Things Seen As Fighting Christians Defeated Catawba Indians
Action seen as the Fighting Christians defeated the Catawba Indians 39 to 36 in the annual Homecoming Day
battle in Burlington Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 22nd, is shown at the left and above. Pictured left is
Elon’s senior end, Pete Jarvis, being tackled after catching one of seven passes during the game, which enabled the
Burlington boy to break Rex Harrison’s old season pass reception record during the game. Pictured above is Burgin
Beale (in dark jersey Number 14) dashing for Elon’s first touchdown that started the Christians on the road to
victory over the Indians. Beale also passed for another pair of TD’s during the game to thrill the Elon Homecoming
crowd of 3,200 cheering fans.
Elon Gridders Top Catawba In 39-36 Tilt
Newberry Here Tomorrow
Beale Passing Proves Big Feature
In Annual Homecoming Day Battle
The aerial bombs could fell the story
again this weekend when the Fighting
Christian gridders tangle with the
Newberry Indians in Burlington Sta
dium in a battle which is set for 2:30
o’clock Saturday afternoon and which
will be the climactic feature of the
annual “Parents Day” observance on
the Elon College campus.
The Newberry eleven, which broke
even in its first six games this fall,
turning in victories over Appalachian,
Catawba and Frederick while losing
tilts to Lenoir Rhyne, Wofford and
Furman, will brmg a veteran combi-
season by a 39 to 26 score over
Catawba before an Elon Homecoming
Day crowd on Saturday afternoon,
October 22nd, and the Elon gridders
as a unit topped the 400-yard mark in
total offense for the first time in
three years.
Two Elon ends surpassed the all-
time Elon season record for pass re
ceptions during the game, the invading
Indians posted the highest total passing
yardage in history against an Elon
football team, and the Christians and
Indians combined passed for the high
est total aerial yardage in the history
of Elon football.
Both Pete Jarvis and Richard Mc-
George, who start on the flanks for
the Fighting Christians, moved past
the all-time Elon record of 31 catches
in a single season as they paced the
great aerial attack against Catawba.
Pete Jarvis, big senior from Burling
ton, grabbed seven passes and reached
34 total for the season; while Mc-

row, guided by senior quarterback
Benji Kirkland, who can throw with
the best of them in college football.
The Fighting Christian squad, which
thrilled a Homecoming Day crowd by
beating Catawba 39 to 26, will be
returning to the home field for this
Newberry battle after invading the
Carolina hill country last weekend to
engage the Western Carolina Cata
mounts, and Coach Gary Mattocks
and his boys will be going all out to
make “Parents Day” just as successful
as was Homecoming Day two weeks
ago.
Harrison during the 1964 campaign.
The Catawba eleven, featuring John
Scott as its top pitcher, completed 27
of 43 passes during the game for a
total of 497 yards, which surpassed the
all-time opponent’s record against an
Elon team for both passes completed
and passing yardage. The old records
were held by East Carolina, with 24
passes completed for 324 yards in the
1950 battle between the Christians
and Pirates.
The Homecoming Day battle be
tween Elon and Catawba also showed
the highest total yards in passing for
both teams combined and perhaps the
highest combined passing yardage in
Carolinas Conference history, for
Catawba had 397 yards and Elon had
253 yards for a combined total of 650
yards through the air. This was well
ahead of the combined total of 623
yards gained through the air by Elon
and East Carolina in their 1951
contest.
The Fighting Christian gridders un
leashed all the pent-up fury of the
entire season as they struck for six
touchdowns and more than four hun
dred yards in total offense to trounce
the Catawba Indians 39 to 36 before
3,200 elated and thrilled Elon Home
coming Day fans on Saturday, October
22nd.
The slightly-favored Catawba grid
ders hit pay-dirt first, scoring in the
first period on a 22-yard toss from
John Scott to Drew Buie for a 6-0
lead, but that only seemed to fire the
Christian gridders, who struck back
with four TD’s in a big second quarter.
Burgin Beale, big Christian quarter
back, raced five yards to top an 81-
yard drive, and Lloyd Kanipe kicked
an Elon 7-6 margin. But that only
started the Elon outbreak, for Beale
tossed to Pete Jarvis for nine yards and
the second TD, Dave Oliphant stole
the ball from an Indian runner and
dashed 30 yards over the goal, and
Beale tossed 25 yards to Jarvis for the
I fourth score of the big second quarter,
which ended with Elon leading 27 to
6 at half-time.
Anyone who figured that Elon
would rest on her laurels at that point
was fooled, for the second half was
hardly started before Perry Williams
broke away on a 43-yard dash over
tackle to run the score to 33 to 6.
Catawba rebounded on a 25-yard pass
from Jim Moose to Larry Taylor that
cut the margin to 33-14, but Elon
countered with a 64-yard drive that
ended
with Williams bucking
over
from the one for a 39-14 lead.

BREWER STARRED ON DEFENSE
Gene Brewer, a senior end from Mount Olive, who packs p.enty of

for the Christian grid squad as Elon turned back the Catawba Indians by a
39-36 count in the annual Homecoming Day football game on October 22nd.
