New Teams On Grid Schedule Elon College opens its 1970 football schedule next September with Wof ford College, one of two new additions to the sche dule. The other new addi tions to the schedule will be Jacksonville State Un iversity in Alabama. Last year Jacksonville State was ranked as one of the top powerhouses in the country among the small colleges. Concord Col lege was dropped from the schedule this year be cause the two-year con tract between Elon and Concord has expired. Coach Mickey Brown described the coming season as “tough”. If spring practice is any in dication of what the fall will be, Elon will be tough also. Offensive Coach Clayton Johnson thinks his offense is shaping up real well. In last Sat urday’s scrimmage, the defense as well as the offense looked real well. Elon loses 15 seniors this year along with All- American Richard Mc- George, but due to the fine recruiting of head Coach Red Wilson, Elon is look ing forward to another repeat of the 1969 Con ference Championship. 1970 Schedule Sept. 12 Sept. 19 Sept. 26 Oct. 3 Oct. 10 Oct. 17 Oct. 24 Oct. 31 Nov. 7 Nov. 14 Nov. 21 * Home OPPONENT Wofford Jacksonville St. Guilford Appalachian Presbyterian * Carson-New. * Catawba W, Carolina * Newberry * Lenoir-Rhyne Gardner- Webb Games Wrestlers ’ Tourney Set for March 20 The North Carolina A. A. U. wrestling tourna ment will be held on March 20-21 at Appala chian State University. All colleges and univer sities in North Carolina are eligible to partici pate. Elon will be repre sented by David Burke, Ed Quinlivan (both are Dis trict 26 champions), Wes Freshwater, and Wally Burke. This will be the first time Elon has par ticipated in this tourna ment. Three Elon wrestlers qualified for the Nation al tournament in Super ior, Wisconsin. Academ ic probation kept Ed Quin livan and Ken Strickler from making the trip. Da vid Burke was the lone representative eligible to wrestle in the Nation als. The National tour nament would have been a first for Elon wrest ling, but because of an administrative decision, the trip has been cancell ed. Wrestlers have been compensated somewhat by the assurance, from college officials, that the trip will be made in fu ture years. Lose 6-5 to Southwood Defeat A&T Univ. 2-1 By RICHARD YOUMANS The Elon baseball team has a 1-1 pre-season rec ord, and the pieces lo Coach Drake’s jigsaw puzzle are finally start ing to fit into place. Elon lost to Southwood College on March 6, 6-5; but bounced back to defeat A. & T. Univ. with a thrill ing 2-1 win. The Elonhurlers were the big guns in both games. In the Southwood game, Elon pitchers held their opponents hitless for the first six inn ings, while striking out 10 and allowing free passes to eight South wood players. Elon opened the scoring in the game with a run in the second inning and Southwood put two runs on the scoreboard in the seventh. But Elon boun ced back and rallied for four runs in the eighth inning. With one out, Joe Rinaca singled to right and Jimmy Freisinger executed the hit and run perfectly, moving Rinaca to third. With runners on first and third, Freising er then stole second, and J. Simpson, Elon fresh man outfielder, smashed a homerun, scoring Rina ca and Freisinger in front of him. Then, Donnie Bra dy drew a free ride to first, stole second and advanced to third on a Southwood error. J. Hou- rigan reached base on a fielder’s choice play. With runners on first and third and two out,Drake put the double steal on and Brady scored from third. The Elon rally proved to be of little significance, since Southwood combin ed four walks, two hits and an error by Elon’s Curly Hazley to win. In the second pre-sea son game, Elon pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth and defeated A&T Univ. by the score of 2-1. Once again the Elon pitchers, especially Jim Ramsey, led the Chris tians. Ramsey pitched the eighth and ninth innings, threw a total of 24 pitches (21 strikes), and struck out four Aggies. The Elon pitchers dom inated the game; yielding no hits for the first five innings. Elon was also held hitless until the eighth inning, but the rea son for this can be well summed up by what Coach Drake said. “Our bat ters hit ‘shots’ all day long and the only reason that they just did not fall was because the A&T outfielders were playing extremely deep.” Ron Brown started the Elon rally by getting the first Elon base hit and went to second when the Aggies’ pitcher balked. Jim Morris also followed with a basehit and Rich ard Smith scored Brown from third on a deep fly ball. Rinaca pulled off the hit and run and Morris scooted to third base. Jimmy Freisinger got an infield single that loaded the bases; and Bobby Godfrey lined out to the center - fielder, scoring Morris from third with the winning run. A&T threatened in the ninth, with runners on first and third, after two Elon errors, but Jim Ramsey, Elon pitcher, put out the fire. Asked about the per formance of Elon pit chers, and the outlook for the upcoming season, Drake stated, “This is the best pitching since I’ve been coach here at Elon, and the hitting is coming around. If we can keep up the pitching and hitting, we should have a real fine ballclub this year.” Elon 0100000405 S’ Wood 0000002046 WP-Tucker LP-Jernigan A&T 0 0 0 0 10 0 0 1 Elon 0000002x2 WP-Ramsey LP-Middleton Spring Sports Schedule GOLF March 24 * Catawba April 6 Guilford April 7 Campbell April 8 *High Point and Greensboro Col.
