Quakers Down Elon Nine, 7-2,
In Tilt On Christian Diamond
F-rratic fielding and
scanty hitting proved fa
tal for the Elon Chris
tians as they dropped a
7 to 2 decision to the
C>uilford Quakers in the
F.lon baseball opener,
played on the Elon field
March 18th.
I’he (,;histians could
get only five hits off the
combined pitching of
Guilford’s Bill Burchette
and Ed Parker, and the
Elon outfit had five field
ing miscues, three of
them in the outfield, to
contribute to the Guil
ford scoring.
Ihe combined result
was to spoil the colle
giate pitching debut for
big John Austin, Elon’s
fine freshman mound
star, who won national
acclaim for his pitching
in high school and Amer
ican Legion play.
Austin stayed through
nine and two-thirds inn
ings and allowed nine hits,
but he kept the hits well
scattered in all except
the seventh frame when
the Quakers got to him
for four safeties. It was
Elon errors afield which
contributed to his down
fall, for Guilford show
ed only two earned runs.
Larry Collins, who had
a double and single, was
the top hitter for F^lon,
while Cirayson got three
and Wittington two hits to
lead the victorious Quak
ers. Don Brady had a
solo homer for Elon and
Tom Wittington homered
for Guilford.
Guilford: 7 R, 911, 0 E
Elon: 2 R. 5H, 5E.
