FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9. 1968 maroon and gold PAGE 3 Elon-Catawba Split 2 Games CAMERA RECORDS HISTORIC MOMENTS IN MAT MEET i Win Or Lose By BOB WILLIAMS To sum up the fortunes of Coach Bill Miller’s Fighting Christians so far during this cage season, one would have to write ‘‘Disappointing,” for the boys have not lived up to the pre-season hopes of the coach and the fans. However, I feel that the coach and fans are due for some fine surprises as the play swings into the spring semester. In their second contest against the Panthers of High Point College, the Chrisians played well and did everything except win the game. Many will say that in the records you do not read how well they played but whether they won or lost. That is so true, but such a defeat as that 92 to 90 loss to High Point the final second, com- when victory seemed so close, so often leaves unhealed wounds. Man has °®en described as an “ap petitive creature,” never ™ be satisfied. So, the '^nristians were left un- ^till hungry. That hunger has been proven in at least two of ® since the sec- nd High Point contest, for Christians looked sreat in their 102 to 88 in over Catawba, a game which Elon topped the 100-point mark for the first time in several years, and also in last week’s 80 to 73 win over Presbyterian at Clinton, S C That PC win moved Elon within two games of eighth-place Newberry, and it brought somehwat closer the Elon tourna ment berth for the Con ference meet later this month. With that tourney in Winston-Salem getting closer, the boys realize that every game is a cru cial one, and they are flashing a new look that bodes well for the future, a new look that will pro vide that little extra power needed for vic tories. This new look is given a powerful boost by the addition to the roster re cently of a healthy Richard McGeroge, who has just recently begun to display his basketball prowess. His play against High Point was inspired and made the High Point fans glad that it was the second meeting of the two teams and not the first. McGeorge has also shown power in both scoring and rebounding in other tilts. The boys have worked hard all season, wth Coach Bill Miller and his able assistant, Charlie Van Lear, laboring many hours after the lights are out. With all this in mind and with an eye on the fine coaching, along with fine team spirit and team play, the Fighting Chris tians are going to be tough to beat. Panthers Win In Loop Tilt The Elon Christians played the season and one of their best games in several years and still lost a bitterly fought 92 to 90 decision to the High Point Panthers inaCaro- linas Conference tilt on the High Point floor on January 20th. The Christians, hitting a sensational 64.6 per cent of their floor shots in the first half , grab bed a quick lead and never trailed the Panthers until the very last second of the game, when towering Jim Picka tapped in a basket to break a 90-90 tie and give the Panthers the game. Noble Marshall, speedy Elon guard, was nothing short of sensational as he banged in 24 points for the top score of his two years at Elon, hitting on ten field goals and 4 of 6 free throws. Most of his baskets were from long range, with four straight at one time from distan ces up to 25 feet. THE LINE-UPS: Pos. Elon (90)HighPt(92) F. Bowes (15) Littles (25) F. Davis (2) Colbert(12) C. Rivals Top Century Score In Contests The two action pictures from the recent Elon College victory over the Methodist College grapplers from Fayetteville represent a historic moment in Elon College sports history, for the two pictures portray the first mat meet ever held in Elon s Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, they show the first two falls ever recorded by Elon wrestlers and also show key points in the first mat victory in Elon annals. The top picture shows David Oliphant, speedy Elon senior, just when he pinned the shoulders of his opponent from Methodist College; while the bottom shot shows Emery Moore when he recorded the pin victory over his opponent in ±e heavyweight bout, a pin which won the team victory for Elon by a 21-12 score. The Elon Christians and the Catawba Indians traded scoring barrages as the old rivals split a pair of Conference cage battles within a 48-hour period on January 25th and January 27th, with each team tripping the 100-point mark in chalk ing their victories. The Christian baske- teers delighted the home fans on January 25th when they rolled in high gear to take a 102 to 88 vic tory over the Indians in a battle on the Elon floor, but two nights later the Catawba outfit was just as hot and hotter to gain revenge in a 123 to 96 contest. The Elon outfit had no less than six men hitting in double figures as they toppled the Indians in the battle here. After lead ing by a scant one point at half-time, the Chris tians really rolled in the final half to top the cen tury mark for the first time in three years. THE SUMMARY: Pos.EIon(102)Catawba(88) F. INDIANS WIN Dwight Durante went on a real scoring rampage as he rolled in 52 points to pace the Indians to their revenge win by a 123 to 96 margin at Ca tawba two nights later on January 27th. The Indians were ahead 56-41 at halftime and add ed 67 points in the final half. Elon again had six men in double figures for the game, but this fact meant nothing in the face of the red-hot Catawba CAGE GAMES Elon 74, Ga. Southern 73, Elon 70, Shorter 52. Apps Win 87 To 75 In Game At Boone Tom McGee banged in 20 points, and three other Elon cagers were in dou ble figures for the night, but it was all to no a- vail as the Appalachian Mountaineers pulled out in the second half to de feat the Fighting Chris tians 87 to 75 in a Con ference cage battle at Boone on January 29th, The game, which prov ed another setback in E- lon’s bid for a tourna ment berth, saw Elon play it close with theMounties for three quarters of the game, with the score tied at 53-all with ten min utes left to play. At that point Johnny Blanton hit four buckets straight to place the Apps to a safe lead and the win. While Tom McGee hit 20 points to tie Appala chian’s Bill Sposato for the game leadership, both Elon and the Apps had others who scored well. Tommy Davis, Richard McGeorge and Bobby At kins were all in double digits for Elon, while the Apps had a total of five men above the lO-point mark. THE LINE-UPS: Pos.Elon (75) App. (87) F.
