J I Independents Clinch Touch Foothall Title The Independents, paced by such stars as Wally Burke, Bob Rink- er, Richard Smith and 'fim Friesinger, turned back the Tau Kappa E-p- silon squad 35 to 27 in a playoff battle to clinch the campus tag football title for the 1968 season. The Independents had won the title in the Dormi tory League, while TKE topped the fraternity loop in regular season. In the titular playoff Wally Burke scored two TD’s, and Rinker, Smith and Friesinger each tal lied one TD to lead the In dependents to victory. Jerry Webb scored two TD’s to lead the TKE outfit. In the other play off battle for third spot the Sigma Mu Sigm a squad turned back Carolina ‘A” by a 21-7 margin. Plans are already map ped for the campus Volleyball competition, 5^th both Fraternity and *^rmitory Leagues. In the fraternity loop will be teams from Kappa FsiNu, u ^ *^^ppa Epsilon, Sigma Mu Sigma and Sigma Phi oeta. In the dormitory loop will be teams from '-arolina “A”, Smith (Continued on Page 4) Set into a scene of football action above are the five Elon College grid stars who shared in the setting of no less than thirty-eight new individual Elon football records during the 1968 season. Beale Tops Brilliant Career As Owner Of Twenty-Three All-Time Elon Marks If Burgin Beale had played his football in the days of the ancient Greeks or the rugged Norsemen, then most surely the Greeks would have en throned him high on the slopes of Mount Olym pus, and the Vikings would most surely have placed for him a statue in the Halls of Valhalla, home of the Norse immortals. Emulating the Greeks and the Norsemen, Elon- ites can do no less than to hail Beale as a Chris tian immortal, for when the big Elon tailback from Danville, Va., walked off the field after pitching Elon to its 23-21 upset of Lenoir Rhyne, he car ried with him 23 of Elon s all-time passing and to tal offense marks and a tie for another Elon foot ball record. With such an array ot records, Beale lays solid claim to the title of the greatest backfield star in more than 50 years of Elon football, but he must also be ranked among the all-time greats for col lege football in the Caro- linas Conference and for the state of North Caro lina. As he finishes his 4- year career, Beale holds more than ten of the all- time Carolinas Confer ence records, and his ca reer total of 5,633 yards in total offense for pass ing and rushing was 357 yards ahead of the 4-year total offensive yardage of 5,176 compiled by Caro lina’s great Charlie Jus tice. Beale’s career total of 5,611 yards in passing was nearly 1,500 yards ahead of the career total of 4,040 yards compiled by Wake Forest’s Nor man Snead. Snead played only three years and av eraged 1,346.7 yards per season, but Beale’s aver age per season of 1,402.8 yards is well ahead of the Snead yearly mark. During his senior sea son this fall Beale set 21 new Elon records and tied another one, and he al ready held two other marks from previous years. In fact he had held 15 records before this year, and many of the new records he set smashed his own old marks. The 21 new records Beale set were only a part of a literal orgy of record-smashing staged by the 1968 Elon College squad, for the Fighting Christians as a squad and as individuals broke 63 Elon all-time records and tied four others during a disastrous campaign that netted only four wins in nine starts. Thirty-eight of the new records and the one tied were of the individual type. Othe r Elon players who set individual marks this season included Richard McGeorge with eight new records, all in the pass catching depart ment; Ronnie O’Brien with four, all in kick re turns; Grover Helsley with three, all in place kicking ; and Emery Moore, one in number of kickoff runbacks. In addition to the many individual records, there were twelve team records set and two tied, including four new single game marks and two tied, and eight new single-season team performances. On the not-so-favor- able side of the ledger were the thirteen new all- time Elon opponent rec ords set and one tied, all of which reflected the sometimes weakness of the Christian defense. The new single game marks set by Burgin Beale this year included most passes attempted with 47 against Presbyterian, most passes completed with 22 against Western Carolina, most yards passing with 368 against Concord and most offen sive plays with 54 against Western Carolina.
