'Ttr A ^i 11- By JOE TEAGUE Coach Jerry Drake’s Fighting Christian base- ballers are in the midst of fall practice, with thir ty-five players having reported and staging a stiff battle for starting positions on next spring’s varsity nine. Coach Drake declares himself well pleased with the determination, hustle and general attitudes of the players, who include ten letterman veterans from last spring. Beginning his third year as head baseball coach at Elon, Coach Drake says, “We need improved defense, mainly plugging up leaky play in the infield during criti cal situations, and we are trying to find three start ing pitchers and at the same time trying to im prove our .194 squad bat ting average of last sea son during these fall practice sessions.” The Christian coach is especially well pleased with the fact that his Elon diamond squad has won three off-season practice battles. The Christians have split two autumn games with the High Point Panthers, having defeat ed the Panthers 5 to 3 in the opener and dropped a 7 to 2 decision to the Pointers at High Point. The third game produced a 12 to 3 victory over a strong semi-pro outfit from South Boston, Va. Dewey Capps, a let terman pitcher, got cre dit for the win over High Point, although Coach Drake used several moundsmen against the Pointers, including Roger Slaughter, Capps, Bob Caviness, Bill Bond, Don Oakes and Gary Brown. H. J. Newcomb had the heavy stick for Elon as he delivered a triple in the bottom of the fifth to drive in three runs. The return engagement with the High Point nine was not so fortunate, with Elon dropping a 7 to ^ decision and getting only one hit off three Panther pitchers. Ron Brown, sophomore shortstop, got (Continued on page 'i) Coach Red Wilson, who directs the fortunes of the Elon College football squad as head coach, is pic tured above with the two co-captains of this 1968 Fighting Christian grid squad. The captains are Lloyd Kanipe, of Charlotte, senior linebacker; and Wes Gilliam (standing), of Elon College, a senior defensive end, Kanipe was a co-captain las t year and was honored with a repeat election for this fall. In addition to the two elected co-captains, there has been an appointed honorary co-captain for each of the early games on the schedule, with Burgin Beale and David Oliphant honored for the two opening games. Elon To Host C-N Gridders The Fighting Christian gridders face another tough test when they play host to the Carson- Newman Eagles from ov er Tennessee way in a battle at the Burlington Memorial Stadium at 8 o’clock Saturday night, for the Eagles have shown plenty of power in early tilts. The Eagles trampled Catawba 34 to 14 and then trounced Western Carolina 28 to 7, and Christian supporters can remember that Western Carolina romped on Guil ford 35 to 7. That means a tough game for Elon this weekend. BREAKS ARM Larry Raines, star de fensive back, suffered a broken arm in the Appa lachian game and is out of action for the rest of the 1968 season. First Period Again Fatal To Christians First quarters can be fatal to Elon football for tunes, and the Fighting Christian gridders may seek to have first quar - ters eliminated entirely after Presbyterian top pled Elon 31 to 17 by virtue of a 21-point up rising in the opening per iod, It was the second consecutive game in which that first period had proven fatal, for the Apps also scored 21 points in the opener to down Elon the week be fore. Two long punt returns and a home-run pass pro duced the Presbyterian TD’s in that opening per iod, with Bob Hackle scoring from the two af ter a 30-yard runback and with Dan Eckstein dashing 58-yards with a punt for the second score. Bill Kirtland passed 45 yards to Hackle for the third TD, with kicks good each time. The Christians hit the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal by Grover Hels- ley to cut the score to 14-3 at one time, but PC led at the quarter 21 to 3, and a PC field goal boosted it to 24-3 before Elon scored its first touchdown on a 3-yard plunge by Burgin Beale to cut the halftime count to 24-10. Elon drove 72 yards as the second half open ed, with Burgin Beale passes netting 51 of the yards, and Beale himself dashed the final three for his second TD of the night, Helsley kicked good to cut the margin to 24- 17, but The Blue Hose intercepted an Elon pass at the Elon twenty- nine, and on the next play Kirtland passed 29 to Eckstein for the 31-17 score.
