The Indian win, which came after two earlier losses to the Elon cagers this season, saw the Catawba cagers with some of the best tteam play of the year. Playing without Dwight Du rante, who had always taken more than half the Indian shots at the bas ket, the Indians got their whole team into the act in this Salisbury battle and put three starters in double digits. The game opened as a deliberate affair, with both Elon and Catawba playing for good shots, and the en tire first half was a nip-and-tuck bat tle in which the lead changed hands fourteen times before the homestand- ing Indians slipped ahead by a 31 to 29 margin at the half-time. Dave Snyder, Catawba’s big 6-8 junior center, turned in the best game of his career as he hit on ten of twenty floor shots and dropped seven of ten from the charity strip for a 27-point total. John Harwood chipped in with 20 points and Garland Davis t^ame on strong in the second half The Indians moved out quickly in to count 10 points for the night, the second half on six straight points and upped the margin to as much 3s 13 points with three minutes left in the game, but Elon’s Noble Mar shall sparked a closing drive that cut the lead sharply in the final mo- Bill Bowes, Elon’s sophomore for ward, played another in a series fine games that he has shown recently and led the Christians with 20 points. The Christians were assured by the past weekend of a spot among the eight teams in the toiu-nament, although they had little if any chance for a seeded spot among the top four teams. The players pictured above (left to right) are Jimmy Freisinger, Bob Williams, Tommy Davis, Steve Caddell, Henry Goedeck, Bill Bowes, Rick Hare, Mike Hailey, Danny Joe Pendry (who dropped from the roster before the season started) and Noble Marshall. Not present when the picture was made was Charlie Van Lear, who rejoined the Christian squad after the season had started. Elon Trounces Pfeiffer In 79-60 Tilt DRAKE PLANS BASEBALL DRILLS FOR ’67 SEASON but he stated that he had several fine candidates. He is awaiting de velopments in the condition of Bur- gin Beale and Larry Collins, two lettermen pitchers, whose status is uncertain. Beale is still hampered by a football injury from the Frederick game, and Collins ability depends on recovery from an operation last spring. A total of 58 players was expected to report to Coach Drake today in preparation for full scale workouts, among them being seven lettermen from last year’s squad that managed only seven wins in twenty-six bat tles during a disastrous campaign. Coach Jerry Drake, the new coach of the Elon College baseball squad this spring, has had his pitchers and catchers working out indoors since February 7th and expects his entire squad to report today for the begin ning of full scale drills. Questioned this week concerning his prospects. Coach Drake, who was himself one of Elon’s finest pitchers of recent seasons, stated that he has had a total of fifteen pitchers and six catchers taking part in the indoor workouts in Aliunni Memorial Gym nasium. Drake did not list all of his pros pects for mound and backstop duty, Elon Defeats Presbyterian The Elon Christians were using a hot hand in shooting in the first half as they moved to a commanding lead at intermission and then staved off a late Presbyterian rally to defeat the Blue Stockings 51 to 49 in a Carolinas Conference cage battle on the P.C. court on Wednesday night, February 1st. Henry Goedeck hit nine field buck ets for 18 points to lead the Christians, but Bill Bowes proved an outstanding performer for the Christians as he hit 15 points and pulled down 14 re bounds. The Elon Christians grabbed the lead early and moved to a command ing 20-point margin at the midway point in the first half as they raced to a comfortable 79 to 60 victory over the Pfeiffer Falcons on the Pfeiffer court on Monday night, February 6th. The victory, second of the season for Elon over the Falcons, almost duplicated Elon’s margin of 77 to 59 over the Falcons in the initial clash between the Carolinas Conference rivals on the Elon floor early in December. With this win the Elon cagers moved their Conference mark to an all-even 7-7 in wins and losses and tightened their hold on sixth place Noble Marshall, speedy freshman guard, and Henry Goedeck, rugged sophomore center, were the top guns in the Elon offensive which produced a 24-point halftime margin, for the Christians were ahead 45 to 21 at ihe break. They later ran this margin ;o 30 points, and Coach Bill Miller used his reserves during most of the final ten minuts. Four of the Elon starters were in double figures for the night, with Noble Marshall showing the way with 17 points on four field baskets and a perfect 9 for 9 at the free throw line. Henry Goedeck hit for 16 points, Tom McGee added 15 and Bill Bowes chipped in with 13 counters. Dwight Hinnant, who showed an eagle-eye accuracy for Pfeiffer, was top scorer for his team and for the game with 24 points, but he was the only player in the Falcon line-up who could reach double figures. Apps Defeat Gallant Elon Quint^ 75-70 The Elon Christians turned in a gallant effort for victory, but the Appalachian Mountaineers rallied be fore a rabid crowd of Mountaineer supporters to nip the Elon cagers by a 75 to 70 margin in a Carolinas Conference cage contest on the Boone floor on Wednesday night, February 8th. The Christians once more put four men in the double digit scoring column as they led the Mountaineers through the early stages of the game and then regained the front late in the second half and held the edge until less than three minutes remain ed in the action. With the Christians shooting well in the early minutes ,the apps had to battle tooth and toenail to knot on the clock in the first half, the count at 21-all with 9:15 left The tide of fortune switched after the half as Elon’s cagers took con trol of the rebounding off both boards, and this control enabled the Christians to pull within a single point at 62-61 when Tom McGee drove for a lay-up with seven minutes left. Two minutes later Noble Marshall came through with a three-point play to knot the score at 66-all, and mo ments later the little freshman guard hit again to give Elon a 68-66 lead. The lead was shortlived, however, for the Apps tied it again and moved to 72-68 on Beauchamp’s two free throws and a field goal by John Wil lard, which came with 2;25 left on the clock. Henry Goedeck had 18 and Noble Marshall 17 to lead the scoring for the Elon cagers, but Bill Bowes con tinued his fine play with 13 points and Captain Tommy Davis chipped in 11 counters for Elon.
