John Romano, a big Jnd rugged defensive end from Virginia feach wjo
won high honors for his defensive play as a freshman last fall,
vance this season as one of the likely standout players in Carolinas Conf^
Romano got off to a slow start in his sophomore reason but the big and hard
nosed defender has begun to hit his stride in late-seaso ® , All’Conference
be high for All-Conference honors on defense when the annual All-Conference
squads are selected.
The Newberrylndians
grabbed off six Lion fum
bles as they completely
dominated a muddy and
cold battle with the Elon
Christians last Saturday
night, winning a 24 to 15
victory before a small
crowd that braved rain
and snow to view the game
that featured Elon’s Par
ent’s weekend obser
vance.
The loss, which drop
ped Elon back to a 3-5
season mark in wins
and losses, also dropped
Elon into sixth spot in
the seven-team Carolinas
Conference race and left
Elon desperately needing
to upset the Lenoir Rhyne
Bears in the final game
of the season this Satur
day night.
For the second time
this season, the Chris
tians fumbled the two first
kickoffs deep in Elon ter
ritory, and within three
minutes the Indians of
Newberry had scored two
touchdowns. Both extra
points were missed to
leave the Indians lead
ing 12 to 0, but Elon
could never recover from
this early Newberry
surge.
A bad snap from cen
ter on a Newberry punt
ing attempt gave Elon its
first score, as a wave of
Elon linemen tackled Ro
ger Hazel in the end zone
for a safety and the 12-2
score.
Tom Jernigan had a
good return on the en
suing kickoff, and mo
ments later Burgin Beale
hit Jim Waller in the end
zone for a touchdown,with
Grover Helsley kicking
good to cut the Newberry
lead to 12-9. However,
Newberry used a pass in
terception to set a third
Indian TD which gave the
visitors an 18-9 lead at
half-time.
The Newberry gridders
hit the scoreboard again
in the third quarter, af
ter Johnny Harbin threw
seven yards to Bill Gray.
The kick was wild again.
but the Indians held a
commanding 24 to 9 edge.
Beale climaxed an Elon
drive when he plunged in
from the one for Elon’s
final score in the 24-15
loss.
The rain turned to snow
in the second half, and the
weather held both teams
to a minimum on offense.
Emery Moore ran well
for Elon, with Beale a-
gain topping 100 yards in
passing.George Taylor led
the Newberry attack.

Beale Tops Justice Records
Justice in North Caro
lina football is a thing
of the past!
Burgin Beale made
sure of that situation when
he completed 22 of 44
passes for a total of 346
yards in Elon’s 35 to 30
victory over the Western
Carolina Catamounts at
Cullowhee on Saturday
night, November 2nd, the
old “BB” — that can
stand for Burgin Beale or
Busting Bomber,”
whichever you like best—
topped all the supposedly
inimortal records of Car
olina’s Charlie Justice
With his tremendous per
formance against the Cat
amounts.
Way back in the late
‘Forties when Charlie
Justice was winning im
mortal fame as the offen
sive ace of the Carolina
Tar Heels, and when he
was winning All-Ameri
can honors three times,
the great Choo Choo ran
and passed the ball for
5,176 yards. That record
was supposed to stand
forever, and Justice was
accorded a permanent pe
destal among the heroes
of Hall of Valhalla, the
hall where the immortals
of the gridiron are en
shrined.
However, those grid
worshippers of a score
of years ago reckoned
without the rifle-armed
accuracy of Burgin Beale,
1
BURGIN BEAL
Elon’s great passer, who
defies the “red dogs”and
the "blitzes” of enemy
defenders to stick the ball
right into the paws of such
receivers as Richard Mc-
George, Jim Waller and
Joe Rinaca as they wing
their way on Mercury
heels far down field.
The 5,176 yards that
were won by the running
and passing wizardry of
ChooChoo Justice twenty
and more years ago are
strictly out of date,for
Elon’s Burgin Beale has
overcome all the red-
dogs and all the blitzes
to pass his way for a to
tal of 5,232 yards in aer
ial offense and to add
enough yards on the
ground to push his total
offense to 5,251 yards.
That last figure is exact
ly 75 yards more than
Justice could accumulate
in combined rushing and
passing for the Tar Heels,
and that is why there 13
no Justice in the list of
North Carolina gridiron
immortals today.
As Burgin Beale top
ped the all-time Justice
total offense records,and
remember that Justice
like Beale played four full
seasons, the Elon passing
ace moved his all-time
career passing yardage
to more than 1,100 yards
