September 25, 1975 The Pendulum Page Three Elon scores with new arrivals In addition to the morning hangover, the parking situation piays a mi^or part in the daily trauma of malting it to class. (Photo: courtesy lA ECNB) About town: New lot loses to the streets by Mike Christie Another fall semester is underway at Elon and it has started with flying colors: brunettes, blondes, and redheads. This institution of higher learning has always had certain standouts, but apparently Admissions has gone above and beyond the call of duty in adorning the campus with female freshman inhabitants. Over the first few days we at The Pendulum have, with much pain and strain, observed these new arrivals with great concern and unanimously hold a high opinion of them. We felt that by David Wood Have you ever wondered who the members of the Elon Board of Trustees are, where they are from, how they got where they are, how they feel about the present-day Elon student, and what they think about the issues that face us today? Students interested in finding out will be glad to know that The Pendulum staff will be conducting a series of personal interviews with various members of the board beginning in the next issue. The Pendulum staff has Systematic “ by Diane Costa Appealing to children's imagination and mind, and catching the child at the ripe age of 2'/i are the ground-floor operations in Dr. M. N. Artley's unique eleventh annual String Enrichment Program, which began Monday. The Atley Method emphasizes rote ear-training through singing, clapping, and marching response games. The structure is child-centered around what the child already knows. ■'Goodie, goodie, gumdrops” tells the pupil the equivalent rhythmic pattern for four sixteenth notes followed by two eighth notes. Marching exercises demonstrate dynamic levels — step lightly or step like an elephant. Through a sequence of songs included "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Hot Cross Buns," students learn to march and bow at 2‘/4 or 3, and by 5 or 6 they've progressed to sight reading music through a color coded tonal system followed by a single color tonality, rote to note. The unique' aspect of starting ear training and music theory with toddlers on a violin is that it can grow with the child. A two and one-half year-old begins on a 1/16 size body violin, all of eight inches long. Aiming this instruction at the "nouveau " youth affords less "impediments such as dating, television, schot)l and the like," explained Dr. Artley. The program alsti provides i>n-the-ii>b teacher training for Dr. Artley's string majors, although it was "started to bring string instruction to Burlington City Schools almost twenty years said Artley. "The system, in my miml. is all sequenced. it wouldn't be fair to express only our views, so this ‘‘on the go " reporter was out and gone interviewing innocent bystanders for their impressions. Unfortunately, because of the specifics given, some interviews had to be dropped and various parts deleted. First, a male freshman; Q: Young man, are you pleased with the freshman girls? A: Yes, very much so. Q. Are you surprised by so many attractive girls here? A: Yes, very much so. Q: What types do you prefer? expressed hopes that these interviews will be informative and beneficial, not only for the students, but for the board members as well. "It's obvious that there has been a lack of communication between students and the board for as long as anyone around here can remember," says Paige Garriques, editor. "Perhaps we can begin taking steps to alleviate this long-ignored problem. If you have questions or ideas you would like expressed, drop by the Pendulum office and let us know," she added. Ability is always a greater factor than age," Dr. Artley pointed out. The need for a new and better method of instruction was evident to Dr. Artley back in the "covered wagon" days when Suzuki was experimenting with a method dependent on a strong Eastern mother -child relationship in which the mother worked right along with the child and Paul Rowland was developing his ideology t>f string instruction. Dr. Artley had his own ideas and ideals to formulate. The system has paid off for the former students and teachers. One is a student assistant to Artley. Fred Lail. Another of his first students is currently a music education major at the college. With goals as high and f;u--reaching as developing a keen ear ami sense of rythmn the String Enrichment Pnigr.im has a large hid tomaite. A: Blondes. Q: Why blondes—because they have more fun? A: No, both my wives are! Q; Thank you sir, for your time and insights. We also conferred with an upperclassman: Q: How would you compare the incoming freshman girls with the upperclassmen? A: There are some definite and obvious improvements. Q: Do you plan to date any in the near future? A: 1 wouldn't mind it. Q:Any other words you would care to leave with us? A; What ever happened when I was a freshman? To balance out this interview we tried to talk to five of these gorgeous, gifted gals and find out what they thought of their male counterparts. But five guys back home also thought they were gorgeous and gifted, so all were taken and none had any interest in the guys here. Will this be the same in May? Stay tuned. Names were left out of the interviews to protect the innocent or not. Once again congratulations to the Admissions Office on a job well done, and please keep up the good work! The program is available to children of all faculty, staff and students for S30 for one child. S40 for two and SIO a piece for three or more children in the same family, plus a S5 per student instrument rental fee. by Fred Caudle The Redcoat Lounge, located in the Hilton Inn on Huffman Mill Road became almost a tradition with Elon students on Thursday nights during the spring semester of 1975. Fw this reason this nightspot has been selected for the first in a series of articles about where to go for entertainment in the Burlington-Greensboro area. Returning students will remember that Thursday nights were "Elon College Nights" with cover ctvirge being only one dolhu* for men and free fw ladies. by Lance Latane All commuters know the thrill of the "where the hell do I park my car" game when they get here for morning classes. And they are also becoming aware of the local police reaction to their parking maneuvers. Of course, the new college parking lot behind Huffine's Texaco is an alternative to parking along the town streets and it offers off campus parking for the off campus student. Yet the use of this facility costs commuters SIO. The streets are still free. According to Elon Police Chief Henry Hilliard, his department issued about 60 traffic tickets the day classes started here. The following day their total slipped to some 40. Hilliard said, "On the first few days they park everywhere. We hate to give tickets, but we have to when there's a violation."
