The final draw-
Elon vs. Guilford
by Gary Spitler
The 1975 Fighting Christians
have once again dashed into a
new season. Elon lost the first
contest 33-31 to a strong Norfolk
State squad, but bounced back
for a 37-13 win over the
Savannah State team in Georgia
last Saturday. The gridders face
arch-rival Guilford this Saturday
afternoon in Burlington
Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time
is 2:00 p*.m.
Before 7.000 screaming fans.
Elon controlled most of the
Norfolk game until the fourth
period when the Spartans began
taking advantage of Elon's
mistakes. Howard Ferguson.
Phil Beeson, Martin Page, Ron
Reitzell and Bunny McMillan
were some of the standouts of
the contest.
In the second seasonal bout
Elon traveled to Savannah State
and came back to EJon
victorious, 37-13. Howard
Ferguson, one of the standouts
of this year's squad, at the
runningback position, carried the
ball 18 times for a smashing 173
yards—an average of 9.6 yards
per carry. Wes McLaughlin.
Eddie Foust, Randy Oxendine.
and Mark Heil contributed
outstanding defensive
performances.
This Saturday at 2;00 p.m. will
be another one of those exciting
Guilford giimes. The Quakers
won over Emory and Henry
32-14 last week, abtwt the same
winning margin as Elon
collected. Coach S. S. "Red"
Wilson looks at the upcoming
game as a game which both
schools want to win badly in this
the last contest between the two
schools, since Guilford is
dropping their football. Guilford
will make their appearance this
Saturday in one of the oldest
rivals in football contests of this
area. Game time 2:00 p.m. for
the game of games—Elon vs.
Guilford.

“Showband of the Carolinas”
proudly presents “The Stripper”
by Reed Alexander
The 1975 “Showband" will
once again flash through another
halftime show this Saturday at
the Elon-Guilford contest. If you
really want to be turned on, be
sure to attend this game. The
"Showband of the Carolinas"
will give you a sensation as the
majorettes "do their thing" to
that well-known hit song—"The
Stripper". It's a real gas of a
sight to behold, especially after
the majorettes take off their
gloves!!
Yes, the band comes through
again as they play four songs at
once during one number. The
band will perform precision
marching that will knock your
eyes out. The highlight will be
Mike Brown, twirling champion
of the Southeast, as he attempts
a record 102-foot toss with his
baton into the air. The band will
offer other COOL surprises
Saturday afternoon for your
enjoyment. Be there for the
STRIP!!!

The 1975 version of Elon's
stKcer team will kick off the
season October 2. with a
formidable opponent, the Tar
Heels of North Carolina. The
soccermen. to add to this
difficult task, play the game at
Chapel Hill. The first home game
of the year will be on
Homecoming. Oct. 11 against
Catawba at 11:00 a.m.
Soccer has been intercollegiate
here for only three years and has
had Dr. Charles Harris at the
helm each season. Over that
short period, he owns a 6-14
win-loss record, which is
impressive for this short time
especially with a lack of
scholarships for stK-cer.
The team, which lost only
three seniors to graduation,
posted a 4-4-2 slate last season
and should show more success
than in prior years. Harris says,
■'I think overall the team will be
much improved on defense. If
we're lacking anywhere, it is at
offense positions." Offensively
the team does have two
sophomore standouts. Norm
Downy and all-conference Don
Ritter, and sophomore Bunny
Carr. The goalie this season, says
Coach Harris, "is the best we've
ever had at Elon." He is a
freshman and his name is Greg
Hamilton.
Part of the season's schedule
has already been mentioned but
there remain many home giimes.
Other meets are scheduled with
Guilford. UNC-G, and High
Point. The team has a total of ten
games this fall.
The others on the team
working Just as hard are Diago
Haste, Tony Tilley. Bill Gurtney.
Les Hall. Richard Donnick, Pete
Rufton. Ronny Jackson, Steve
McCord, Keith Blackburn.
Rustv Lemar, Joe Homer. Gary
Finch, Warren Womble and the
only girl on the team Ellen Reep
Two people who don't get much
recognition but are stilfan asset
to the team are the managers
Robin Okey and Johnny Allen.
