NINE ELON STARS ARE LISTED IN BOOK ON AMERICAN ATHLETES
HAPPY CHANGE
Whatever flaws t.ion
may have, one cannot pos
sibly be a failure to cater
to the homeless.
Across the road from
the campus the Elon Chil
dren’s Home remains as
one of the truly worthy
endeavors in all of Ala
mance County. On the
college cam pus,a number
of academic orphans from
defunct Frederick Col
lege found adoption at
Elon less than the bitter
pill they had expected.
Consider the case of
one transplatned Virgin
ian, Chris Butcher, po-
litcal science major, red-
thatched, son of Mrs.
James C. Allen, of Nor
folk, Sigma Mu Sigma fra
ternity member and
BUTCHER
sophomore in right good
standing.
Butcher, identical to
others at Frederick who
nurtured the fiercest
school pride outside of
VMI, joined others in
complaining about the
school’s closure. But
cher, ahem, figured his
career had been butcher
ed. He,looked around at
several other colleges
before selecting Elon.
One thing, he belonged
to the church that foots
some of Elon’s bills. An
other, his cousin, Eileen
Rash Vaught, went to Elon
in the mid-Fifties. Sigma
Mu built ramps for wheel
chair- confined Eileen to
roll into classes. Chris
could hardly overlook that
in choosing Elon.
So, how have things
been going in his new sur
roundings?
Well, he represented
Elon at a political science
seminar over at Chapel
Hill. He was one of a
dozen to make it.
1 think the positive
proof of how Chris But
cher had adapted to Elon
hides in a negative circum
stance: He never comes
home on weekends.
There’s too much that he
enjoys going on around his
foster college.

Newcombe Leads Elon Hitting
The Fighting Christian
baseball squad bettered
its last year’s won-lost
mark with an 11-14 over
all record, but the 1969
outfit dropped in its Con
ference record with a 6-
10 mark against loop
foes.
H. J. Newcombe, a reg
ular at third base most of
the year, topped the indi
vidual hitting with a .286
average on 18 hits in 63
trips. He was trailed in
order by Mel Cliborne
with .279, Joe Rinaca with
.277, Joe Byrtuswith.250
and Jerry Midkiff with
.231 averages. The Elon
squad batted .223 for the
year.
Tops in number of base
hits were Rinaca wi± 26,
Cliborne with 24andMld-
kiff with 20 safeties. New
combe was tops in RBI’s
with nine, trailed closely
by Cliborne, Rinaca and
Midkiff with 8 apiece.
Joe Rinaca led in hom
ers with 2, with Godfrey,
Cliborne and Friesinger
each hitting for the cir
cuit once. Newcombe,
Cliborne and Godfrey
each has one triple,while
Midkiff and Rinaca and
Cliborne led in doubles
with 4. Rinaca was tops
in stolen bases with 14
thefts.
Dewey Capps was the
workhorse pitcher, work
ing in 68 2/3 innings and
compiling an ERA mark
of 1.70 for the year, for
he allowed only 13 earned
runs. Southpaw Tom Jer
nigan was almost as ef
fective as he posted a
1.98 ERA markon7earn
ed runs in 31 2/3 innings.
Jim Ramsey, with a 2.08
ERA and Keith Brewer
with a 2.50 ERA were
other high rated hurlers.
Bill Bowes Drafted
For Pro Cage Play
Bill Bowes, who cap
tained the Fighting Chris
tian basketeers during the
past season and who rank-
men in the Carolinas Con
ference, will get his
chance to play pro
fessional basketball in ei
ther the National Basket
ball Associauon or the
American Basketball As
sociation.
The 6-8 Christian star
from Lenox, Mass., was
drafted by both the Oak
land Oaks of the ABA and
by the Cincinnati Royals
of the NBA circuit, but at
lasi report me lanky
Elon boy had not decided
which chance he would
take. Contract negotia
tions will determine that.
One factor in Bowe’s
final decision may lie m
the fact that Doug Moe,
former Carolina star and
former assistant cage
coach here at Elon, is a
star performer with the
Oakland Oaks.
Bowes wound up his
four-year cage career
this past season by scor
ing 363 points and aver
aging 12.9 rebounds per
game. This year’s play
enabled Bowes to be
come a member of the
nine great cagers who be
long to Elon’s “One Thou
sand Club,” those who
scored more than 1,000
points during their ca
reer. Bowes wound up
with a total of 1,145
points.
