College All-Stars Features 'Scott's Traveling Circus' By Wally Burke Charlie Scott and other area all-stars played at the Elon College gymnas ium Monday, April 13. The participants, quickly becoming known as the Charlie Scott traveling circus, were minus two major attractions. Van Williford of N. C. State and Mike Maloy of David son did not make an ap pearance. Scott was paired with four second stringers, while the rest of the top ' names made up the oppo sition. Scott was out standing, but his team was destroyed 132-95. His opposition, the Black team, was headed by Jer- P/ Kroll of Davidson, Dickie Walker of Wake Forest, Butch Zatagelo and Richie Mahaffey of Clemson and Bobby Cre- mins of South Carolina, High man for the game was Dickie Walker with 35 points, mostly on the short jump shot. Butch Zatazelo was the crowd- pleaser for the Black team. He scored 24 points, mostly on driving lay-ups and had several fine passes. Jerry Kroll added 26 points and scor ed 18 points in the second half, Cremins played sparingly, but his de fense bothered Scott greatly in the first half. Of course the real star was Charlie Scott. The match was played on Campbell s home course and Elon found their opponents ex tremely tough. This was the first loss of the sea son for the Elon golf team. A new winning streak was immediately install ed. Elon golfers re bounded with two wins, in a triangular meet, over Greensboro College and High Point College. Elon played well and the scores are indicative of their performance. The Christians beat High Point 19 1/2 - 4 1/2, crushed Greensboro 2. • Elon Defeats Quakers 10-6; Godfrey, Rinaca, Smith Star Elon defeated Guilford College, last Saturday, by the score of 10-6, be hind good pitching from Gary Brown and the hit ting of Bob Godfrey. The win made Elon’s overall record 7-4 and 3-3 in the Carolina’s Con ference. Elon started the scor ing attack in the first inning. Curly Hazelette led off with a walk, and went to second on a force play. Mike Stewart, Guil ford’s starting pitcher then threw a wild pitch, Hazelette scoring on the play. Bob Godfrey opened the second inning with a basehit and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice play. Gary Brown lined a basehit, scoring Godfrey from second. Jim Morris went in to run for Brown, on the “speed up” rule and stole second base. Ron Brown reached first on an error, and Morris raced to third. Elon went down in defeat 94 1/2 to 34 1/2; Catawba is recognized as one of the strongest track teams in the conference this year. Elon lost its second track meet of the season in Wilson against the Bullodgs of Atlantic Christian College. Atlan tic Christian won the meet on April 10 by a score of 67 to 42. Coach Clayton Johnson seemed to think that Elon’s greatest problem was that many of the boys were not in good enough physical shape because of the lack of conditioning. Coach Johnson said be cause of the length of spring football practice he had not been able to hold but two organized practice sessions. He stated that the team lack ed depth in his squad but he is very optimistic a- bout the remainder of the season. Statistics were not a- vailable on the first two meets at time of publica tion. Dave Goodman, playing his first match of the year, was the medalist. The Elon junior has just joined the team since the end of spring football practice. third inning. Morris pinched ran for Brown once again, and was caught in an intentional rundown between second and first. While the Guilford infielders were throwing the ball around, Cliborne raced home from third. Guilford scored a solo run in the fourth inning, and Elon pushed runs a- cross the plate in both the fourth and sixth inn ing, making the score8-3. The Quakers scored two runs in the seventh inning. Jeff Clark reach ed first on an Elon er ror and went to second on a wild pitch by Gary Brown. Jay Terrell then smashed a triple and Clark scored from sec ond. Terrell also scored on a ^ound ball to sec ond. Elon bounced back for two runs in their half of the seventh. Jim Hou rigan walked and went to third on a basehit by God frey. Mel Cliborne flew out to center and Houri gan scored from third, Godfrey moving over to third. Rick Smith walked and Gary Brown reached base on a fielder’s choice play, enabling Godfrey to score from second. Guilford scored their last run in the ninth inning. With two outs. Brown walked Terrell and hit Bill Pace, mov ing Terrell over to sec ond. Larry Funkhouser reached first when Gary Brown made an error. Drake came to the mound and decided to bring in Dewey Capps to get the all important final out. Capps walked the first batter he faced, allowing the runner from third to score. Capps then struck out the next batter for the game ending out. Futrell combined a good fastball along with a sharp breaking curve to strike out 10 batters and allow only two walks. Elon scored two runs in the first inning and an other two runs in the sec ond. Methodist scored their first run in the third inning, when Ron Roberts, Methodist center-field- er, hit a homerun over the left centerfield fence, making the score 4-1. Methodist came back for two runs in the top of the fourth inning.Flet cher Poulk reached first on an Elon error and went to second when Terry Jeffries walked on a 3-2 count. Hal Chambers reached first on a field er’s choice play, forcing Poulk at third. Pete Pee bles reached first on an other Elon error, enab ling Jeffries to score from second. Methodist pitcher, A1 Pierce, grounded out to the second baseman, and Hal Cham bers scored on the play. But the Christians rall ied for four big runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ron Brown open ed the inning with a dou ble and scored on a basehit by Curley Hazel ette. With one out, Jim Friesinger smashed a double, scoring Hazel ette from second. Frie singer also scored on a double by Jim Hourigan. With two outs and the count 0-2 on Mel Cli borne, Cliborne hit the next pitch for a basehit, Hourigan scored from second. Curly Hazelette led the Elon hitting attack with three basehits, Jim Ar rington and Jim Houri gan had two hits each. Brown, Friesinger, and Hourigan had doubles for Elon, and the only other extra-base hit in the game was Ron Roberts’ home- run.
