Reid This
A HERO AWAITS
Should basketball coach
Bill Miller hark to the
really important things in
life such as the infalli
ble Maroon and Gold, he
might just Reid This and
discover I have the reso
lution to whatever prob
lems now courting him.
1 know where the best
recruit of all time waits
for a call from ever-so-
desirable Elon College:
Namely, at Monroe.Conn.
There dwells one Ed Mul-
ford, bucketballer of
some modesty. You can
tell this by what Mulford
shyly admits;
“The most points I ev
er made in a basketball
game was 107.”
Muley Mulford knows
Elon. He played there a
time after transferring
from Blue Ridge College
whose athletic program
immediately suffered. So
did the school. It shut
down. I don’t know if there
was a connection with
Ed’s leaving.
Anyway, 1 turn again
to the exact words of Mul
ford:
‘‘Funny thing is I didn’t
do much at all at Elo*.
I made the team, of
course, and played about
1/2 of the season. 1 was
even demoted to the 2nd
5. I figured I’d get hot
in one of the games as a
sub and the coach would
wake up.
“It almost happened in
the Davidson game. I
started that one and hit
3 straight shots. But one
boy screamed I wasn’t
passing off to him (I had
n’t missed, why the h.
should I).”
Loyalty, in case Mill
er needs that, too, stirs
lustily in Mulford’s soul.
Again recalling Ed’s gos
pel:
“I left the team be
cause my pal, #15 man on
the squad, was gypped out
of a trip to Lenoir Rhyne
and Appalachian. He was
looking forward to the trip
up into North Carolina’s
beautiful mountains. The
whole squad was listed to
go but somebody raised h.
that only 10 players
should make the trip and
that the others would only
be in the way. By my
count, I might have been
n'll, so I sacrified my
self for the good of all
and quit.”
Mulford has stayed in
shape. He is still a lead
ing pitcher in a New Eng
land softball league. Even
if Miller doesn’t snap him
up, Mulford might make
it in JackO. White’s band.
He plays drums. Mulford
always did make a lot of
noise.
Mulford, 1 reckon, is
not quite a half-a-century
old.
Don’t let that disturb
you. Miller. He has a year
of eligibility left.
Elon Downs
Appalachian

Fine defensive play
featured the Elon Chris
tians’ 67 to 65 win over
the Appalachian Moun
tain Mountaineers on the
Mountie court here on
Wednesday, February
5th, with the Maroon
and Gold cagers chalk
ing their seventh conse
cutive victory and run
ning their season mark
to 14 wins in 20 starts.
Bill Bowes and Tom
my Cole led the Chris
tian attack in early stages
of the game and carried
Elon to a 41-37 margin
at the break, and the Elon
basketeers built up that
margin to as much as 13
points at 57-44 with ele
ven minutes on the clock.
Captain Bowes got into
foul trouble at that point
and had to sit out about
eight minutes, and the
Apps took advantage of
Elon’s loss of height to
pull tight the battle. At
one late stage of the game
the Mountaineers hit
three field goals in eigh
teen seconds and almost
pulled out the victory.
During these closing
moments of the game the
Christians had hit a cold
streak in shooting, and in
fact the Elon cagers in
general had one of their
coldest nights of the year
for the entire game, hit
ting on only 35 per cent
for the night. In addition,
the Apps topped the
Christians 44 to 38 in re
bounding.
Pete Johnson came off
the bench late in the first
half and turned in a brill
iant defensive game,
holding Appalachian’s
Williams to three points,
and Johnson also topped
the Elon scoring with 15
points on three field goals

was badly hurt by grad
uation. Right now the pri
mary objective is to find
three consistent starting
pitchers, for we lost last
year’s stoppers. Bill Aus
tin and Burgin Beale.”
Such was Drake’s
statement, and he contin
ued, “If I can find three
starters, we’ll be all
right.” He admitted that
hitting was a big prob
lem with the Elon nine
last season, and his
Christians will work hard
to correct that.
“One thing I’m sure
of,” said Drake, “and
that’s the fact that we’ll
hit higher than the .196
we hit last year. We’ll
have All-Conference out
fielder Mel Cliburne re
turning, He hit .302 for
us last year, and Jim
Friesinger will also be
back and hoping to better
his .295 batting average.”
He declared that he
would have his baseball-
ers out on the field as
soon as the sun shines a
bit and as soon as the
temperature hits 50 de
grees. The Elon outfit
will begin play on March
19th at Fort Bragg.

There was a short
age of games on the Elon
Intramural scene, but
there was not shortage of
action during the first
week of February, with
much of the action in the
Fraternity League, where
Sigma Mu Sigma won its
first game of the sea
son as Bob Caviness hit
a free throw with two
seconds on the clock to
net a 51-40 win over Kap
pa Psi Nu. Dan Hudgins
had 14 points for Sigma
Mu in the win, and Wayne
Ricks was high for the
losers with 12 points.
Also in the Fraternity
League, TKE extended its
unbeaten streak to five
but were forced to ex
tend themselves to do it.
The TKE’sbeat Sigma Phi
Beta 53-49 in an over
time affair. George
Hughes had 17 points for
the victors, including four
in overtime. The score
was 45-45 at the end of
regulation.
In the Dorm B League
the Veteran’s Club romp
ed over TKE “C” 65-

lone outscored TKE as he
hit 27 points. Carolina
“B” dealt Smith “B” its
first loss of the year 48
to 38. Mike Warren led
Carolina with 12 points.
Andy Crew was high man
for Smith with 15 points.
In the Dormitory “A”
League Moffitt continued
to reign with a 58-37 win
over Carolina “A” as
Mel Pearce had 12 points
for the winners. He was
aided and abetted by Dave
Davis’ 15 points, and Will
Hartley had 10 points for
the losers.

plans for the upcoming

the school champion. “As
