fiGHTiNG CHRISTIANS CARRY STRONG TITLE HOPES INTO CONFERENCE TOURNEY
22
Va
The Fighting Christian cagers, who travel to Guilford tomorrow night for their final game of the regular season, will carry strong title
hopes into the annual Carolinas Conference tournament, which gets underway in Winston-Salem on Wednesday of next week and will con
tinue for four nights up to the finals on Saturday night,March 1st. The Christians have developed rapidly since Christmas this year and in
recent weeks have proven themselves to be one of the finest teams to wear the Elon colors. The Christian cagers pictured left to right a-
bove are as follows: KNEELING IN FRONT ROW — Tom McGee, Deer Park, N. Y.; Pete Johnson, Brooklyn, N. Y.; Noble Marshall,Roan
oke, Va.; and Tommy Cole, Burlington, BACK ROW ~ Bill Wallace, Huntington, West Va.; Richard McGeorge, Roanoke, Va.; Henry Goe-
deck, Central Isiip, N. Y.; Captain Bill Bowes, Lenox, Mass.; Pat Berry, Norfolk, Va.; Steve Caddell, Rocky Mount; and Robby Hicklin,

CAGE GAMES
With Henry Goedeck
nearing the end of a
brilliant four-year ca
reer in an Elon basket
ball uniform, the big sen
ior forward from Central
Islip, N.Y., is already
assured of at least one
all-time career record,
and he appeared last week
to be virtually sure of
setting , another career
mark before he graduates.
Figures compiled last
week while the Christian
cagers still had at least
four more games to play,
showed that Goedeck had
already passed the all-
time Elon record for most
field goals attempted,for
he had tried 1,564 shots
during his four seasons
and had connected on 767
of them for a 49.1 per
centage.
Goedeck's 1,550 field
goal attempts had already
topped the previous Elon
record of 1,517 field goal
tries by Jesse Branson
during his four seasons
of play, and indications
were that Goedeck would
also top Branson’s all-
time mark for most field
goals made. The Branson
record was 774 baskets,
so Goedeck needed to hit
only eight more goals this
season to nab that all-
time mark.
His 49.1 shooting per
centage from the floor is
close to the career mark
of 49.9 per cent set by
Dee Atkinson during his
four seasons of play, so
Goedeck is not complete
ly out of reach of that
mark. Richard Mc
George who was hitting at
at a 59.6 per cent pace
after 22 games this year
seems virtually sure to
claim a new seasonal rec
ord, for he is well ahead
of Dee Atkinson's sea
son mark of 57.5 per cent
set in 1957.
Christians Top Falcons 82-70
The Fighting Christian
cagers were hitting well
from both floor and free
throw line as they turn
ed back the Pfeiffer Fal
cons 82 to 70 on the
Pfeiffer Floor on Febru-
^fy 12th, chalking Elon’s
ninth consecutive vic
tory and maintaining the
, Ion grip on second spot
in the Conference stand
ings.
The victory over Pfeif
fer enabled this 1969
.nristian cage combo to
tie the second longest win
streak in Elon basketball
history, matching the nine
straight wins by
the Elon quintet of 195/,
a cage combo that won
NAIA District 26 laurels
and went on the national
NAIA tourney.
The Christians moved
out to 36-32 lead the
first half, which showed
the Pfeiffer squad fighting
S'th and nail for
point, but
George, Henry Goedeck
and Bill Bowes led Elon
to a 62-48 edge after
the break and finally led
by 71-51 at one time in
the last half.

The Fighting Christian
cagers moved to a quick
lead and went on to chalk
a 65 to 54 victory over
the Presbyterian Blue
Stockings in a Carolinas
Conference cage battle on
the Elon floor on Satur
day night, February 9th.
The Christians were off
to a fast start in the bat
tle and moved to a 7-0
lead in the first three
minutes,but the Blue
Hose rallied to tie the
count and kept the score
close through most of the
first half, although Elon
grabbed a 39 to 34 as the
half came to an end.
The visitors from South
Carolina stuck to a tightly
knit zone defense through
the early portion of the
second half, and with eight
minutes left in the game
the Blue Hose were trail
ing by only two points
with a 54 to 52 count.
At that point, however,
the Christians hit three
quick baskets and moved
to a 61-52 margin. It was
all easy sailing for the
Elon cagers from that
time until the final whis
tle.
Captain Bill Bowes and
Richard McGeorge were
the pace setters for the
Christians all the way and
were the only Christians
who managed double-digit
scoring for the night.
