Elon won the first game 7 to 4 and the Elon Women Cagers Claim Second State Title And Clinch Third In Regionals By Janie McGann On March 6, the Women’s Southern Regional Basketball Tournament got under way here at Elon College. Both gymnasiums were used and many students helped by guarding doors, keeping time clocks and records, moving things, and being hostesses for the tournament. The Elon women cagers played their first game against South Carolina on Thursday morning, March 6. The second game the Elon cagers participated in was Thursday at 6 p.m. against Winthrop College. This game shook the fans because the score was close and the women made several fantastic plays, ending with a victory by a score of 83-77. By the close of the evening, the cagers had taken two victories and were waiting for their next game against Tennessee Tech.. which was played Friday evening. While Elon played Tennes see Tech. in the Memorial Alumni Gymnasium, the other two teams in the winning bracket played in Jordan Gymnasium. The teams playing in Jordan Gymnasium were Union and Memphis State. The crowds cheered for the women as they started their games at 7 p.m. Friday. Tennessee Tech scored first and had four points before Susan Yow made the first two points for Elon. The second half of the game brought real excitement as Elon began to rebound, more the ball, and hit their shots. Tennessee Tech began to foul a great deal and the Elon score began to rise. The second half of this game can be described as “Steals Galore,” because the players were pressing Tennessee Tech and getting the ball more and more. When the clock read three- minutes, the Elon cagers had 52 points and Tech had 65. The crowd was screaming, the players were excited, and the aggressive plays went on. As time ran out, Tech began to draw some fouls on Elon and picked up some additional points which brought defeat to Elon. The final score was Tennessee Tech 73 and Elon 63. Although the cagers were defeated, they played a game that will be remembered. In the other game of the evening Memphis State was victorious over Union by a score of 77-73. Tennessee Tech and Memp his State met on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the championship game. Tennessee Tech took the victory with a score of 73-61. They also took first place in the tournament, leaving second place for Memphis State and third place to Elon. The women cagers received the bid to the National Small College Tournament. This year, the women went farther than ever before. They took first place in the state tournament and third place in the regional and had the opportunity to play in the National Small College Tournament. Congratulations to Coach Kay Yow and her players for a season of hard work and for a job well done. ACC Championship Ends With Carolina Victory Over N. C. State 70—66 By Bill Dawkins Last weeks ACC Tournament in Greensboro was the most exciting tournament ever held in its twenty-two year history. The champion, Carolina Tar Heels, had to capture two overtime victories to get to the finals, where they defeated the reigning ACC champions N.C. State 70-66. The Tar Heels enjoyed outstanding perfor mances from freshman Phil Ford, the tourney’s most valuable player, and from Walter Davis, Mitch Kupchak, and Brad Hoffman to capture the title that had eluded them since their 1972 championship season. In opening round action, Carolina defeated Wake Forest 101-100 in a wild and wooly opener. The Heels came from eight points behind to send the contest into overtime. Walter Davis scored 31 points and Ford had 25 points to take scoring honors. In the second game of the opening rounds, the Clemson Tigers won their first opening game in eleven years by defeating Duke 78-76. In the final opening-round game, N.C. State, behind David Thompson’s record-sett ing performance, roared out to a 22-point lead only to see it drop to 10 at half-time. After Thompson’s eighth point, which gave him the ACC career scoring record, the Wolfpack lost their fire, allowing the Cavaliers, behind Wally Walk er’s 31 points, to pull within one at 84-83 late in the game. Thompson and Towe scored the final seven points in the Pack’s 91-85 victory, sending them into their key battle with number one seeded Maryland in the semi-finals. Thompson’s 38 points and 10 rebounds keyed the State victory. The Wolfpack, in their best performance of the season, defeated Maryland in the first second game 4 to 2. posting an early season 2-0 mark. Under the leadership of Head Coach Bill Miller and Assistant Coach Mike Osborne, the team looked impressive and ready to go for 1975 action. Head Coach Bill Miller had a few comments about the game. He said "We had good defense but our hitting was not too sharp. We committed a few errors which cost us runs and hits. However, we will have a real fine ball club.” In my talk with Assistant- Coach Mike Osborne I learned more about Sunday’s contest. In the first game Elon won 7-4 behind the pitching of senior Kent Smith. He was the winning pitcher giving up 2 hits, 4 runs, 10 strike-outs and walked four. "The play of the game,” semi-final game 87-85 while Carolina, who almost didn’t make it through the opening round, squeaked by in overtime. In the finals, Carolina beat State 70-66 to take the title and the trip to Charlotte for the automatic berth in the Eastern Regionals. Carolina built up leads of nine and eleven points, but Slate rallied behind Carr and Rivers to pull ahead each time. Carolina, however, held on 70-66 to come out victorious. Carolina will meet New Mexico State, 20-6, and the runner-up to Louisville in the Missouri Valley Conference at Charlotte in the quarter-finals of the Eastern Regionals. Maryland, regular season ACC champs and ranked 7th nationally, will travel to Lubbock, Texas to meet Creighton in the Midwest Regionals. Clemson will go to the NIT in New York. N.C. commented Osborne,” was an error by West Virginia Tech. We had two men on and a long fly ball was hit to their center fielder who dropped the ball and we scored two runs taking the lead 5-3.” Again, Elon won the first game 7-4. In the second game, Scott Gorman was the winning pitcher who lead Elon to a 4-2 victory. He gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, had 10 strike-outs and walked two. There were two runs for Elon which were special runs. Doug Williams scored one run and only needs two more stolen bases to get a school record while A1 Breed scored another run, the first home run in his collegiate baseball career. The Christians will play Mars Hill at Mars Hill March 18th at 1:00 p.m. The next home game will be on March 20. ' '‘■s ' Al Breed, a senior from Lorton, Va., and David Williams, a senior from Maryland, are pictured above after Al knocked his first collegiate home run over the fence.
