PglDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1967 maroon and gold PAGE 3 these five fighting CHRISTIAN CAGERS HAVE BEEN STARTERS IN EARLY - SEASON GAMES SPORTS SPOTS mim By EDDIE OSBORNE Elon enters upon a new sport as the Christians prepare for this 1967-68 season of wrestling. 1 say new sport, although it is not strictly new at Elon, for the Christians did participate in the mat game prior to World War II. However, this will be Elon’s first wrestling team in a full quarter century. The Elon matmen, di rected by Coach Mickey Brown, who is assisted by Prof. Paul Sebo, con tinued the mat activity started last year by Pro fessor Sebo. That team did not really get into action last winter, but the college has put its support behind the team this year with the pur chase of the best wrest ling mat in the Confer ence at great expense and the provision of new uni forms and warm-up suits. The Christians face some tough competition, hut Coaches Brown and Sebo have had trouble get ting their team into ac tion. A meet with the Carolina Freshmen on December 2nd was post poned, and then a second engagement with Guilford last week was cancelled by the Quakers on the day of the meet. Present plans call for fhe Elon matmen to swing into action against the uke Blue Devil varsity ^t Durham this weekend. hat meet will wind up action until after Christ- holidays, with other f'leets already scheduled p^th Methodist College, and Guilford, uuitiona 1 engagem ents are being sought. Even against experien ced competition, the Christian mat squad will be exactly sucking air, for Coaches Brown and Sebo have some exper ienced boys of their own on a squad which ranges from 123 pounds to the heavyweight divisions. Ralph Moore is the top man at the heavyweight level, for he holds seve ral weight-lifting records and participated in wrest ling and boxing at Notre Dame; and Steve Helms, a Clemson transfer, is also battling at the heavy weight spot. Helms had two years mat experience at Sanford High. Emery Moore, speedy footballer, held several high school wrestling ti tles in New York state at 191 pounds, and both John Romano and Bob Stevens are also out for the 191- pound post. Romano won an AAU title while wrest ling at Frederick Military Academy. Larry Raines is at the 177-pound spot, and never lost a match in three years at Eastern Ala mance High School. Steve Harrison is top contender at 167 pounds, and Tom Jernigan is in at 160 pounds. He had three years experience at Fay etteville High. Gary Dean wrestled at both Winston-Salem Rey nolds and at East Caro lina and only lost one match to the Southern Conference champion. Another well experienced grappler is Phil Larra- bee, who captains the Elon squad, and who posted a brilliant four-year rec ord in high school in Vir ginia. ^Continued on p-ge 4) Quakers Down Elon In 85-66 Cage Tilt The five bovs pictured above, each with his own ball, have occupied starting roles in most of the early-season cage contests for the Elon Christians this season.
