Holding first place in the SAC-8, Elon will go into action this Saturday afternoon at 2 in another conference contest. Elon blasted Bluefield State before a packed stadium in a homecoming affair and then traveled to Clinton, S.C. last week and defeated the Blue Hose. Both teams battled throughout the first half in the Presbyterian game to end the first half without a score from either team. Elon scored in the third quarter as Prince Deese ran from three yards out to put Elon on the board. The PAT failed and the battle got even stiffer. Later in the fourth quarter Howard Ferguson plunged in for the score from the four-yard line. The PAT again failed, and the defense kept either team from scoring to end Elon's second conference encounter 12-0. This week in Burlington's Memorial Stadium the Indians of Catawba will battle the Fighting Christians of Elon in another SAC-8 contest. Under the leadership of Bill Faircloth, the Indians will bring a strong nucleus of a team from last year. Some standouts for Catawba are Kim Smith and Ron Adams in the backfield along with return guards Eddie Whitt and Vernon Hayes, tight end Kent Rabon, split end Vince Haydock and halfback Allen Simmons. Their strong defense will meet Elon's strong defense in what should be a big conference bout. In the Carolina game Joe Curtis scored the lone goalie for the Fighting Christians. In both games freshman goalie Greg Hamilton played exceptionally well despite the high scores. He had 37 saves against Carolina and numerous others against Pfeiffer. Defensive credit must also be given to Bunny Carr in the Carolina giime, even though the team lost both matches.
