PAGE 4 MAROON AND GOLD FRIDAY, MAY 9,1969 Reid This COLLEGE-COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA GIVES CONCERT MONDAY NIGHT A BYRD FLIES The first time I heard of Luther Byrd was when he talked me into writing a column for the Maroon and Gold. It was about the kind of music we enjoyed when we were at Elon. As I recall, it wasn’t a bad column, considering I’d written it. All about ro mance. And stuff such as that. And the tunes in cluded “Stardust,” “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You” (the first time around), “In the Mood,” “Summit Ridge Drive,” “One O’ clock Jump,” “Two O’ clock Jump (how’s that for a sequel?), “There Goes That Song Again,” “Song Of India” (in legit imate, honest-to-good- ness authentic swing and not by that shady defini tion of this age) and so on. Right now, I guess I’m singing the blues. I’ve just learned that Luther Byrd will relin quish his association with the Maroon and Gold next year. I suppose I knew there’d be a final Luther Byrd edition, but when it gets near, I tend to weep in my ink. Luther Byrd, by simply being Luther Byrd, has won a lot of friends for our little old schoolhouse. How? Cramming that into one column here is, of course, impossible. Here’s a starter, anyway: Luther has been a good editor. He respected a writer’s thoughtline. He made changes only when they corrected mistakes. He knew a good story, too, and if you did well with it, he’d let you know, which few editors do. He and I argued about proofs. I think he abided by the leave - well - enough- alone theory: that if you fiddle with too many cor rections, you’re liable to end up with more mis takes. As a person, Luther would always feed me and house me and my clodhopper friends as well. He was entertain ing as all git out, espe cially in recounting Elon football games. I guess, all thinp considered, he didn t turn out too badly for a Chapel Hill graduate. He really should have gone to Elon. I keep using past tense. I’m wrong there. Luther Byrd will be back at Elon this fall. It’s just that he will be teaching in stead of editing. The new Maroon and Gold faculty advisor will have to come on strong. Last Maroon and Gold editor, you know, really was a Byrd.... \ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■I 5 BASEBALL S Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon Elon 1, Elon 7, Elon 6, Elon 1, Elon 2, Elon 1, Elon 1, Elon 5, Elon 2, Elon 5, Elon 1, Elon 3, SCHEDULE - Methodist (Rain). 5, Campbell 6. 2, W. PFEIFFER WIN (Continued from page 3) gave his first route- going performance of the year against the visitors, allowing but six hits along the wa^ and striking out five. ‘Jerky” stranded an even dozen base run ners. Jernigan ran into tou- ble in both the sixth and seventh innings, with the bases loaded on both oc casions, but the sopho more southpaw pitched his way out of both traps to chalk his third win of the season. The off-again,on-again Christian baseballers contined their erratic play as they split a dou ble-header with the Lenoir Rhyne Bears at Hickory on Friday, April 25th, winning the first game by a 5 to 1 count and then droppin g the nightcap by a 10 to 2 margin. The Christians were "on” as they grabbed the 5 to 1 triumph in the opener on the Bears’ home field, with the Elon batters coming alive for a big 5-run assault in the sixth inning of the opener, and the five runs were enough to eive Dewey Capps a win over the Bears. It was Elon’s “off- again”game that came up in the second tilt, with the Bears slugging out thirteen hits against three Elon pitchers to plate ten runs in four innings and grab the victory. Keith Brewer, Jim Ramsey and Donnie Oakes divided the mound duties for the Christians in this tilt, with Brewer taking the loss. Ron Brown and Dewey Capps hit twice for Elon in the first game, but no Christian could hit twice in the second tilt. The Elon College-Community Orchestra, which will present its annual spring concert in Whitley Auditorium at 8 o’clock next Monday night, is pictured above in a rehearsal session. Dr. Malvin N. Artley, one of the founders of the orches tra in 1963, is shown on the podium as he directs the rehearsal. In the center, almost directly facing Dr. Artley, is Dean W. Jennings Berry with his violin. AC Bulldogs Defeat Elon The Fighting Christian baseballers suffered their fourth 1-run loss of this 1969 season as they dropped a 4 to 3 deci sion to the Atlantic Chris tian Bulldogs in a thir teen-inning thriller play ed at Wilson on April 20th. The Christians moved ahead when Bob Godfrey blasted a 2-run homer in the seventh, but the Bull dogs evened the count in the bottom of that same rack on two hits, two walks and two Elon er rors. It remained 2-2 until the eleventh when Elon squeezed Mike Spillane home with a counter in the top of the inning, but again the Bulldogs tied it up at 3-all on a passed ball play. Then came the unlucky thirteenth for the Chris tians, with the Bulldogs using an error, a sacri fice, infield out and sin gle to get the winning run.
