The “New Look” of the Fighting Christians, al ready evident in the an nual Guilford game, is brought through the ef forts of Head Coach Shir- ley “Red” Wilson.Coach 'Vilson comes to the Elon campus with a past record of rnany wins and is well known in both Winston- -^alem and Fayetteville, where he coached highly successful high school teams. In both cities he turn ed in many victories over a period of several years, grabbing off numerous ^‘*®™Pionships. Coach *''ilson was also head coach for the North Caro lina Shrine Bowl squad, where he once more set ne pattern of a good team and a win. year’s football taff at Elon offers other S’^eat names and fine caches who are bringing P^ut the “New Look ’ in football. “Choo wii-v? u is working the backfield and of fers to Elon football play ers his long experience at Carolina and in play ing pro football with the Washington Redskins, Coach Mickey Brown is the line coach and comes with experience at East Carolina and with Coach Wilson at Fayetteville. Coach Jerry Tolley,also from East Carolina by way of Fayetteville, is working with the backs; and Coach Don Kelly, a Catawba graduate,comes from Winston-Salem Reynolds, to drill the Elon ends. The Fighting Christian themselves also offer a definite “New Look, for there’s full forty fresh men on the squad, which numbers twenty letter- inen on its roster, with experienced men filling most ofthe starting posts I The key position at cen ter on the offensive team Is filled by Lee Johnson. Flanking him and knock ing heads at guards are Dickie Wilburn and Wes Gilliam, with Bill Gee and Doug Thomas at the tackles. Elon has two of the best ends in the Con ference, with these p^si” tions filled by Richard McGeorge and Jimmy Waller. Joe Rinaca is at the wingback post, with Gary Jordan at fullback. Perry The “New Look” Elon football leaders are pictured above, including five members of the coaching staff and the two co-captains. The coaches are all new to the Elon grid situation this fall, but the co-captains are veterans of previous Christian cam paigns. Elon Battles Apps In Home Grid Tilt The Elon Christians will be at home for their second straight grid bat tle on Saturday night,when Williams at blocking back and Wright Anderson drawing the first start at tailback. Key men in the defense will be David Oli- phant, Ron Foresta and Marty Bonnett in the backfield and rugged Lloyd Kanipe at a line backer slot. Everyone at Guilford was anxious to see the first game between Elon and Guilford last Satur day night, and Dr. Dan- ieley even dreamed about the outcome of that game in advance. The fans are even more anxious to see this week’s battle with the Appalachian Mountain eers. The Elon players them selves like their “New Look” single-wing of fense. Co-Captain Lloyd Kanipe feels that it is more of a spectator type offense, for fans can tell where the ball is and bet ter understand the plays. Lloyd says the team has more spirit and pep than ever before. the Appalachian Moun taineers come down out of high hill country for a Carolinas Conference tilt. The battle is set for 8 o’clock in Burlington Me morial Stadium, The Mounties have been tabbed by the pre-season prophets as the favorites to grab the Conference title this year, and they have already gotten off to a winning start, so Coach Red Wilson and his boys will face a rugged test in this game. Coach Carl Messere can field no less than 26 letter veterans in the App Black andGoldcolors,and advance reports are that he will use his veterans in platoons to get full ad vantage of their exper ience. The Elon gridders boast 20 lettermen of their own, and Coach Red Wilson has been working his outfit hard this week and aiming for an upset over the invading Moun taineers. Christian Air Play Features The Fighting Christians rode the passing arm of Burgin Beale to a highly pleasing 28 to 21 victory over the Guilford Quakers in the op2ning game of Elon’s 1967 grid cam paign, chalking a mild upset in Burlington Me morial Stadium last Sat urday night before one of the largest crowds in Elon football annals. The Christians came from behind twice in the battle after allowing Guil ford to grab a 11-0 lead in the first seven minutes on touchdowns by Mike Hunt and Danny Wheeling. The first Elon score came on a 47-yard TD pass from Beale to Richard McGeorge, but the kick failed and Guilford led 14-6 at halftime. Joe Rinaca ran the tying touchdown from the one in the third period, and Wright Anderson tossed to Jim Waller to tie the count at 14-all, but Guil ford’s Henry McKay sun ned Elon seconds later when he took the kickoff and sprinted 91 yards to pay dirt to move the Quak ers ahead 21 to 14. It was then that the Christians showed their fight with two scores in the final quarter. An 18- yard Beale pass to Mc George with a kick by Lloyd Kanipe tied the game at 21-all. Then,with less than two minutes left, Elon held Guilford at the Elon forty-five, and Beale completed three passes, the last for 41 yards to Joe Rinaca with 51 sec onds left for the winning score. Kanipe kicked good for the final 28-21 win.
