Elon Tops Catawba In Brilliant Cage Tilt
Hot Shooting, Fine Rebounding And
Great Defense Feature 73-60 Win
EAGLE-EYED ELON FRESHMAN
Tom McGee, an eagle-eyed freshman guard from Deer Park, N. Y., has
proved to be one of the most potent scoring threats on the Elon cage squad
this season. The first year sharpshooter has several times been in the 20’s in
the scoring column and has paced the Christian attack in a number of games.
McGee has also been an excellent floor player and defensive man.

Elon Quintet
Drops Game
To Bulldogs
After holding as much as a 14-point
lead during the first half, the Elon
Christians fell victim to a rugged
pressing defense by the Atlantic Chris
tian Bulldogs and allowed the Bulldog
quint to forge ahead in the final half
and grab an 86 to 72 victory in a
Carolinas Conference battle at Wilson
on Thursday night, January 12th.
The Elon cagers moved out to a
commanding lead in the first half, but
the Bulldogs used a pressing defense
to halt the Elon attack, and the home
team scored 12 straight points in one
stretch as they cut the Christian lead
to 37-34 at half-time. The Bulldogs
grabbed the lead for keeps at 42-41

The Fighting Christian cagers turn
ed in by far their finest game of the
season to date as they grabbed a deci
sive 73 to 60 victory over the Catawba
Indians on the floor of Alumni Mem
orial Gymnasium here on Saturday
night, January 14th, with the victory
coming as a fitting celebration of the
exact seventeenth anniversary of the
opening of Elon’s big sports arena
back in 1950.
Actually, the Elon triumph was ev
en more decisive than the final 73 to
60 score would indicate, for the Elon
cagers were out front by a whopping
26 points at 59 to 33 with barely six
minutes left on the clock, and Coach
Bill Miller’s boys were able to take
it easy and coast home with the vic
tory.
Captain Tommy Davis and lanky
Bill Bowes topped the sharp and fast-
moving Christian attack, with Davis
racking 21 points and Bowes getting
15 counters for the night, but they re
ceived able aid from Noble Marshall,
Henry Goedeck and Tom McGee, all
of whom scored in double figures.
This balanced Elon scoring was a
fine feature, but one of the most
spectacular and important factors in
the Elon win was the tremendous de
fensive job done by Elon’s Noble Mar
shall, fast-fingered freshman guard
from Roanoke, Va., who kept Cataw
ba’s sharpshooting Dwight Durante
off balance through most of the game
and effectively slowed Durante’s
shooting until the closing minutes.
Durante, who had been averaging
better than 32 points per game all sea
son, had hit 45 points when Elon eked
a 79 to 77 win over the Indians at the
Gate City classic, but Marshall held
Durante to only 9 points through the
first half of the game here and to
barely sixteen points through the first
34 minutes of play.
Also playing a great part in the
Elon victory was the finest rebound
play of the season, with Bill Bowes
grabbing down 18 and Henry Goedeck
pulling down 17 loose balls off the
boards. The Elon squad had a total
of 53 rebounds for the game, com
pared to 32 for the Indians.

six field goals in Elon’s tremendous 73 to 60 victory over the Catawba Indians on the Elon floor on Saturday night,
January 14th. Bill Bowes (44), who played one of his finest games of two seasons in an Elon uniform, is watching

Christian ^5’
Wins Battle
With Camels
Coach Bill Miller called it the
“best game of the season” when his
Fighting Christians turned back
Campbell 83 to 79 in a battle on the
Elon court on Monday night, January
9th, a game which featured four of the
five Elon starters in double figure
scoring.
The Elon quint broke away in front,
but the Campbell outfit moved ahead
late in the half to gain a 49 to 47
margin at the intermission, and Camp
bell continued to lead through the
early part of the second half. Bill
Bowes and Henry Goedeck hit buck
ets to tie the count and put Elon
ahead at 63 to 61 midway the second
half, and Elon held the lead the rest
of the way for the win.
