Capps 3 Hitter Beats LR 4-1 Dewey Capps, Elon’s top righthander, led the Christians once again on to victory over Len- oir-Rhyne, 4-1, while the Elon batters pounded out nine basehits. Elon opened the scor ing in the top of the first inning, by scoring two runs off the “Bears” pitcher , Lanny Stewart. Ron Brown singled and scored on a triple by Joe Rinaca. Jim Friesinger also hit safely, allowing Rinaca to score from third. Capps, once again, turned in a superb pitch ing performance. He on ly allowed three hits and the first hit against him did not come until the six th inning. Dewey struck out six batters and al lowed four batters to reach first on walks. Elon scored two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Ron Brown once again reached base on a basehit, and Joe Rin aca hit his second tri ple of the afternoon,scor- ing Brown from first . Jimmy Friesinger flew out to leftfield and was credited with an RBI,when Rinaca scored on the play. Lenoir - Rhyne scored its only run in the bot tom of the eighth inning. Barry Laney reached base on an Elon error, and went to second when Mike Porter walked. John Hen- kle singled and Laney scored on the play. Ron Brown, Joe Rina ca, and Bob Godfrey each had two hits for Elon, while Brown, Rinaca, and Godfrey each had two RBI’s for the Christians. Elon Wins 8-3 Against Pfeiffer Donnie Oakes beat Pfeiffer last week at Misenheimer, 8-3, while receiving good hitting support from Jim Frie singer and Jim Hourigan. Pfeiffer scored first the bottom of the first but the Fighting Christians jumped on Pfeiffer’s pitcher, Steve pude, for six big runs in the top of the second •nning. Mel Cliborne staned the inning off t>y drawing a free p>ass snd stealing second, 'fim Hourigan also walk ed and Rick Smith reach ed first on an error. Don Oakes then went to first a fielder’s choice, all runners were safe on the play. Curly Hazellete and Ron Brown followed with successive singles. Friesinger hit a sacri fice fly, driving in a run, and Cliborne drew his second walk of the inn ing. In that inning, Won had four walks, two hits, two stolen bases, and the “Falcons” committed three errors. Jim Friesinger and Jim Hourigan led the Elon batters with two hits each, and Ron Bro^had two RBI’s for the Chris tians. Gary Bartlett was the only Pfeiffer batter to get more than one hit and Ken Rhyne had two RBl s for the Falcons. Elon Downs Bears 13-0 By Richard Youmans Terry Williams, Joe Rinaca, Mel Cliborne,Jay Simpson, and pitcher, Gerald Campbell led Elon over the Lenoir - Rhyne “Bears,” by the score of 13-0. Terry Williams went four for five, while Rin aca, Cliborne, Simpson, and Campbell each had two hits. Williams had five RBI’s, Simpson and Campbell each had two, for the Christians. Elon got out to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the six th inning, the Christians pounded out five more runs. Bob Godfrey sin gled and Jay Simpson reached first on a field er’s choice play. Camp bell then singled, driving in Godfrey. With runners on first and third, and one out, Terry Williams smashed a homerun, his second of the season, and both Simpson and Camp bell scored on the home- run. The last run in the inning came when Ron Brown walked and stole second. Brown advanced to third when Rinaca flied out to center, and then scored on a passed ball by the Bears catcher. Joe Rinaca, Elon’s left-fielder, hit the ball well against the Lenior-Rhyne “Bears.” Joe had two trip les and two RBI’S in the Elon victory over LR, 4-1, at Hickory. Elon scored four more runs in the seventh inn ing to put the game out of reach for Lenoir-Rhyne. Mel Cliborne lined a dou ble, and scored on Jay Simpson’s basehit. Campbell singled and went to second on an er ror by the left-fielder, Simpson scored on the play. Williams followed with his fourth hit in the game, the pinch-run- ner for Campbell scoring. Then successive singles from Joe Morris and Joe Rinaca scored Williams. Campbell allowed only four hits and struck out 13 batters, to make his pitching record one win and one loss. The win made Elon’s overall record 10 wins and five losses, and are five and four in the Carolinas Con ference. Elon Bats To 10-7 Victory Elon defeated Campbell College last Saturday, 10-7, at Campbell. Billy Schultz received credit for the win, making his pitching record 1-0. Campbell scored first in the bottom of the first inning on two hits, one walk and a sacrifice fly by Dan West. Elon scor ed five big runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jim Friesinger led off with a single and stole second base. Jim Houri gan then singled and drove in Friesinger from sec ond. Mel Cliborne fol lowed with a basehit and Jimmy Arrington walked. Rick Smith also drew a walk and then the Camp bell pitcher threw a wild pitch, allowing another run to score. Billy Schultz got on first base when the Campbell third baseman made an error, Schultz being credited with an RBI. Curly Hazelette drew a walk, but two successive Elon batters made outs ending the inn- '"^lon scored another solo run in the top of the fifth inning. Joe Rinaca led off with a basehit and stole second. Jim Houri gan singled, driving in Rinaca from second. Campbell came back in. the bottom of the seven th inning, scoring three runs. The first batter led off with a single and the next batter walked. Elon Loses 4-3, Hourigan HR's Elon lost a tight play ed ballgame to High Point College 4-3, Thursday, April 16, at High Point, High Point struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bob Hicky and Dave Mitcham smashed back to back dou bles off Elon’s Gary Brown. Nick Perlozzo singled and Ron Slinger- man drew a walk. Mark Gebricke flied to center getting an RBI. Elon came back in the top of the second with one run on one hit. Jimmy Friesinger led the inning Wayne Ingle then came to bat and hit a homerun off Schultz, Ingle getting three RBI’s in that inn ing. In the top of the eighth, Mike Welch sin gled and then Bob Detur off with a homerun, mak ing the score 2-1. The Christians scored an other run in the sixth. Jim Hourigan, Elon freshman catcher from Fairfield, Conn., smash ed a homerun, making the score 2-2. Elon also scored another run in the seventh inning, on two High Point errors, a walk, and a basehit by Curly Hazelette. High Point came back in the bottom of the se venth to win the game. Mark Gebrike smashed a homerun leading off the inning. Mike Jones hit a double and scored on Bob Hicky’s basehit, making the final score 4-3. Gary Brown got the loss but struck out eight High Point batters. Dennis Miller received credit for the win. Miller struck out four Elon batters followed with a homerun. and walked two.
