FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1968 maroon and gold PAGE 3 Elon Tramples Camels, 87-68 ACTION SCENE IN ELON BATTLE WITH LENOIR RHYNE F Some of the action seen in Elon’s loss to Lenoir Rhyne in the recent Carolinas Conference game on the Elon floor is shown above, with Elon’s Steve Caddell (left)^ and Noble Marshall (center) throwing up a double-team defense against the Bears Dana Olson (Number 21), who is trying to dribble by for a shot at the basket. The Bears won the game 72 to 64, SPORTS SPOTS By EDDIE OSBORNE The Fighting Chris tians take time away from exams and travel to High Point on Satur day night of this week to tangle with the striped Panthers, and everyone is hoping that the Maroon and Gold cagers can show a more sustained attack than they displayed in their first meeting with the High Pointers here in early season. At that time the Christians, who ysre hindered by a few injuries, dropped a hard- fought and very close de cision to the Panthers. At the time of that first clash with High Point the Christians were minus the services of Bobby At- kins, who failed to see action in pre-holiday games. At that time, too. Noble Marshall was still nobbled to a great ex tent by an injury. Marshall had picked up ^ campus fad during the autumn term when he was wearing a cast on IS foot, and Atkins had tarted a fad of his own nen he came out with a u*'- hand instead nth Thus far, most tner students have been ‘eiuctant to join the At- fad, although Dickie Wilburn has been follow ing the hand-cast style since Christmas. Noble Marshall did see action against Ae Panthers in that earlier game with High Point here, but he was not up to his usual style of play, and the Christians miss ed his clever playmaking. The Elon cagers led the Panthers in the early part of that game, but they fell short in the closing min utes and dropped the early part of that game, but they fell short in the clos ing minutes and dropped a heart-breaking 67 to 63 decision. Let us hope that our cagers can reverse that decision this week end. It will not be easy, however, for the Panthers are led by scoring ace Gene Little, who usually averages from 20 to 25 points per game and ser ves as the playmaker for the High Pointers. An other big threat for the Panthers is 6-10 giant Jim Picka in the pivot spot, and he will give Elon’s rugged Henry Goe- deck a tough battle in the rebounding. (Continued on page 4) Bears Down Elon Quint By 72 To 64 The Lenoir Rhyne Bears overcame an early Elon lead and never trail ed again as they defeated the Fighting Christian ca gers 72 to 64 in a Caro lina Conference game which was played on the Elon Court on Saturday, January 6th. The loss was Elon’s fifth straight in Carolinas Conference play. Playing their first home game in four weeks, the Christian cagers jumped to a quick 9-2 lead in the game as Bill Bowes paced an early Elon drive, but the visiting Bears came back to take the lead at 12-11 on a pair of quick baskets midway the first half, and they went on to claim a sweep of the home-and-home ser ies for the year. The Bears not only took the lead at that point, but they took advantage of a lengthy cold streak by the Christians and swept to a lopsided 34 to 23 margin at the half- time hreak- Henry Goedeck, Elon’s big center, was the top scorer for both teams for the night as he rammed home 11 field buckets for 22 points, but he failed to get enough help from his mates. Tom McGee had 13 and Bill Bowes 10 points, but no other Christian could reach double figures in the tilt. (Continued on Page 4) Christians Revenge Early Season Loss It was a case of sweet revenge as the Fighting Christian cagers played perhaps their finest game of the season and tramp led the Campbell College Camels 87 to 68 on the Elon floor on Monday night, January 8th, for the win evened the score for an earlier 19-p_/int loss to the Camels on their own floor. A major factor in the Elon victory was the tre mendous rebounding show staged by the Christians, who set a new all-iime Elon team mark when they pulled down 69 loose balls during the fray. The old mark was 67 rebounds set apinst Frederick in 1963-64, when Jesse Branson was leading the Christians under the backboards. Leading the Elon re bound play was Richard McGeorge, who plays with the same rugged strength he showed in winning all- star honors in football. The big boy raked in 13 rebounds during the game, with Henry Goe deck getting 14, Tommy Davis 12 and Bill Bowes 10 for the night. The most rebounds by last year’s team in a single was 49 against Pfeiffer. Coach Bill Miller called “hustle” the big reason why his Christians could reverse the count J CAGE GAMES Elon 74, Ga. TOM McGEE Led Campbell Win on the strong Campbell squad, which had troun ced Elon 92 to 73 in a battle at Campbell back in December. Elon rolled to a 16-S lead in the first five min utes, and by halftime the Christians were out front by a whopp'ng 40 to 24 margin. This lead came on a balanced scoring at tack, for Elon had not one boy in double figures at the break. The Camels staged a slight comeback in the second half, and they cut the Elon lead to eight points midway that final half, but the Chris tians would not be denied as they pulled out a long lead again and won their second game in three starts since Christmas, Top scorer in Elon’s attack was Tom McGee, speedy guard, who had 18 points on five field goals and eight of nine free throws. Henry Goedeck and Tommy Davis each had 15 points for Elon, although Goedeck fouled out with several minutes to go. Gary Davis and Cordell Wise led the Camels with 17 points each. THE LINE-UPS; Pos.
