PAGE 4 MAROON AND GOLD THURSDAY. MAY 22. 19Bg Reid This J Twenty-One Will Receive Secretarial Certificates McGEOR GE TO CAPTAIN GRIDDERS SUR PR ISE! What religious educa tion major Joan Rlggan may have been thinking was a little removed from that which is considered Christian. “Look,” the junior from Macon, N.C., told her good friend Joan An derson, a pretty young lady who won the first Ella Brunk Smith Schol arship award. "Here’s a letter from Dr. Danieley. He wants mo to be a marshal at graduating exercises For sympathy and un derstanding, all Joan Rig- gan found was an “umm- hmm” for her friend al ready had figured out why all the big deal about stay- AWARD WINNER ing over for marshal duty at that 1968 commence ment program last spring. “Well,” said JoanRig- gan, “I’ll just go to Dr. Danieley and see about this.” Curiously, Mary Thom as over there at Dr. Dan- ieley’s office behaved the same way that Joan An derson had. “1 think you should stay since Dr. Danieley has asked you to,” said Mrs. Thomas. So, Joan appealed her case to the highest court, her family. When she called home, there was this round-a- round routing also. “We’d hoped to come for you on the last day of exams,” her mother said, “But now we find we can’t make it until Mon day.” That, Joan knew, was commencement. “Besides,” her mother said, “we’d like to hear the choir sing during the ceremonies.” By this time, JoanRig- gan was assured every body was crazy. Stay, she did. Marshal, she was. Sing in the choir, she did, too. After the singers finished their bit, Joan Anderson, in her most contrived and off hand manner, said, “Let’s go sit In the bal cony.” ‘ And now,” said Dr. Danieley, “the winner of the sccond annual Ella Brunk Smith Award is...” GIVES RECITAL Linda Sonovick, senior music major who lives here in Elon College, was presented by ths college music department in her senior recital in Whitley Auditorium at 8 o'clock last Saturday night. She won praise from an appreciative audience for her program, which in cluded piano selections from Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, De bussy and Bartok. She has taught at Alexander Wilson School this spring. Track Records (Continued from page 3) ton in Guilford-Campbell meet in 1969. Four letter winners in tennis were Melvin Pearce, Winston-Salem; Dave Tyre, Fayetteville; Bryan Wall, Mebane; and John Walton, Burlington. Joan Anderson tried not to smile prematurely, “ . ... Joan Riggan.” The young lady began at that moment to get some instant answers. —Now, she knew why everybody had insisted she stay on campus for the finals ~ so she could be surprised when she won. “You!” she said to her buddy-pal Joan Anderson. “You knew all along. I’ll see you later.” And as Joan Riggan left the balcony for Dr. Dan- ieley’s podium to receive her study grant, she cried. Joan Anderson under stood. She’d turned loose a few happy tears the previous year — and for the very same reason.
