Smash Out 12 Hits
The High Point “Pan
thers” defeated the Elon
“Fighting Christians”,
last Friday, by the score
of 9-2, at Elon.
High Point jumped out
to an early start, by scor
ing one run in the first
and two runs in the sec
ond inning. Mark Ge-
bricke and Fred Grice
hit homeruns in the sec
ond inning, putting High
Point out in front, 3-0.
High Point scored four
additional runs in the
fourth inning. Ron Slin-
german reached first
base on an error and went
to third on a basehit by
Mike Jones, Capps then
struck out Jim Taylor
and Fred Grice hit
safely, driving in Slin-
german. With runners on
first and third, two outs.
Jack Curling’s pinch-
runner, broke for sec
ond. The throw from
Jim Hourigan, sailed a-
way and Fred Grice scor
ed on the error. Bob Hick
ey reached first on an
other Elon error, and
another run came across
the plate.
Mark Gebricke, High
Point’s left-fielder, hit
his second homerunofthe
ballgame in the fifth inn-
ing. High Point added one
more run in the sixth
inning, when Jack Curl
ing walked, and scored
on successive basehits
from Bob Hickey and
Dave Mitcham.
Elon scored their two
runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning. Jim Hour
igan hit safely, and
scored on Mel Cliborne’s
double to left-center.
Cliborne advanced to
third on a sacrifice fly
to right field. Cliborne
then scored on a ground
ball hit to shortstop, af
ter the throw went to
first.
Mark Gebricke led the
Panther batters, with four
hits in five appearances,
with two homeruns, Mike
Jones went three for four,
and Fred Grice went two
for four, with a home-
run. Jim Hourigan led
the Christians in hitting,
getting three hits in four
place appearances. Jim
Hourigan and Mel Cli
borne each had dou
bles for Elon.

herd’?”
The Ettriek .“Shepherd is the
name by ■\vhirh the Scottish poet,
James Hoff ^1770-1835) was
known. He Va^^ born in Ettriek,
Scotland, and inherited the occu
pation of shepherd from his family.
His verse celebrated Scottish rural
scenes and Celtic folklore.

the Elon batters with
three hits, and three
RBI’s.
Elon jumped on Camp
bell’s starting pitcher,
Denny Weaver, along with
loose play from the field
ers, with five runs in the
bottom of the first Inning.
Jim Morris started the
inning off for Elon with
a basehit. Mel Cliborne
drew a walk, and Jimmy
Friesinger reached first
on a fielder’s choice play,
but an error was made by
the second baseman, all
runners being safe on the
play, and Morris scored
on the error. Cliborne
scored on a passed ball.
Jim Hourigan walked,
which forced in a run.
Rick Sm ith reached first
on another Campbell er
ror, and scored on Ron
Brown’s double.
Campbell came back
for three runs in the top
of the second. Joey Da
vis singled and went to
second on another single
by Bill Pulliam. Tom Ev
ans, who replaced Denny
Weaver on the mound in
the first inning, drew a
walk. Bob Young reach
ed first on a fielder’s
choice, one run scoring.
Harold Ingle also got to
first on another fielder’s
choice play, another run
scoring.
Elon added two more
runs in the bottom of the
third. Joe Rinaca laid
down a beautiful drag bunt
and beat it out for a

the Christians added

the scoreboard. Rick
Smith reached first on
an error and then stole
second. Ron Brown got
his third hit of the ball
game, driving in Smith
from second. Jim Ramsey
followed with a walk. Jim
Morris hit a fly ball to
right, which scored
Brown. Mel Cliborne fol
lowed with a basehit, the
runner from second scor
ing on the play.
Ramsey walked two and
struck out five, while the
Campbell pitchers, walk
ed five and struck out
two Elon batters.

Elon defeated Guilford
College 5-3, last Satur
day; making it the second
time this season that Elon
has defeated Guilford.
Gary Brown received
credit for the win.
Guilford jumped out to
an early lead, scoring so
lo runs In the second and
third innings. In the sec
ond inning, Rick Wilson
reached first on an er
ror, and later scored on
Mike Jones’ basehit. In
the third inning, Randy
Burrell led the inning
off with a basehit, John
Parker sacrificed, and
Burrell scored on a base
hit by Jay Terrell.
Elon bounced back with
single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings. In the
fourth inning, Joe Rin
aca hit safely, and scor
ed on Mel Cliborne s
triple. In the fifth inning,
Gerald Campbell hit safe
ly and advanced to third
on a Guilford error. Jim
my Friesinger got a base
hit scoring the runner
from third with the tying
run.
Guilford scored the go-
ahead run in the bottom of
the sixth inning, on three
successive basehits and
an Elon error. But the
Christians came back
with two big runs in the
eighth inning, and a solo
run in the top of the ninth
to win the ballgame. Joe
Rinaca and Mel Cliborne
led the eighth inning off,
with successive basehits,
and then with runners on
first and third, and no
outs. Bob Godfrey lined a
basehit through the in
field, scoring Rinaca
from third. Ron Brown
then sacrificed, and drove
in Cliborne from third
with the winning run. Elon
scored an insurance run
in the top of the ninth inn
ing, when Joe Rinaca hit
a triple, and scored on
Bobby Godfrey’s double.
The leading hitters for
the Christians were: Rin
aca three hits, Cliborne
three hits, and Godfrey
with two hits. Godfrey
led the team with two
RBI’s.

odist College, and Elon
freshman pitcher, Billy
Schultz made his over
all pitching record one
win, and one loss.
Methodist scored their
two runs in the bottom of
the fourth inning. Dick
Mclnnis hit safely and
Roy Henderson reached
first on an error. Flet
cher Poulk also reach
ed first on an error,
pushing Me Innis across
the plate. Grady Alexan
der then hit a sacrifice
fly to center-field, scor
ing Roy Henderson with
the winning run.
Jim Friesinger scored
Elon’s only run of the
ballgame. In the top of
the sixth inning, Frie
singer reached first on
a Methodist error, and
went to second on a wild
pitch. Bob Godfrey
grounded out to the sec
ond baseman, and then
Mel Cliborne drove Frie
singer in from third on a
sacrifice fly.
Terry Jeffries had a
double for Methodist, and
Mel Cliborne had a dou
ble for Elon.
