from Burlington, is the
new “Miss Burlington”
for 1970, and will reign
as queen of the city dur
ing the coming 1970 term.
Miss Walker, who is a
19-year-old green-eyed
brunette, won the Miss
Burlington crown in the
annual ceremonies held
at Walter Williams High
School auditorium on Sat
urday night, March 29th,
topping a field of ten very
attractive contestants in
a program sponsored by
the Burlington Jaycees.
The chairman of the
program, which proved to
be one of the most en
tertaining in the history of
the local beauty pageants,
was staged under the di
rection of C.V.May, who
was president of the Elon
College Student Govern
ment Association two
years ago.
The new Miss Burling
ton is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Raleigh
Walker, of Burlington,and

Whitley
One of the greatest or

day will appear on the
Elon College campus next
Sunday afternoon when Si
mon Preston, organist at
Westminster Abbey in
England, who is recogniz
ed worldwide as a recital
ist and recording artist
will appear in the next of
the Elon College Lyceum
programs in Whitley Au
ditorium at 4 o’clock.
Making his first ap
pearance in this part of
the world, Simon Preston
will present in recital
many of the organ num
bers which have gained
for him worldwide ac
claim as an organist. Mu
sic critics all over the
world have hailed Pres
ton for his magnificent
technique and his fine
sense of rhythm.
Simon Preston was
born in Bournemouth,
England, in 1938 and went
to Choir School of King’s
College, Cambridge,
where he was chorister
under Boris Ord.
He then went to Canford
School and later to he
Royal Academy of Mu
sic where he studied the
organ with C. H. Trevor.
In 1958, he was awarded
the Dr. Mann Organ Stu
dentship at King s Col
lege, Cambridge, where
where he returned to work
under David Willcocks,
and where he obtained
both the M.A. and the
Mus. B. degrees.
As a sub-organist at
Westminster Abbey until
just recently, he had
established himself as
one of the most brilliant
of the younger generation
of organists. He has given
recitals throughout the
British Isles, and in 1965
made his first tour of the
United States and Canada,
winning great acclaim in
both countries.
During the season of
1967-68, he substituted
as Master of Music at the
Cathedral and Abbey
Church of St. Alban. In
addition to having six solo
long-play records to his
credit, he has recently
finished making a film on
organ in the series en
titled “We Make Music.”
Simon Preston’s inter
ests are not solely con
fined to the organ, for
he is well known on tele
vision in England as the
conductor of the “New
English Singers” and
has a growing reputa
tion as a harpsichord
player. A number of com
positions also testify to
his ability as a composer.

praise from newspaper
