I'm Telling You
While the varsity cagers failed
to qualify for a North State tour
nament berth, Elon College was
well represented at various tour
naments in the surrounding areas.
Pete Marshburn, Len Fesmire,. C.
K. Siler and Jack Spivey were the
big guys in Coca-Cola’s city cham
pionship surge in Greensboro last
week. The victors received a
beautiful trophy, which went to
Fesmire with the flip of a coin.
Then Spivey went home one
night last week to help Sanford
beat C. K. Siler and his Siler City
quintet 28-26 in a much disputed
affair. Seems that final tabula
tions had the two clubs tied at
26-26, but the officials, basing
their opinion on the running score
gave the game to Sanford . . .
Other tournament performers are
J. P. Thompson and varsity cag
ers Larry Gaither and Don
Haithcox, who are playing with
the Silco quintet in the Siler City
tournament.

Speaking of tournaments, the
Alamance County high school
play-offs were, from all appear
ance, a great success. The capa
city crowds brought one visions
of still greater crowds come an
other basketball season and a new
Elon College gymnasium. The
tournament itself was climaxed in
typical dramatic fashion. So ev
enly matched did the teams ap
pear to be, and so close was the
play, that both girls’ and boys’
championship games were extend
ed to overtime periods.

as Vance Reece, a la Johnny Lu-
jack, put on a fine passing exhibi
tion, and Jerry Allen, a rookie
from South Norfolk, Va., bulled
his way through the big Red line
time after time.
As the Blues continued their
fine play, the scrimmage be
came rougher and tension rose un
til, ^ finally, individuals began
squaring off. But the boys soon
kissed and made up, and now all
is forgotten . . . We are under
the impression that the team as
a whole was tense and tired from
winter drills as well as the long
workout Saturday afternoon.

Whoever said featherweight
battles don’t pay off might be in
terested to know that Willie Pep
took home $20,405 for 15 rounds
of great boxing against Saddler.
The total, which represents 30 per

pense for the 11 stitches he need
ed to cover the cuts he received
over Both eyes in the brawl.

Billy Beard, a standout eager
for the Jayvees early in the sea

ree to the Norfolk Division of
William & Mary, is going great
guns with that school’s quintet.
Beard, who featured in three re
cent games with 20, 16, and 17
points respectively, plans to enter
either William & Mary or V.P.I.
after completing studies at the
extension school.

Recently he went around the

N. E. Baker, a pro at the Club,
this was one of lowest scores

was Dave’s first time out this year
around the Alamance course, and
he didn’t know the course too
well.

When Martha Anne Beers hit
the rim for 40 points the night
that her Day Student Intramural
team played the Delta Upsilon
Kappa Sorority in a benefit, game
for the March of Dimes, it was
nothing unusual for the fans.who
had seen her play in high school.
Martha played 3 years of 'basket
ball for the Elon High School and
averaged from 30 to 40 points leach
game.
When the Elon sextet met the
Sylvan girls during her senior
year, Martha not only broke the
scoring record of her high school,
but of Alamance County by rack
ing up 39 points. This game was
really a victory for the Elon girls,
not dnly because of the record
that Martha set, but because it
was the first time in five years
that Elon had defeated Sylvan.
Martha, a member of the clas^
of ’48 at Elon College High
School, was awarded a, gold trophy
the night of graduation for her
fine basketball performance and
for the county record she set.
Captain of the Day Student
team, Martha is keeping up her
scoring record. Her team has
gone undefeated so far in the In
tramural tournament. When ask
ed about tickling the net 20 times
in one game, Martha’s only com
ment was, “Shucks, I haven’t
heard that net laugh yet.” The
pretty 5-10 blonde is a freshman.
She blushes easily when teased
about her scoring record. If there
ever was a modest ball player, it
is Martha.
Dick Carlish, British sportsman
and promoter here in the United
States to study the field of avail
able talent he would like to land,
eyed those players now serving
five-year suspension and planned
to contact Commissioner A. B.
Chandler for approval.
According to Carlish, an eight-
team league is planned, and the
suspended big-league stars could
be a great help in getting baseball
underway in England. Too, by
using only these suspended play
ers, the British would not be tam
pering with the baseball setup in
the U. S.
British sportsmen backing the
proposal feel certain that baseball
will go over big in England. Many
were compeltely sold on America’s
national pastime when a crack GI
team faced a Marine nine at Wem-
bly Stadium during the war and
attracted almost 40,000 specta
tors.
Yes, these British dreamers are
looking forward to the day when
baseball will “kill cricket” in Eng
land.
Dave Mondy, who tallied 14
points, once again paced the South
Engineers and was high man for
the tilt. South played the final
tilt without the services of their
star play-maker, former varsity
star Johnny Clayton.
East took the first game of the
series 39-33, then South came
back the next night to even mat
ters with a 48-35 victory, necessi
tating the play-off match.
By virtue of their winning the
basketball laurels. East Dormi
tory is now ahead in total points
toward the' Intramural trophy
that is awarded at the conclusion
of each year. The basketball and
volleyball champs have 20 points,
while South, in the runner-up
spot, has 15.
For box score, see column 6 on
this pge.
You never see Martha around
witfi the boys too much, although
she seems to have some secrets.
Her favorite pastime has been
watching the Elon Varsity basket
ball team, and now it will be
watching the baseball team. Re
portedly there is a fellow down
at the high schol who is a faith
ful adrimer of Martha's. He nev
er misses a ball game when Mar
tha is playing.
Martha will complete her one
year commercial course in May,
and from Elon she will go to
Winston-Salem to work for Hanes
Hosiery. Next fall, the high
school “star” will play basketball
for the Hanes Hosiery team
Hanes has been after Martha to
come to Winston-Salem since she
graduated from high school. Ap
parently they recognize a good
player when they see one.

However, the best percentage

Invited to Guilford College to
participate in a “Sports Day” pro
gram along with competition from
Lenoir Rhyne, Pfeiffer, Guilford,
and Greensboro College, the Elon
Girls’ all-star intramural basket
ball team walked off with the
day’s honors.
Coached by Miss Hope Pate,
Elon played four eight-minute
games and came out undefeated.
It was a round-robin tournament,
with each team playing the other
four teams.
Team scores were figured on
the following basis: winning a
game, 2 points; tieing a game, 1
point; and losing a game, 0 points.
Highest possible score for a team
was 8 points and that is what the
Elon girls had.
Next highest score was Lenoir
Rhyne with 5 points. Pfeiffer and
Guilford followed, with Greens
boro College on the bottom.
For the Eto’s team, Evelyn Mc
Neill and Martha Beers tied for
high scoring honors with 10 points
each, while Millie Johnson and
Betty Cobb tied for second place
with 6 points each. Jean “Hook”
Harris showed some fine floor
play, though she didn't rack up
the points.
Eldh’s guards were Jean Thomp
son, Marjorie Brinkley, Lou Tuck
and Betty Truitt. These girls did
a good job, as was indicated by
their opponents’ low scores.
Out of the four games played,
only one foul was called against
Elon.
Scores Of Elon’s Games
Elon 4; Guilford 2.
Elon 7, Pfeiffer 1.
Elon 7; Lenoir Rhyne 4.
Elon 14; Greensboro 4
Totals: Elon 32; opponents 11.
