/ 1 Wednesday, May 16, 1951 MAROON AND GOLD PAGE THREE Eton Baseball Squad Wins North State Honors Christians Take Title Spying On Sports by JOE SPIVEY ISORTH STATE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS OF 1951 Your “Or Spy” watched Dave aiondy win the North State Con ference golf crown for the second ,:rae. In doing so, Dave had to ■;eat last year’s champion. Bill .■Halls of East Carolina, and that :, quite a feat. Stalls took a nine n one hole and a seven on an other in the second day’s round to watch his hopes fade into the rough. This does not exclude the fact that Dave played some of the best golf of his career, and when asked for a comment, he merely grinned. Congratulations, Dave! ♦ ♦ » Not to be left out of the picture Bill Hyler, who played beauti ful golf, but couldn’t put his shots 1 jgether when they counted most. lili, a 76-77 for a 153 total is 1 :etty tolerable golf. Who am I l.ying to kid? It was wonderful! * ♦ » The Christians on the diamond^ timed in nothing less than sen sational ball in that stretch drive to clinch their third straight Conference title, and then came that Conference track meet at Guilford with Len Greenwood end his cohorts chalking up a rifty victory. Three Conference c^lampionships within four days is r,,)t bad, and I do mean NOT BAD! So. it’s orchids to you guys. ♦ ♦ * Question and Answer Box; ‘ Why can’t the students use the ly tennis colirts over by tlie gym?” Answer; “Work is still under- ' ly to finish putting the top cov ering on the clay courts. If it undergoes any damage during this period, all the work will have been in vain.” Question; “Why doesn’t the school build a track in back of the gym?” Answer; “The process of level ing off this area has never been "'Tnpleted. If a track is built there now, it will only be torn up when the needed work is done.” * * • The questions from above were asked by various interested students, and the answers were supplied by Athletic Director J. L. Pierce. , * » ♦ Guilford College had an unex pected “Spring Cleaning” in the coaching department. They are losing Eddie Teague and Paul Lentz to the Marines. You see, Fellers? They’re get ting everybody! ♦ * ♦ Up at the Catawba game things were going pretty sour for the Christians. It was the top of the ninth, and Catawba was leading 11-6. One man was out and no body on base. Here the scene ::hanged. Shag Meyers uncrossed two bats lying on the ground. Coach Jim Mallory pulled off his bow-tie (I didn’t know he owned a tie) and ■^hen came the fireworks! “Ouah Boys” went on to score eight huge run.s and cop the ‘win. Nobody superstitutious on that team! (Continued on Page Four) MINOR SPORTS GOLF SCHEDULE Elon 6, N. C. State 12. Elon 1, Ohio U. 26. Elon 5 1-2, N. C. State 21 1-2. Elon 14, Catawba 13. Friday afternoon. The Christians were hotter than the proverbial fire-cracker as they passed out a full dose of whitewash to the rival Bears and Indians. Austin Brewer limited Lenoir-Rhyne to two hits in win ning 10 to 0 on Thursday, and Lefty Taylor allowed Catawba four hits in copping a 2 to 0 thriller the next day. Mondy, who is pictured at the right with his trophy and winning smile, was ably aided in the Elon cause by Bill Hyler, another Nor folk product, who tied with Stalls for second place at 153 strokes.
