April 16, 1975 pring ports By Gary Spider, Sports Editor Greater Elon Golf Tourney to Be Sponsored by SAM April 24 By Gary Spitler The Society for the Advancement of Management, better known as SAM. will sponsor the 1975 Greater Elon Open Golf Tournament on April 24 at Shillelagh Golf Course. There is a S4.00 entry fee for the one-day event. Trophies will be awarded to the top man in the low gross and handicap divisions. This contest is open to faculty, staff, students, and the entire administration. The 1975 golf team members may not participate. It is easy to register for the event. All you have to do is go over to Room 203 of the Student Center (Student Activities Office) and sign up for the tourney. You need to leave your name, extension number, and what time you can play. It's as easy as that. The Calloway system will be used in determining the winner. For par or less you scratch. A one over par to 75 constitutes a reduction of one-half your worst hole. 76 to 80 means that you are allowed to subtract your worst hole. 81 to 85 constitutes a reduction of your worst hole plus one-half the next worst hole. 86 to 90 means you can deduct your two worst holes. 91 to 95 means you can subtract your two worst holes plus one-half the next worst hole. 90 to 100 you can deduct your three worst holes; 101 to 105 — deduct three and one-half worst holes; 106 to 110 — deduct your four worst; 111 to 115 — deduct your worst four and one-half holes. 116 to 120 constitutes a reduction of your worst five holes and 121 to 125 constitutes a reduction of your worst five and one-half holes. The 17th and 18th holes do not count in using this system, meaning that you can deduct any holes except 17 or 18. So. go by the Student Activities Office in the Student Center today and sign up for this one-day event — the 1975 Greater Elon Open. By Gary Spitler The 1975 golf squad is having another good year. With a lot of the season gone the team now holds a 10-1 record. Fighting Christian Golfers Holding 10-1 Season Mark Morningstar. the team hopes to keep posting wins so they can advance to the nationals. Coach Morningstar. when asked how the seaon was progressing and what to expect, commented, ”We have not had a tournament win yet and have played in bad weather. Our golfers have not been playing up to their expectations. We are hoping that we will have it together in time for the district playoffs at the end of this month. We have been playing 12 players on a rotation basis so each player would get the opportunity to play. One of our top players, David Braxton, has one of the best averages. As a whole, we have been playing poorly in tournament play which has cost us. I feel that we will look pretty good going into the district playoffs. If we win the district, then we've got the nationals," concluded Coach Morningstar. The next home golf contest is scheduled for April 21 against High Point and Guilford. This will be the last home contest before the district tournament. Coach Morningstar is assisted by Coach Chuck Harris. been active since 1958 when it was established by the Student Government Association. The student group endeavors to cultivate an interest and understanding of the humanities in both the college and the community. The symposium is free of charge and credited for college programs. By K. Pate This year's tennis team has produced an excellent season with a record of 6-1 with the most recent victory over UNC-G. The six players who compose the team are: Glenn Smith, captain and number one player. Glenn is a senior and comes to Elon from Westfield. New Jersey. The second man is Ed Berryman, a senior from Sanford, N.C. Rob Strange, third player, is a sophomore and comes to us from Brunswick. Georgia, The fourth player is Barry Baucom. a senior who lives in Charlotte, N.C. Freshman Mike DeLuise, who is having an excellent first season, is playing fifth man and comes from Kinston, N.C. The final player is Collins Terry who is a senior from Roxboro, N.C. The rest of the team makes a solid back-up for the playing team. Coach Don Kelly, the new coach this year, says he has an excellent group of players for this season. Following Elon's victory over Catawba. Elon has gone on to capture four wins. The first was against Lenoir Rhyne who were crushed 9-0. This was followed by another stunning victory over NCCU, 7-2. Elon then shut out Guilford 9-0. In their most recent victory Elon outplayed UNC-G. 8-1. The Christians will face Guilford at Elon on April 24 at 2:00 p.m. All students are urged to come out and support the team in this contest. Susan Yow Named to 1975 All-American Basketball Team—One of Ten in U.S. By J.E. McGann Susan Yow has been honored as one of ten of the top women's basketball players in the United States and is the representative for North Carolina. Susan has played three years for Elon. The Eastman Kodak Company chose the players, and they also are in charge of choosing the All-American men's team. When leaving Friday morning early, Susan said, "We traveled to Harrisonburg. Virginia and watched the national tournament, where seven of the ten players chosen for the All-American women's team played. After the tournament, the women traveled to Washington and the Kodak Company was really nice to us as they gave us a camera with our emblem on it and five rolls of film which will be developed free of charge. They also paid for the motel and food bills while we were in Washington. " In Washington, the giris got together at a banquet. Susan said, "The first thing we did was have a team picture made, and awards were given. Each girl received a plaque on which all our names appeared. We have a basketball to be put in the Hall of Fame. We also were given a nice white sweater." The women left Washington Sunday evening, and Susan Susan Yow, 1975 Elon women's basketball team star, has been named AII-AmericaB for her excellent play this season. arrived home late Sunday night. Susan said that the trip was fun and a good experience and she expressed her appreciation to the Eastman Company and their generosity.
