit, a long
triple down the rightfield line.
But the Fighting Christians boun-
eci right back with a tally in the bot
tom of the eighth to sew up the con
test. Anderson walked and was push
ed on to second by Mcwain and went
to third as Hank DeSimone reached
safely on Barefoot’s error. Here Elon
strategy worked beautifully as Coach
Jim Mallory ordered the squeeze, and
Andrews sent a trickier to the mound.
Anderson strolled across the plate
with the winning marker as the slow
roller scooted over Thorne's glove.
Ed Ellis was easily the batting star
of the day. He collected two singles
besides the long homer and drove in
two of the four runs while pilfering
two bases. Billy Matze also chipped
in with a double and single. Center-
fielder Bain led the Bulldogs at bat
with a triple and two singles.

tist for the night and turned in a
creditable performance, allowing five
hits and a couple of runs while re
ceiving credit for the victory.
The Bears reached Andrews for
the tying run in the eighth on a pair
of hits and an infield out.
Then came the big tenth as our
Fighting Christians exploded for four
runs on six hits. DeSimone collected
his third hit and Andrews moved him
along with another bingle. Then
Sileo, batting for Matze, loaded the
sacks with a sacrifice hit, and Dick
York scored DeSimone and Andrews
with a long double. Ed Ellis flied
deep to center scoring Sileo, and York
came in with the final run of the in
ning on Walker’s fourth hit of the
game, a long double to right center-
field.
Walker, the brilliant shortstop and
captain of the Fighting Christians,
led his mates at bat with a triple,
double, two singles, and two base on
balls in six trips to the plate. De
Simone had three hits and the same
number of rbi’s also aided heavily in
the 16 hit attack on two Lenoir
Rhyne Chuckers.

Tennis Team
Finishes Second
For the second straight year, the
Elon netters finished in second place
behind the repeating North State
champions. High Point. The local rac
quet swingers completed their season
with a record of eight wins and three
losses.
Only one conference loss was suf
fered, and that at the hands of the
Panthers. The return match with the
j High Pointers was rained out twice
j and finally cancelled. A victory ir"
the return match would have placed
! the Christians in a tie for the con
ference championship.
The team, composed of Winstead,
Godfrey, Wooldridge, Spirko, Godwin,
an Paige, gathered a total of 48
points against 29 points for their op
ponents (disregarding victims via for
feiture route). On the six varsity
players, all will return next year,
with the exception of Paige and
Wooldridge (who are hoping to grad
uate).
Infielders Are Fast Foursome
Shown above is the smooth quartet which makes up our Fighting Chris
tian infield. L to r Thurso McSwain, first base; Billy Matze, second base;
Captain Steve Walker, short stop; and Ed Ellis, third base. Walker is
among the team’s leading hitters with a -350 plus batting average.
