The coaches who are directing three of Elon’s spring sports squads are pic
tured above. Shown left to right, the Christian mentors are Coach Jerry Tolley,
who is directing the Elon track squad for the third straight season; Coach Gary
Mattocks, who is leading the Maroon and Gold golf team, also repeating duties
he has held in previous seasons; and Coach Twig Wiggins, who took over the
leadership of the Christian tennis team for the first time this season.
Linksmen Even In Early Play
The Elon College golf
squad broke even in four
matches played prior to
the annual Easter vaca
tion, chalking victories
over Newberry and Pfeif
fer and dropping de
cisions to Catawba and
Campbell.
The Christian linksmen
split a triangular affair
with Catawba and New
berry to open the cam
paign, defeating New
berry easily by a 22 1/2
to 1 1/2 margin while los
ing to the Catawba outfit
by an 18 to 6 margin.
The loss to Campbell
was in a closely fought
affair played over the Ar
rowhead course at Me-
bane, with the Camels
ekeing a 13 to 11 decision,
and then the Christians
travelled to Pfeiffer to
win an 18 to 6 decision
over the Falcons in the
final pre-holiday engage
ment.
The Christians were
scheduled to resume play
yesterday at High Point,
but the score was not a-
vailable at press time.
Coach Mattocks and his
boys will swing into heavy
action by meeting Pfeif
fer, Catawba, Appala
chian, Guilford and At
lantic Christian all next
week.
