MAROON AND GOLD SPORTS Christians Prepare For Saturday Battle With A. C. C I'm teHing you BY ROCKY SILEO TOWN SUPPORT FROM “B” The Burlington Junior Cliamber of Commerce has taken overr the advanced sale of tickets for all five Elon home games, and this fine ges ture indicates a large turnout from B town and neighboring localities. There will be many new faces in this throng, so a good showing both on the field by the team and in the stands by the student body will help to sell these outsiders on lege sports activities. REPORTS FROM ABROAD Charley Donato, captain and all conference tackle on Elon’s qreat ‘41 championship club, has been appointed head coach of football at Leavenworth high school of Water- bury, Conn. The former Army ath letic instructor also directs a strong semi-pro team, and is a successful restaurateur as well. Another star on that mighty Elon ‘11’, all -confer ence fullback Joe Tomancheck is aiding Coach Mallory on the grid iron as backfield coach and scout while finishing his schooling. Elon’s former line Coach Garland Causey is now head coach at Golds boro high school ....reports indicate that early Injuries to key players have the popular mentor worrying. J.W.Knight is on the coaching staff at Reidsville high school while Claude Comer has moved into the Burlington iRecreBtion Depaiitment office as assistant to Roney Cates... Cates, most students will remem ber, is the elongated shot wizard who electrified local basketball fans two seasons ago with 400-odd points to rank among the first ten scorers in the nation. FRESHMAN TALENT Since becoming head coach here last spring, Coach Mallory has hunted high and low for superior football ivory. But his efforts have not gone unrewarded, foor we now have in our midst a number of sparking freshmen who are eager too supplant various varsity stal warts. Among the more prominen' are linemen: Len Greenwoo^d, Sal Gero, A1 Pate, Bob DeMarco and Dick Buchanan; and backfield men Jack Spivey, and Frank Tingley. All men interested in participat ing in the intramural sports pro gram are expected to notify the '-tative of their in almost the same situation—that is, both were well pasted in their respective sea^n openers last week. The Bulldogs lost their conference opener to the Catawba Indians, de fending conference champs, by a score of 42-7, while Elon was drop ping its inaugural to Davidson, 25-0. The Davidson tussle is a thing of the past, and after this brief recap, we should forget it. The bigger and more powerful Wildcats proved that we had no pass defense to speak of. Our blocking was worse than poor, while that big defensive line, in which Co-Cap^ Manzi is the smallest character, Wi much too slow for the wide sweej around end. In fact, our forward wall was ouc- charged and out-played throughout the game, a very disheartening fact when you remember that the defen sive play of the line has been the key feature of the team for the past two years. These mistakes were very obvious and to be expcted. However, there were a few bright spots in that dismal night. Fred Claytor looked so good in the few times he lugged the ball that Coach Mallory has de cided to give him a crack at the fullback slot, the position he may run from tomorrow. If so, he will be alternating with Pete Marshburn. Jack Spivey and Bill Barger, a couple of lightning-like freshmen tailbacks, will go with proper block ing. Joe Erickson could provide that, but the Wake Forest transferee is ineligible for conference compe tition. Two more freshmen. Roily Ellis and Dick Buchanan, stood out on the line. In fact, Buchanan has showed up so well at the center slot, both on defense and offense, that Coach Mallory has decided to give Paul Causey, varsity center for the past two years, a crack at the pesky probably alternate with Fred Clay- blocking back post. Hank DeSi- PETE MARSHBURN, 170 pounds respective Qf power and football might, will tor at the fullback slot against At lantic Christian tomorrow night. Pete, lighter than the average full back, is a great defensive perform er. His defensive play was one of the bright spots in the Davidson game. mone, who has been working at that position thus far in this campaign, has gone back to his old guard post. Outcome? The Fighting Christi ans took the measure of the Bull dogs by a 13-7 count last year, so we of the sports departmnt will string along with dear ol’ Elon by two touchdowns. GUSTY center stalwart for the past two years, has beea working out at the blocking back position in practice sessions all week, and may be seen running from that position tomorrow night against Atlantic Christian. Paul’s specialty is backing up the line of defense, a function at which he ranks among the best in the con ference.
