The Cats finally scored in the fourth on hits by Bill Wofford and Steve Barkley, and two more runs crossed the plate in the sixth off reliefer Keith Brewer. Newcombe and tne By JIM HODGES Lefthander Joe Byrtus teased and tantalized vi siting Otterbein College with a slow, slower and slowest curve ball and held them to but one hit as the Christians came through with a 3-0 win on the Elon field on Friday, March 28th. Byrtus personally out- hit the Cardinals, collect ing two of Elon’s nine safeties and batting in one of the runs, with his combined pitching and hitting making him easily the top man of the day. The Christians scored first in the fourth inning on a bizarre turn of events. Jim Friesinger and Bob Godfrey led off the inning with singles. Then H. J. Newcombe slapped one out to third, with the third baseman flipping to second to force Godfrey, and a throw to the plate nipped Friesin ger trying to score. It appeared that Elon’s rally was stopped, but then Rick Smith walked, and there were runner s on first and second. Dony Brady hit a drive to left center, scoring New combe and Smith, but on an appeal, the um pire ruled that New combe had not touched third as he rounded it, and only Smith’s run counted, Elon later scor ed in the seventh and eighth on more convention al plays.
