PC Trackmen Down Elon 85-60 In Meet CREWS BREAKS ELON’S OLD 220 YARD DASH MARK The Presbyterian Blue Stockings grabbed ele ven of seventeen first pla ces and took a clean sweep of the high jump as they defeated the Christian cindermen on the Elon track here April 29th by an 85 to 60 score. This meet was the last home contest on the Elon schedule for the Chris tians for the season. The Elon cindermen will go to Catawba on Friday for their final dual meet and will later compete in both the NAIA District 26 meet and Conference meet. The Elon 440-Yard re lay quartet set one new Elon record when it won the event in a 44.3 sec onds performance. The team included Tom Jerni- gan, Joe Rinaca, Don Crews and David Oliphant. The Elon outfit got a- way in front against Len oir Rhyne yesterday with a solo run in the first inning. With one out,Jim Friesinger singled, ad- vanced on a walk and scored on Joe Byrtus single. The 1-0 lead held up for eight innings, with Burgin Beale pitching steady ball all the way, but Dave Matheny walk ed after one out in the eighth, and Mike McRee (Continued on page 4, The jet age seemingly arrived on the Elon campus when Don Crews, freshman sprinter from Greens boro, hit the Christian track out beyond the Alumni Memorial Gymnasium. Crews has won double sprint honors in most of Elon’s meets this year, and Crews broke the twelve-year old 220-yard dash record set by Eddie Bridges back in 1956 when the Gate City youngster ran the furlong in 22 seconds flat at Atlantic Christian. Crews has been under 10 seconds twice in the century, pushing close to Eddie Bridge s 100 yard mark of 9.8 seconds. Pfeiffer Tops Elon Two errors, a walk and a wild pitch before a man was out in the first inn ing gave Pfeiffer a sin gle run, and that was the only score as the Fal cons went on to eke a 1 to 0 victory over the Elon Christians at Pfief- fer on April 26th, with Elon falling victim to a no-hitter by Vic Worry. After that single un earned run, neither Pfeif fer’s Vic Worry nor Elon’s John Austin would yield a score as Austin let the league-leading Falcons down with two widely - spaced singles, only to lose the decision to a no-hitter thrown at Elon by Pfeiffer’s ace moundsman. John Austin pitched by far his best game of his freshman season for Elon as he struck out eleven men and walked only three while limiting the Fal cons to one single in the third and another in the ninth.
