Steve Helms, a 6-0 and 235-pound guard for the Elon Christians, has been one_ of the outstanding performers in the Fighting Christian line during this 1968 grid camapaign. Helms, who played his freshman ball at Clemson and then transferred to Elon for his varsity play, was a starter at guard on offense in the early season, but in the late season games he has also performed with the defensive line, one of the few Christians who has gone both ways for this 1968 team. Five Lettermen Are Nucleus For Eton’s Basketball Team nlavp Five lettermen form the nucleus around which Coach Bill Miller will build his 1968-69 Fight ing Christian cage team, but those five letter vet erans pack a lot of tal ent and could pace the Christian cagers to a fine season record in Coach Miller’s tenth season at the helm of the Elon cage machine. The five lettermen who will be back in the Ma roon and Gold uniforms this winter Bill Bowes at center, Richard McGeorge and Steve Caddell as the for wards and Tom McGee and Noble Marshall as the guards. McGeorge has been playing football all the fall season and has missed the early workouts on the hardwood, but Coach Miller has had the other four boys in the early drills and has molded his play about them. Bill Bowes, who has include lanky ^EY COACH ELON BASKETEE!^ bill MILLER Head Coach TWIG WIGGINS Assistant Coach previously played for- for Coach Miller, will move to the center spot this year to fill the post left vacant by the loss of Henry Goedeck. In the early drills he has been flanked at the for ward positions by Steve Caddell and freshman Tommy Cole. The back court spots will be well taken care of by juniors Tom McGee and Noble Marshall, both of whom have rated among the better guards in the Carolinas Conference since their freshman sea sons. These five boys, includ- Caddell and Cole as forwards, Bowes at center and McGee and Marshall at the guards, have formed the starting five for the Christians in pre - season scrimmage games against Campbell A. and T. Colleges, . Richard McGeorge expected to break into starting combo when he reports after the close of the football season. Coach Miller has a very fine crew of newcomers this fall, among them be ing Charles Hale, a 6-8 (Continued on Page 4) ing the and but is the By BILL WALKER The Elon gridders threw up their stoutest defense of the year, and Burgin Beale’s passing arm was in fine form as the Fighting Christians combined a sharp attack and stubborn holding pow er to defeat the Lenoir Rhyne Bears last Satur day night in Burlington Stadium. The Elon victory, which was only the fourth Chris tian win over the Bears since World War II,ser ved to derail Lenoir Rhyne’s championship express at least tempo rarily, and it left the Bears with the necessity of whipping Catawba on Thanksgiving Day to clinch the Conference ti tle. The Bears came into the Elon stronghold with out a loss in the Confer ence, but it took just sev en plays for Elon to drive eighty-nine yards for the first score, with Beale passes and an Emery Moore run setting the stage. Beale hit Moore with a 35-yard screen pass for the score, and Grover Helsley kicked good for 7 to 0. The Bears, however, came back and tied the score with a TD early in the second quarter when Bartles hammered in from the two. Jerry Shaw had grabbed off an Elon pass and returned to the four to set up the score. Hinkle kicked to tie the count at 7-all. The Lenoir Rhyne comeback only whetted the Elon attack to razor edge, and Beale com pleted ouf or five passes, the last being to Richard McGeorge for a second touchdown. Again Helsley made good for a 14-7 Elon lead. That lead mov ed to 20-7 when Beale needled a 23-yard scor ing pass to Jim Waller seconds before the half. The Elon fans, while whooping it up at the in termission, were still un easy in their seats for fear of a Bear comeback. However, Elon came right back after the break when Helsley booted a 35-yard field to top off the Elon scoring at 23 points. It was then that the Elon defense showed its finest form of the year as the Christian defenders fought off the desperate Bears. Jack Huss was able to complete two TD passes, one to Bryan Jack for 7 yards and the other to Fete Paddon for 13 yards, but Elon stopped other LR threats. The Bears were halt ed by a Marty Bonnett interception at the four and a Tom Jernigan inter ception at the twelve, and the rugged Elon linemen, with newfound iron in their spines, stopped the Bears’ vaunted ground power twice inside the five. Burgin Beale, with a special supporting group of youthful boys club members from home town Danville, put on a great show in his final game as he completed 20 of 33 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring tosses were shared by Moore, Mc George and Waller, all of whom played great games. Moore was over the “Century Mark” in rush ing yardage for a second straight game, and Mc George and Waller both caught for more than 100 yards during the battle. Helsley set a new record with his third field goal of the year. Among the defensive heroes in Elon’s line were ends John Romano and Sanford Reverly, and Doug Thomas, Pete Mc Daniel and Steve Helms at interior line positions. Also playing brilliantly was linebacker Lloyd Ka- nipe. The Christian defen sive backs also contri buted a number of very fine “saves” at crucial moments, with such as Dave Oliphant, Tim Jer nigan, Marty Bonnett and Danny Watson coming in for tackles that halted Bruin threats. Altogether, it proved to be a wonderful ending for an Elon campaign which had proven more or less on the “Snakebit” side through most of the au tumn season. The 23-21 win eased numerous mid season heart-aches for Elon fans. FACTS L-R 18 196 42 154 38 FIGURE Elon 17 First Downs 142 Yds. Gain Rush. 40 Yds. Lost Rush. 102 Net Yds.
