In the Western Division, it looks like Lenoir Rhyne or Cataw ba; (here in the Eastern Division, East Carolina and Elon appear to be Ithe logical contenders. In fact. East Carolina has already been dubbed by some sports scribes as “the team to be eat." We 11 string along with our own scribes as “the team to beat.” * ♦ ♦ ^ That encounter with A.C.C. that Tasted through twelve innings was a hot one. In fact, the stan’fls caught on fire in the late frames. Must have been that rally put on by the Christians. * ♦ ♦ The annual North State Golf Toultnament will be held on May Sthjand 6th at the beautiful Star- mount Country Club Course in Greensboro, and it looks like an other year for an Elon champion ship. Ladeli Ford, another Elon student, is pitching for the Patri- jts. * * » Did You Know—That Mr. Byrd, our Maroon and Gold faculty ad visor, used to be a track man for the University of North Carolina? He also coached high school bas ketball and was a rival of Profes sor Colley, who mentored high school cage teams for years. That Mr. Colley once coached our own basketball coach, Doc Mathis? That Professor West was a can didate for the cross-country team at North Carolina and played foot ball for Mars Hill Junior College? That Professor Barney played football for Elon, and his mother made his uniform? That Dr. Smith, our president, also played football for Elon dur ing his student days? That Peahead W'alker was once he head football coach here at Elon? That Horace Hendrickson, head football coach at State, was once head football coach at Elon? * * * I don’t know how they vote for the Messick Sportsmanship trophy at other schools, but if it s done there like it is here at Elon, the whole thing’s a big farce. This is not intended to be a criticism of our student government or any individuals; rather, it is a sug gestion which I believe to be woilih consideringj The voting -hould NOT be done by the stu dents or any representative at a meeting- The men who partici pate in the athletic contests are the ones to decide who should re tain the trophy. 8he reason is simple. How many students at tend every athletic event during the year at every North State in stitution? The percentage would be pretty close to zero; but the teams make the rounds, and they are the ones who could tell wheth er the sportsmanship was good on the part of other teams and the student bodies. Let them de- cicte in the future. * * * And whether we win or lose let’s be good sports!
