Friday, M»jr 4, 1962 MAROON GOLD PAOB nmn Miller Breaks Magic Ten’ For Two-Mile In Track Meet BasehaRers Split With Catamounts The Elon Christians and the Western Carolina Catamounts hroke even in a pair of baseball games at CuUowhee on Friday and Saturday, April 13th and 14th with the Christians winning eas ily on Friday by a 5 to 1 count and the Catamounts grabbing a 5 to 4 decision in a hard-fought tilt on Saturday. Jerry Tillman, Elon’s lanky All- Conference mound artist, went the route in the Friday battle and pitched steady ball to give Elon Its second Carolinas Conference victory of the year. The lone Catamount score against Tillman came' in the first inning, when the first batter walk ed and scored on a double and a sacrifice fly. After that lone counter. Tillman worked a steady game the rest of the way. The Catamounts came back and evened the weekend games when tliey gained the 5-4 decision Satur day. They got to Elon’s Wayne Al len for two runs in the first on a double and two singles and added three more counters in a fourth- inning uprising, which moved Western Carolina to a 5-0 lead at that point. The Christians are still facing he crucial part of the season, and Coach Jack Sanford’s boys could alter their position quite material ly if they can get their pitchers n Une and begin hitting behind heir runners, two faults that have loomed large in the early-season results. Of course, it must be admitted that the play of our Christians has been somewhat disappointing as a hole, for (he pre-season indica- ions pointed to a strong outfit that 'ould be a threat tor the loop title ut we are not ready yet to give p on the boys. Some of the most dangerous falt ers on the Elon squad, who loom 'd among the dangerous stickers n the Conference, have had trou ble in getting their hits to fall. inability to score in the field events cut the Christian scoring threat as the Elon squad placed sixth in team scoring in the fast field. Oontlnued on Page Foui Elon Wins Over Quakers With Ninth-Inning Rally Striking with the power of an atomic bomb, the Elon Christians blasted the Guilford Quakers for ix runs in the top of the ninth to win a Carolinas Conference dia mond battle at Guilford on Thurs- jay afternoon. April 26th. The Christians entered the final nning with an 8-3 deficit staring hem in the face, but they took ad- . antage of tour bases on balls is sued by Guilford's Bob Linville and Jim Childress and stacked hree singles with the four walks to plate six runs in the winning tally. Three walks in succession load ed the sacks, and Jim Leviner un loaded a two-run single. Eddie Clark then walked to load the ;a.'^’s again, and Mike Little sin gled to plate two other counters. A third single by Phil Cheek push ed the two final runs home. Wayne Allen, fourth Elon pitcher of the day, then struck out three Quak ers in succession to close out the game. Danny Hall was the top hitter for the Christians in the battle with a pair of singles and a pair of walks during the game. The Christians broke away in front with a single run in the first inning when Steve Wall walked, stole second and raced home on Jim Leviner’s single, but the Elon outfit could never get any effect ive rally underway after that op ening rack. I The Panthers pushed over two runs in the third and added anoth er brace of markers in the fourth as Ray Grant drove in three of the High Point scores with a sin gle in each inning. Grant was the top Panther hitter, and Leviner topped Elon with two singles in four trips. The score by innings: Little Danny Hall, a Slugging sophomore outfielder from Leaks- ville, is pacing the homerun hitters for the Fighting Christian base ball squad The Tri-City lad, who hits with a power that belies his scant poundage, has hit five homers thus far for the season, four of them coming within a space of three consecutive games.
