The Elon Fighting
Christians, after three
straight home games, hit
the road again this Sat
urday as they travel to
Jefferson City, Tenn., to
take on the Carson-New-
man Eagles. The game.
Homecoming for the
Eagles, will be played at
2:30 p.m. in the Eagles'
Burke Tarr Stadium.
Coach Richie Gaskell’s
Eagles are off to another
fine start this year as they
have compiled a record of
two wins, one loss, and one
tie thus far.
The Eagles will field a
largely veteran team
against the Christians as
they have a host of re
turning lettermen. The
potent Eagle offense is
led by such veterans as
end Tom Jones, fullback
Ton Wampler, guard Jim
Chambers, and center
Daffin Anderson.
The hard hitting Eagle
defense also has several
top notch veterans re
turning in the presence of
defensive backs Bubba
May and Larry Lay, mid
dle guard Buzzy Stokes,
and linebacker Bill Wil
son.
The Christians, who
have lost to the Eagles
for the past two years,
will be out to avenge
these defeats in a big
way. There is nothing the
Christians would rather
do than to spoil the Eagles
Homecoming.

George Robbins III, a
rising junior was killed
July 5, 1969 in an auto
mobile accident. A trans
fer from Frederick Coll
ege, he was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Rob
bins Jr. of Hague, Va.
Information concerning
the accident was unavail
able.

Coach Is
Elon Grad

The Elon College
coaching staff has a new
face this year. Coach
Clayton Johnson is as
suming duties as back-
field coach for the Fight
ing Christians, and is well
qualified to assume the
responsibilities.
Coach Johnson was
graduated from Elon Col
lege in 1965 with a de
gree in Physical Educa
tion. He played half-back
for four years of var
sity football and also was
on the track team. Be
sides being the backfield
coach. Coach Johnson
teaches in the physical
education department,
mainly health and com
munity hygiene.
According to Coach
Johnson, the brand of
football has not chang
ed much since he played in
college, with only minor
changes in the official
rules of the game. In a
comparison of players a-
bility of previous years
and today’s. Coach John
son stated, “Players of
previous year’s were
somewhat larger and
meaner, since stress was
placed on the running
game more than in mod
em football. Modern day
football players seem to
be faster and stress is
placed more on the pass
ing game.”
In talking about how it
feels coming back to his
alma mater to coach.
Coach Johnson replied,
“there is some pressure
but not enough to make
you uncomfortable, and I
am happy to be a member
of a real fine coaching
staff. The boys are very
friendly and there should
be no problems.”
Asked about the foot
ball team in general.
Coach Johnson said, “we
have a fine group of boys
who work very hard, and
if everything falls into
place, we should have a
real fine ballclub.”
