In Scholars Series
SIX NEW MEMBERS JOIN ELON BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Dr. Robert A. Howard,
professor of art at the Un
iversity of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, who is as
sociated with the Ackland
Art Center and has won
acclaim as a sculptor,
visited the Elon College
campus on Wednesday
night of this week as the
fourth in the series of
Visiting Scholars Lec
turers.
The Visiting Scholars
program, which features
speakers in many and
varied fields of the aca
demic field, is sponsored
by the Piedmont Univer
sity Center, which in
cludes a group of twenty
of the colleges and un
iversities in the Piedmont
section of North Carolinao
Coming as the fourth
in the series of Visiting
Scholars Lecturers to
the Elon campus this
year, preceding visitors
for addresses have in
cluded Dr. Paul B. Weisz,
in the field of biology and
zoology; Dr. W. T.Jones,
in the field o f philoso
phy; and Dr. John Span-
ier, in the field of polit
ical science and history.
Dr. Howard, who now
resides in Chapel Hill, is
a native of Oklahoma, and
he attended Phillips Uni-
versity in Enid, Okla., and
the University of Tulsa
as an undergraduate, re
ceiving the A.B. degree
from the latter institu
tion. He later had addi
tional graduate work in
art at the Ossip Zadkine
in Paris.
The guest lecturer
came to Elon with a very
fine record of accomp
lishments in the field of
art, including national ex
hibitions of his works in
sculpture in many and
widely scattered cities in
the United States, among
them Syracuse, N. Y.,
Philadelphia, Detroit,
New York City, Los An
geles and Minneapolis,
Minn.
Howard has written
many articles on the sub
ject of art and sculpture,
and his works have ap
peared in numerous of the
learned publications in
that field of art.
Hall Of Fam* Award
A. E. Finley, Raleigh
businessman and philan
thropist, has been award
ed the North Carolina
citizenship award by the
National Football Hall of
Fame.
The award was pre
sented by the N. C. Chap
ter of the National Foot
ball Foundation.
NEWCOMERS FOR ELON FACULTY
Among the newcomers on the Elon College faculty
for this 1968-69 term are Dr. Kenneth A. Smith
(left), who is an assistant professor in the Depart
ment of Business Administration; and Prof. Roger
C. Crimson (right), who is an assistant professor
in the IX'partment of Mathematics. Dr. Smith, who is
a native of Pilot Mountain, is a graduate of Wake For
est and hold the doctorate in law from the Wake Forest
Law School. Professor Crimson, who is native of Dur
ham, attended Elon College for two years but later
graduated from the University of North Carolina at
(.hapel Hill and did his graduate work in mathematics
at Duke L'niversity.

Elon College Lists Six New
Members For Trustees Board
Six new members have
been added recently to the
Elon College board of
trustees. The addition of
the new members, an
nounced from the office
of Dr. J. E. Danieley,
Elon president, gives the
trustee group its full
membership quota of
thirty-six.
The new trustees,list
ed in alphabetical order,
include Mrs. Lula Browne
Helvenston, of Orlando,
Fla.; Richard J. Holland,
of Windsor, Va.; Wood
row W. Piland, of Ports
mouth, Va.; J. J. Pointer,
of Virginia Beach, Va.;
Dr. T. E. Powell, III,
Burlington; and Thomas
B. Sain, of Burlington.
Mrs. Helvenston, who
is a graduate of Elon
College, taught religious
education at Elon for one
year after graduation and
served as dean of women
for a brief period. She
later taught Bible in the
public schools in both
North Carolina and Flor
ida. She has been active
in the work of the Pres
byterian church for many
years and has travelled
in more than 50 countries
with her husband, who is
a retired Air Force Col
onel. She has won recog
nition as a lecturer,par
ticularly on topics con
cerning Russia and Pal
estine.
Richard J. Holland,
veteran Virginia banker,
is a graduate of the Un
iversity of Virginia, but
he also studied at Vir
ginia Military Institute
and Harvard. He has long
been a leader in affairs
of the United Church of
Christ and in various fra
ternal and civic organi
zations of the Windsor
area. He is an officer
of the Virginia Bankers
Association and a mem
ber of the staff of Vir
ginia Governor Mills E.
Godwin.
Woodrow W. Piland,
veteran school admini"
strator in Portsmouthj
Va., is a graduate of Elon
College and holds the
master’s degree from
William and Mary, with
additional graduate work
at the University of North
Carolina and the Univer
sity of Virginia. He is
now principal of Woodrow
Wilson High School in
Portsmouth and is active
in the United Church of
Christ and in numerous
civic, professional and
fraternal groups.
J. J. Pointer, Virginia
Beach business leader,
who is now president of
the Smith-DouglassCom
pany, is also an alumnus
of Elon College. He is a
veteran of World War II
and has been active in af
fairs of the Methodist
Church and in civic life.
Dr. T. E. Powell, III,

Carolina Biological Sup
ply Company in Burling
ton, is a graduate of Vir
ginia Military Institute,
holds the M.D. degree
from the Duke Univer
sity School of Medicine
and the M. A. degree
from Harvard Univer
sity. He is a member of
the United Church ol
Christ and holds mem
bership In numerous
medical and biological
associations and he has
done much research in
areas of cellular respir
ation and fine structure
anatomy and has publish
ed articles in several
professional journals.
Thomas B. Sain, who
is executive vice-presi
dent of the Burlington
Hosiery Company, a di
vision of Burlington In
dustries and received his
management training at
the University of Virgin
ia. He is active in the
Methodist Church and in
numerous business, in
dustrial and civic groups,
having held numerous of
fices and committee ap
pointments in these or
ganizations.

November 23
An event of special in
terest on the Elon cam
pus for the fall semester
is the Alumni Seminar on
which is scheduled for
Saturday, November 23rd,
at 10:30 o’clock.
The Seminar will be
conducted by Dr. S. £-■
Gerad Priestley, who is
known worldwide as an
authority on the less de
veloped areas of the
world, a leader in he
field of international re
lations and as a histor
ian, author, lecturer and
world traveler. He is cur
rently a visiting scholar
on the Elon faculty and
is teaching courses in in
ternational relations.
