The tournament got un derway on Wednesday of this week and will contin ue through tonight and ■''aturday night, with the action taking place in the huge Winston-Salem Coli seum and certainly we who support the various teams in the tournament can en-- jiiy much better accom- modarions that have been offered in the much srnalier gymnasium at Lexington in recent yea rs. As this issue of rhe Maroon and (ioid hits the campus and brings this column to the readers, two nights of thebigtour-- nament will have already heen played, and four of the eight teams who won I'erths in the annual meet will have bitten the dust of defeat. 1 here’s one satisfac- ti^on, however, and that is that our Fighting Chris tians were there in the ‘‘rst round to put up a *>8ht for the laurels. Re sults of that first game unknown at this writ- 'fS. hut let us hope that o still have the Ma- roon and (iold bucketeers f" ,"-ind for the semi- ‘tnals tonight. The wins were over Guilford twice, Methodist C-ollege and N. C-. State, while losses were to Duke, Pembroke and Carolina Freshmen. The Christian wrestlers shown left to right above are as follows; Assistant C^oach Paul Sebo; (jary Dean , of Charlotte; David Oliphant, of Mooresville; Phil Larrabee, of Virginia Beach, Va„; Bobby Hughes, of Madison; Fernery Moore, of Schenectady, N.Y.; Ralph Moore, of Schenectady, N.Y., Bill Franks, of Wilmington, Del.; Mike Hughes, of Madison; Tom Jernigan, of Fay- ettevillc; Buster Alston, of Newport News, Va.; and C/Oach Mickey Brown* Members of the squad not present for the picture included .lack Shirley , of Sterling, Va.; Roger Norman, of Elkin; .lohn Goins, of Winston-Salem; and John Rorhano, of Virginia Beach, Va. the national small-col- lege ranks and have brought much attention to our c;onference. Other teams which bat tled for first division spots through most of the season have been c:ataw- ba. Western Carolina,Le noir Rhyne and Atlantic t^hristian, and as this col-- umn was written it was still undecided as to which three of the group would join with (’.uilfordromake the top four teams in the tournament pairings. I he High Point, Appa lachian and Flon squads were already in rhe tour nament as the final week of regular-season play began, but there had been a lime during the season when it appeared that our Christian cagers might miss the tournament for rhe first time in history. They dropped seven in a row to C.onferencc oppon ents before they could ger started, but they then put together six wins in sev en starts to move into the select eight teams that entered the tournament e- liminations. As a matter of tact, only the first and second spots in regular season a rc‘ of value as the tour ney starts. The two top teams automatically SO into separate upper and lower brackets, and the other teams had to draw for positions at the pair ings meeting held last Sunday. , ['he third and fourth teams had to draw to see which would be bracket ed with the first ranking team and which would into rhe bracket with the second club. Once the top four teams were placed, the other four teams were drawn to determine first- round pairings.
