Back in January Elon’s
new coach, “Rod” Wilson,
felt that his recruiting
program for the coming
season would go under the
heading of “pot luck”,
Wilson, at that time, had
only one assistant, Jer
ry Tolley, to help in the
important job of gather
ing talent. For two men
to undertake the task of
recruiting for a college
football program is a
large assignment. How
ever, they worked hard
and long and signed 35
fine first year prospects.
During the months of
January and February
Wilson drove 3,000 miles
‘mating the bushes for fu
ture stars. He made many
tnps to schools to talk
With the coaches of play
ers whom he felt were
capable of playing col-
ege-level football, and
^ also talked with the
ys themselves and with
tneir parents.
Coach Wilson also made
0 other trips which
turned out to be trips of
sreat importance, for he
ended the two annual
^ii-star games in North

*®°n was only one of
several hundred coaches
who attended those games;
and as for the college
coaches present, they had
one thing on their minds,
signing new talent to fill
the holes in their squads
due to graduation. The
competition is rough on
such occasions.
Evidently, that kind of
competition is the type
that brings out the best
in the Elon mentor, for
the aggressive Wilson
signed twelve of the high
school all-stars to wear
the Maroon and Gold of
the Fighting Christians.
The number twelve may
not sound like many to
some people, but when
you consider that this
number represents ap
proximately ten percent
of all the youngsters who
played in the two games,
the number is quite sig
nificant.

Two of the outstanding performers in Elon’s triumph
over Guilford in the opening game of the new grid
season are shown above. Marty Bonnett (left), a
speedy defensive halfback from Newport News, Va.,
set a new all-time Elon record when he grabbed
down four Guilford passes during the fray, break
ing the old mark of three interceptions set in 1962.
Burgin Beale (right), big tailback from Danville, Va.,
also turned in a brilliant game as he completed
twelve passes, three of them for going for touch
downs against the Quakers. Beale holds no less than
ten all-time Elon records from previous seasons.
Marks Fall As Elon
Wins Over Guilford
The football records
fell as the Fighting Chris
tian gridders used their
“B-B Guns,” meaning
Bonnett and Beale, to
shoot down the Guilford
Quakers 28 to 21 in the
season opener in Burling
ton Stadium on Saturday,
September 23rd.
To begin with, the
crowd itself was a rec
ord breaker, by all odds
the biggest opening game
crowd in Elon history,
and then Marty Bonnett,
a speedy little defensive
halfback from Newport
News, Va., stole four
Guilford passes for a new
record.
But a big part of the
show was by big Burgin
Beale, the other barrel of
Elon’s “B-B Gun.”Beale
entered the game in the
second quarter and pro
ceeded to complete 12 of
30 passes for 223 yards
and three touchdowns that
effectively gunned down
the Quaker gridders.
It just so happened that
Beal himself set no less
than 42 new Elon grid
marks that night, for each
and every time he threw
a pass and each and ev
ery time he completed a
pass he set a new all-
time Elon grid record.
Beale already held all-
time Elon career records
for total passes thrown
and completed, so he just
upped the ante each time
he threw.
The Elon junior, who
holds a total of ten all-
time Elon passing and of
fensive marks after only
two years of play in a
Christian uniform, seems
sure to set still other rec
ords before this 1967 grid
campaign is ended. After
the Guilford game, he
needed only 36 more
yards to set a new career
mark for total passing
yardage. He has now com
pleted 192 passes out of
391 attempts for a total
of 2,326 yards of passing.

Elon Takes
Early Lead
In Contest
The Fighting Christians
used their new Single Wing
attack for two touchdowns
against the Appalachian
Mountaineers here last
Saturday night, but a leaky
defense continued to pla
gue the Elon gridders as
they allowed theMounties
five TD’s for a 34 to 13
victory in Burlington Me
morial Stadium.
The Christians scored
first, with Joe Rinaca
sprinting 29 yards on the
key play and then dash
ing four yards for the
score that netted a 6-0
lead. The Apps then came
back with a 65-yard drive
with the aid of. an Elon
penalty that ended with a
plunge by Pat Murphy for
the tying score.
With only seconds left
in the half and a 6-6
tie, Elon elected to go to
the air, and the Apps in
tercepted at midfield to
set up the go-ahead touch
down. This score came on
a 15-yard scoring toss
from Murphy to Agle, and
the Mounties led 13 to
6 at halftime.
A long pass from Mur
phy to Ferrell pur r'ln
Apps on the Elon one, and
Larry Jarvis bucked over
for the 19-6 touchdown
in the third quarter. Elon
came back on a pass from
Burgin Beale to Richard
McGeorge for a score
early in the fourth quar
ter to cut the margin to
19-13, but two other
Mountaineer TD’s in the
fourth quarter ran out
the final 34 to 13 count.
Burgin Deale, Elon tail
back, threw only twelve
passes and completed four
for 30 yards in contrast
with his aerial show in
the Guilford game, but the
big junior ran for 82 yards
and topped the century
mark once more in total
offense.
