Henry Gocdeck, Felon's big pivot star, is pictured above in action against
the Western Carolina Calamounts, going up for a field bucket that dropped
through in spite of a foul by the Catamounts’ Gene McConnell. Goedeck

won by a close 75 to 71 count in the final home game of the Elon season.
Campbell Cagers Topple
Elon In See- Saw Game
Swapping leads and streaks of fan
tastic shooting by both teams featured
the 78 to 77 victory which the Camp
bell College cagers posted over the
Elon Christians on the Camel court
on February 20th, with the Campbell
triumph avenging an earlier win which
Elon had won on the Christian boards.
The Christians and Camels swapped
the lead 26 times, and the score was
knotted five times during the forty
minutes of frantic battling, and two of
the lead changes came in the final
minute of play as Elon's Tommy
avis stealing the ball and ripping the
cords with 45 seconds left to give his
team a 77-76 lead, only to have Camp
bell s Pele Wish swish the nets with 29
seconds remaining.
The Elon cagcrs still had time to get
'he ball and work it down the court
for a fmal “one-shot” try at the buck-
^ f‘"3l Christian shot rolled
o t e ring and was recovered by the
homestanding Camels, who held on
until the buzzer.
The early portions of the battle
were o the cliff-hanger type, with the
swapping ten times in the first

ahead by eight at 39-31 with less

Center Johnny Marshbank and for
ward Garland Davis led the Camels in
grabbing the lead soon after inter
mission, and the home team held vary
ing two to five points advantages dur
ing much of the final half until Goe
deck jumped one to put Elon ahead
71 to 70 with four minutes left.
The rest of the game was a tight
defensive battle, with Elon moving to
a 73-70 lead on Tom McGee’s shot
only to see the Camels bounce back
and grab a three-point lead of their
own at 76 to 73. This set up the hectic
final minute when Davis and Wish
swapped baskets for the final Camp
bell victory.
Johnny Marshbank led both teams
in scoring as he hit 27 points for
Campbell, and all five Camel starters
were in double figures. Henry Goe
deck led Elon with 22 counters, trailed
by Bill Bowes with 17, Tommy Davis
with 16 and Rick Hare with 13 points.

Christian Reilly Comes
Close In Final Minutes
It was just another case of too little
and too late when the Elon Christians
dropped a heart-breaking 75 to 71
Carolinas Conference cage battle to
the Western Carolina Catamounts in
the final home game of the season,
which was played on the floor of
Alumni Memorial Gymnasium on Sat
urday night, February 18th.
The Christians played brilliantly in
the last stages of the game, but they
were sixteen points behind before they
began playing the type of game of
which they are capable. TTie Elon out
fit found difficulty hitting the basket
and fell behind by eleven points at
46-35 at the half-time break, and they
were behind by a 57 to 41 margin
with barely six minutes remaining in
the game.
At that point in the battle, few of
the 3,000 partisan fans would have
given Elon much chance in the game,
but Bill Bowes hit nine straight points,
and Tommy Davis came through with
five counters to put the Christians
right back in the fight. Goedeck and
Davis hit buckets to pull Elon within
two points twic€ at 71-69 and again
at 73-71, but Goedeck’s final shot
rimmed the bucket, and a bad pass
gave the ball to Western Carolina with
only seconds left. Two free throws
after the whistle pushed the Cats to
their final 75-71 margin.
It was a beautiful comeback by the
Christians, who outfought the Cata
mounts on the boards for a game
margin of 36-34 on rebounds, but a
bad first half proved too much handi
cap for the Maroon and Gold Cagers

BOWES EARNS STARRING ROLE
Bill Bowes, towering sophomore forward from Lenox, Mass., has been
playing great ball for the Christian cagers ever since Christmas, having been
in double figures in thirteen consecutive games beginning with the Campbell
tilt on January 9th. During that streak of thirteen battles he has scored a
total of 202 points for an average of 15.5 points per game and has pulled
down 192 rebounds for an average of 14.7 per game. Bowes has teamed
with Henry Goedeck to give Elon a strong one-two punch under the boards
Baseballers Brave Cold
For Outdoor Workouts
Despite the extreme cold wave
which struck the state last week.
Coach Jerry Drake and his Fighting
Christian baseballers moved out of
the gym and on to the practice field
to speed their practice sessions and get
ready for the opening of their upcom
ing 1967 diamond campaign that will
feature 24 tough games.
Coach Drake listed a total of 34
candidates for his Christian nine,
among them being nine lettermen
from last season. The roster, which
is subject to change, showed a total
of nineteen freshmen, so it will be a
youthful outfit which Drake places on
the field in his own initial year of
college coaching.
The nine lettermen who are on this
1967 roster include Burgin Beale,
Larry Collins, Sam Moon and Paul
Amundsen, pitchers; Ronnie Tugwell,
Joe Byrtus and Dempsey Herring, in-
fielders; and Marshall Montgomery
and Bobby Bulla, outfielders. Of this
group, Burgin Beale is a questionable
performer, since he is still recuperat-

Pembroke
Winner Over
Elon Quint
The Pembroke State College cagers
used a tremendous scoring spurt dur
ing the middle moments of the sccond
half to clinch an 86 to 75 victory over
the Elon Christians on the Pembroke
court on February 15th. The victory
was the twelfth in the last thirteen
starts for the Pembroke outfit.
The homestanding Braves put six
men in double scoring figures for the
night, showing the visiting Christians
one of the most widespread and bal
anced offensives they have met this
season. The Christians could show
only three of their players above the
10-point mark.
The Braves started early and moved
out to a 37-32 margin by the halftime
break, and then guard Mike Heath
paccd the second-half surge that mov
ed the Pembroke cagers to a wide
margin that ended with the 11-point
final victory.
Bill Bowes, Elon’s 6-7 sophomore
forward, was the top scorer for both
teams as he popped in 23 points on
eight field buckets and seven of nine
tries from the free throw line. Henry
Goedeck added 15 and Noble Mar
shall 14 points for the Christians.

the way for the winners with 19
points, but he was joined by five of
his mates in the double digit columns.
Among them were Carl Peed with 15,
Henry Byrd with 13 and Jim Gam-
bardella with 12 counters.
