Elon students are now looking ahead to next year with more en thusiasm than ever be fore. Much has been done this year to make life at Elon more comfortable and more profitable for the students of the future. Although it will not be ready next fall, the pro jected addition of a new and modern physical edu cation gymnasium and center, this addition should be ready in the fall 1969, and at that time of students will no longer have to worry about the gymnasium being in use, for there will then be space enough for all ac tivities. Lack of proper facili ties for the Elon student to develop his body as "'ell as his mind has been a major drawback to col- ®Se life on the Elon campus, and the correc tion of this lack in the near future is a posi tive step in making Elon College a better place for students. The addition within the next two years, the phys ical education center will vastly improve the intra mural spirts program and will help the average Elon student to become more interested in ath- Ictics* Students returning next fall should see a fine Elon football squad taking the field. Some of Elon s stars of last fall will graduate, but this year s experience will make all the underclassmen just a little bit tougher to beat, and that means that the Fighting Christian grid- ders will be a better club to watch next fall. Also, it gives me plea sure just here to tion the return coaching staff of Gary Mattocks, (Continued on Page 4) men- to the Coach which The Fighting Christian baseballers closed out their home diamond play in great style as they whipped the Appalachian Mountaineers 8 to 3 on the Elon field on May 4th. It closed out Elon with an 8-10 mark in the Con ference. The Christians started the scoring in the second by plating ons run on a pair of singles and an Catawba Wins In 10-4 Game At Salisbury The Catawba Indians came back in the middle innings for ten runs and a 10 to 4 victory over the Elon Christians at Salisbury on May 3rd with the win almost certainly clinching for Catawba the fourth spot in the annual Carolinas Conference baseball tournament. The Elon nine was a- way in front in the early racks, scoring a singleton run in the first and three others in the third for a 4 to 0 lead, but the Chris tians were able to get only two hits after that time and saw their lead fade (Continued on Page 4) error. They added other singleton counters in the third and fourth, the one in the third coming on a walk and a triple by Mel Cliborne and the one in the fourth on a solo homer by Jerry Midkiff, The visiting Apps got their first two runs in the top of the fifth on an in terference penalty, abase on balls and a booming triple by Catcher Bob Billings. The Mounties scored one in the sixth but no more as Burgin Beale turned in a 4-hit mound job, marred only by a tendency to wild ness which netted nine walks. The Christians really put the game on ice when they plated four runs in the fifth. Three walks fill ed the bases, and catcher Don Brady boomed a grand-slam homerun to clear the bases. A sin gle Elon run in the sixth ended all scoring for the day. The scores: Appalachian..3R. 4H. IE. Elon... 8R. 9H.0E. Dolecki, McLean(5),Cro mer (6) and Billings; Beale and Brady, Bulla (9). HR—Brady, Midkiff (both of Elon). WP— Beale. Ralph Moore, who has broken the old Elon College discus mark this season and has bettered the qld Elon javelin record, has played a big part in the scoring for the Fighting Christian track squad during its very successful 1968 season. Moore, who hails from Schenectady, N. Y., and who transferred to Elon from Notre Dame, set a new discus mark in the very first meet of the year and then upped the record to 142 feet 2 inches in the later meet with Appalachian. He threw the javelin better than ten feet beyond the existing Elon mark in the Ca tawba meet, but missed the chance to set a new record for himself when a Ca tawba man won first place in the event. Pembroke Is Winner Of Contest Here The Pembroke Braves used some potent hitting and took advantage of eight Elon errors to turn back the Fighting Chris tian baseballers 12 to 10 in a ragged diamond bat tle on the Elon field on May 2nd. The game opened on the ragged note that dominat ed play all day, for the Pembroke outfit plated four runs on a single, walk, error and a boom ing homerun by Tom Will iams; and Elon cam 2 right back in the bottom of the inning for three runs on a hit batsman, a pair of doubles by Jim Friesing- er and Mel Cliburne and a single by Bob Godfrey. Both teams got single runs in the third, and Elon also added a solo score in the sixth, but the Pembroke outfithamTier- ed into £lon*s sta.rting pitcher, Alan Colenda.for five runs in the top of the seventh and forced him to the showers. Bur gin Beale came on in relief and gave up an other run before he re tired the side. Mel Cliburne had a dou ble and a pair of sin gles, and Bob Godfrey had two singles to lead the Elon hitting. SETS NEW 440 HURDLES RECORD .V- ' hurdler and middle-dis- Sty .*■' Joe Freve, Elon College tance star from Virginia Beach, Va., took turns with Rusty Roberts in setting new Elon records in the 440-yard hurdles during this 1968 cinder campaipn, but Freve took the last turn in the record-setting when he raced the long hurdle event in an even 60 seconds in the Elon victory over Atlantic Christian College at Wilson.
