‘Special Elon Player Edition MAROON AND GOLD Non-Profit Organization U. S. POSTAGE PAID Elon College, N. C. PERMIT No. 1 Return Requested VOLUME 49 elon college. N. C. FRIDAY. JANUARY 31, 1969 NUMBER 13 Player Group To Make Tour THEY DIRECT ELON STAGE GROUP /iV PLANNING HIGH SCHOOL TOUR OffCF ShOW For Nearby High Schools The Elon Players, student dramatic group which has for many years been an important part of campus life at Hlon Col lege, will introduce something new to the col lege’s stage program next week when they take one of their stage productions on a tour of five high schools in the Burling ton and Alamance Coun ty public schools sys tems. There have been num erous instances in the past when the Elon Play ers made a special effort to attract high school groups from the area to their productions on the Elon campus, seeking thus to influence the dra ma programs in the high schools, but this 1969 tour marks the first time that the Players have actually taken their own program into the high schools. This tour, which has been planned under the direction of Prof. Sandy Moffett and Prof. Ed Pil- kington, will get under way with the Players ap pearing in Western Ala mance High School next Monday, February 3rd;in Jordan Sellars High School next Tuesday,Feb ruary 4th; in Eastern Ala mance High School next Wednesday, February 5th; in Graham High School next Thursday, February 6th; and in Sou thern Alamance High School next Friday, Feb ruary 7th. The Players will offer an up-dated version of Moliere’s “Tartuffe,” great comedy of Seven teenth Century life in France, a play which pro duced quite an upheaval when it was first produced in France in 1664. The Elon group has reset the Moliere comedy from France of three centuries ago to the Old South in America of a century ago during the presidential term of President Grant. The Moliere master piece has been prepared for its five showings in the area high schools as a part of a special Thea tre Arts Seminar with a course listing as Drama 241, which Professors Moffett and Pilkington have conducted as a spe cial course offering dur ing the current one month “Mini-Term” that is in itself a feature of Elon’s new 4-1-4 academic cal endar. (Continued on page 2) PROF.SANDY MOFFETT PROF. ED PILKINGTON Initial Showing Of Players’ Production Of "Tartuffe’ Set For Mooney Tonight There will be two cam pus showings of the new Elon Player production of Moliere’s “Tartuffe,” great comedy of Seven teenth Century society in France, with the first presentation set for Mooney Little Theatre at 8:15 o’clock tonight and the second at the same hour on Saturday night. The classic French play will be given in a modern Moliere Comedy Is In Modern Setting It will be Moliere in a modern setting when the Elon Players raise the curtain tonight on their new production of “Tar tuffe,” the great comedy of French life in the Seventeenth Century, for the campus drama group has moved the Moliere masterpiece to a new setting in the Amer ican South of a century ago. The Player portrayal °f Tartuffe” has its lo cation in the Old South Quring the presidential term of General U. S. fant, and Grant himself ^111 have a role in the P*ay as prepared for an °n Player tour of area high schools. The change of time and the change of setting does not, however, detract from the intriguing plot of the original Moliere play, which represents a classic portrayal of a hypocrite, a portrayal so real and so vivid that Moliere was accused in the l660’s of undermin ing the very basis of French religion. Tartuffe, leading char acter of the play, has worked his way into the confidence and affection of Orgon, a rich bour geoisie, who is married to Elmire, a woman (Continued on page 4) setting in the American South of the 1870’s. These two showings will give the Elon College students and faculty a pre-view of the play that the Elon Players will take on a five-day tour of area high schools next week and will at the same time give the student actors themselves a sort of final testing before taking to the road. It is a talented cast that has been assembled by Prof. Sandy Moffett and Prof, Ed Pilkington for this production, and the two Elon dramatics professors will be watch ing with interest tonight and tomorrow night to see the results of the inten sive efforts they have concentrated within a lit tie over two weeks as part of their Dramatic Arts Seminar. The two faculty lead ers and their students have worked literally day and night in preparing the Moliere show for its pre miere in Mooney Little Theatre tonight. Prof. Pilkington him self will play the title role of Tartuffe, but he will have able support from a cast that includes several veterans of pre vious Elon Player pro ductions. Dale Kaufman, who starred in earlier pro ductions this year, will have the role of Orgon. Other veteran Player ac tors having roles include Jim Gillespie as Orgon’s (Continued on page 4) special Elon Player Edition In recognition of the Elon Players and their first dramatic tour of area high schools with one of their campus stage productions, this issue of the Maroon and Gold has been prepared as a “Special Elon Player Edition,” with much of the material covering the group’s new play, its “mini-term” seminar and the beginning of a history of student dramatic activities on the Elon campus during the past half century and more.
