The Guilford Quakers

in the first three innings
and went on to defeat the
Elon Christians 9 to 0
on the Guilford field on
April 6th.
The hard-hitting Quak
ers hopped on Joe Byr-
tus, hlon’s starting pit
cher for nine hits in the
three opening innings, and
Byrtus had to give way
in the third to Steve Bird,
who scattered five hits
and held the Guilford nine
scoreless until giving way
to a pinch-hitter in the
bottom of the sixth. Al
len Colenda then worked
the two final innings on
the mound for fc,lon.
The Christians them
selves found the offerings
of Guilford’s Ed Parker
tough, and they had only

First 2 Meets
The Elon College tennis
team broke even in its
first two meets, drop
ping a hotly contested
meet to Atlantic Christian
at Wilson on April 2nd by
a 7 to 0 count and re
versing their fortunes
with a smashing 9 to 0
victory over Greensboro
College on the Elon courts
on April 8th.
The meet with Atlantic
Christian was much
closer than the score
indicated for all singles
and doubles matches were
close, with Don Brown in
Jingles and both of the
-Ion doubles pairs car
rying their matches to

The members of the Elon College tennis team for this 1968 season are pictured
above. Those pictured left to right are John Walton, of Burlington; Melvin Pierce,
of Winston-Salem; Sandy Carrington, of Lynchburg, Va.; Don Brown, of Jack
sonville, Fla.; Bob Freeman , of Simsbury, Conn.; George Rorrer, of Madison;
and John McConnell, of Portsmouth, Va. Not present when the picture was taken
was Jim Ellington, sophomore letterman from Graham. The netters dropped
their opening meet of the year to Atlantic Christian, but several of the singles
and doubles matches were close and went to three sets, indicating promise for
better luck before the season ends.
Two New Elon Records Set
In Cinder Loss To Campbell
A Victory in the mile
relay, final event of the
day gave the Campbell
College track squad a 70
1/2 to 69 1/2 victory over
the Elon track squad in a
meet on the Elon trackon
April 2nd.
There were two new
Elon records during the
meet. Ralph Moore set a
new mark with his toss of
141 feet 4 inches in the
discus; and Ron Bolton
set a new record when he
leaped 12 feet in the pole
vault.

runs in the top of the first

The Cats came right
back in the bottom of that
first frame and plated five
runs on two walks, a sin
gle, an error and Bill
Wofford three run homer.
The home team also add
ed two counters in the
second when Ron Wall
contributed a two-run
round-tripper.
With four homers fea
turing the first tilt, the
sluggers out-did them
selves when each team
had three round trip
clouts in the nightcap.
Elon’s Larry Collins hit
a homer in the first, and
Mel Cliburne duplicated
the feat in the second; but
the Cats matched this
performance as Red
Thompson homered in the
first and Bill Wofford
blasted a duplicate in the
second. All of these were
solo blasts.
The Catamounts clinch
ed the win with five runs
in the fourth on three
singles, a walk and a
three-run homer by John
Downs. Elon’s final
homsr came in the se
venth when JimTiy Frie
singer straightened one of
Jim Bullin’s slants.
Jim Friesinger and
Don Brady led the Elon
batting, each getting three
safties in the two games,
each including one homer.

Three Elon boys chalk

Linker winning the shot
and javelin, and Foster
Paulette winning both the
880 and the mile runs.
