MORE THAN
Football season, if we
are to believe what tele
vision, newspapers and
sporting schedules tell
us, Is over for a time.
Yet, if you look at it
in proper perspective,
football can be a year-
round thing. The spunk
some guys show ten Sat
urdays a year ought not
to be dismissed just be
cause we’re slam in the
middle of basketball.
Now, there’s one Fight
ing Christian who showed
a flair for combat this
past year — one Ron O'
Brien, the Fayetteville
Irishman, who switched to
our place after a brilliant
junior college career
down in Georgia.
Consider his situation:
The first time he touch
ed the ball for Elon was
on a punt return against
Concord. He skidooed for
77 yards for a touchdown.
Pretty fair for a start.
In the Guilford game,
the stocky Irishman ran
another punt 66 yards,
setting up an Elon score.
O’Brien, despite ir
regular appearances in
the Christian starting
line-up, fritter little time
when he did get into Elon’s
games. He only broke four
punt return records dur
ing the season.
Although he was as
signed to blocking back,
he played a bit of tail
back when super-ultra-
hyper-star Burgin Beale
was hurt. I mean how
does O’Brien follow such
an act as Beale’s.
And he worked at wing-
back, as well.
Coach Red Wilson had
coached O’Brien in high
school days for both at
Fayetteville, so naturally
he thinks well of his
scrapping qualities. His
teammates like him too.
I’ll let you in on what
one teammate thought; “I
like O’Brien’s blocking.
He knows just one speed—
faster.”
So Ron O’Brien is hea
ven-sent, although his
girl friend may not think
so.
Moreover, he did have
a few devilish moments
in the Appalachian maxi
tragedy. He fumbled a
couple that proved parti
cularly damaging. One
might even say that such
antics looked like hades.
Now check me on this:
What O’Brien learned —
and also taught our more
publicized athletes during
the past football season—
lasts 365 days a year. It
cannot be gained from
any textbook in our new
library or any course of
fered in our academic
catalogue.
Only book I know of
even mentioning O’-
