Page 3 The Pendulum April 15,1976 Elon College Festival Day-April 10,1976 Bicentennial activities feature parade, bands, doggers by Weston Parker Large crowds lined downtown Elon College Saturday, as the town "festival day” was kicked off at 10:00 a.m. A parade led by a Marine color guard marched into the Elon business district, followed by the Elon Middle School fife and drum corps. Floats, Boy Scout units, and more color guards aired the Bicentennial theme, with more music from the Western High School Band. At 11 o'ilock a one-act historical comedy, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere," was presented in Whitley Auditorium. A picnic on the north end of campus pft)ceeded in the midst of an art-photography exhibition, with music by the Elon College band. Across irom Harper Center, the new gazebo was dedicated with a performance of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" by the Elon College band and choir. Mayor T. L. Smith and College President J. Fred Young spoke briefly about Photos bv Joe Chandler •Letters- iConiinued from page 2) has been tried, convicted, and suspended from school this year for cheating. Too bad that is not representative of the amount of cheating that does occur. Wish that it was. So what is the point of all this? Believe it or not, there are schools where the Honor Code is an honorable one. Ripping people off has become an American way of life, so what's a little cheating going to hurt? The individual must decide somewhere and sometime what constitutes right and wrong. Perhaps now and here is as good a place in time as any. A review of the Elon honor system was made in March by visiting students involved with the judiciary system at the University of Virginia, a place where the system does appear to work. There are no easy answers, no instant solutions. It's an individual choice and decision, one that must not be taken lightly. The reasons for the success of the honor system at other institutions may probably be attributed to many factors, such as competitiveness and sense of fairness, or perhaps to the caliber of student. It is the latter that one hopes is not the community cooperation between town and college, bringing about the erection of the new gazebo. Later, Bicentennial games, such as sack races and old fashioned basketball, were provided under the direction of Prof. Janie Brown and P.E. majors. By middle afternoon, Lebanon Street was blocked off at the south end of the campus, and the Western Express Jazz Ensemble displayed their talents. This joint celebration of Bicentennial and the town’s birthday concluded with dancing in the street by the Western Kids and the Elon Middle School Cloggers. 4 case. Regardless, it is a problem which needs a solution. Most people on this campus do recognize it to be wrong and hold it with proper contempt and distaste. All should recognize cheating as wrong, whatever form or fashion, avoid rationalization and compromise, and then make a decision, bearing in mind that one must always live with the decision made. David Wood To the Editors: I would like to express my appreciation to the SGA for the concerts they have brought to Elon. They were a pleasant change of pace from the everyday routine that we all get into, and hopefully the SGA will sponsor more of them. Jane Booth To the Editors: I have a criticism regarding the sports section of the Pendulum. Since I've been here I've noticed that during football season the football team got three-fourths of the pages, and the soccer team and girls volleyball team received the other one-fourth. (Continued on page 4) SGA presidential candidates, Moore and Smith deHne platform Sam Moore: 'The number one problem is that there is not enough student involvement,” Sam said. "And the reason for this is that students don't feel the SGA does enough for them and that it's a powerless group, so why should they get involved?" But Sam doesn't want to give up. He believes the SGA can be a powerful group. ’’With $60,000 to back it up, it has the potential to move in any direction. The main problem is that it's hard to be outspoken; therefore, we must turn to positive and constructive legislation. Once the students become content with the SGA, we can pull together on the Board of Trustees," he said. Sam would like to move ahead with some positive steps toward satisfying student needs. Two concrete ideas that he feels pretty confident will work out concern the entertainment committee and the honor system. Next year, he would like to try something new.The SGA could fund a steak dinner for students with $1000 to the ARA Food Service. Then the armory Barry Smith; "Apathy,” said Barry Smith, SGA presidential candidate, "is one of the main problems here at the college. If we are going to bring any changes and make this a better college, disinterest has got to go." It is his view that student interest and participation will make Elon a more rewarding experience and con.sequently will increase the power and stature of the Student Government Association. "We have to understand that there is strength in unity, if students stand behind each other, accomplishments can be made. Students must unite, the history and political science major said, because "changes must be done through the system." Barry cited the failure of the board of Trustees to approve the SGA s drinking proposal because only approximately 38'^f of the student body appeared at the polls. "It's my opinion," he said, "that quite a bit of progress was made, but we were hurt because just such a small percentage of could be rented for a dance afterwards and a band provided by the SGA. This wouldn't run more than $5000 which is a big cut from the $18,000 currently spent for concerts. Sam goes on to say that for the big concerts, the SGA can go in with other area schools to book a top name group to play in Greensboro. Buses could be provided to ride out to the concerts and, once there, students would have more freedom than they do in Elon's Memorial Gym. Profits would be cut, but overall he feels this is a more practical idea. Secondly, Sam would continue the revamping of our present honor system. A change will be made to a different banking system, and a bad check committee will be set up to prevent overdrawn checks from ruining the students' credit unnecessarily. This will also improve student-merchant relations within the community and help those with out-of-state checks. Besides these things, Sam said, "I would like to set up a committee which consists of one students voted. The board took this as an indication that the students just don't care." To be an effective organization, Barry said that his strategy is, "first getting the students to voice their opinions and then to get them to stand behind their opinions. This can only be accomplished through legislation in the student government." Barry said. There is a lack of respect for the SGA by the administration because it does not have the backing of the student body. We can accomplish something if the students get together." One way Barry plans to develop support for the SGA is by structuring a more applicable entertainment system. 1 would restructure the entertainment committees under one head which will coordinate all activities so they can be spread across the calendar rather than appearing sporadically." Concerts need to te reevaluated, he said. ’Tiess than 50'; of the student body by Paige Garriques student from every walk of campus life plus a few faculty and administrative members. This committee would sound out all proposed ideas and a decision could then be made on a consensus representative of all opinions." When asked about the former plans to run with Barry Smith as announced in an earlier edition of the Pendulum. Sam said, '1 don't know why Barry decided against being my running mate. I don't believe it was due to any difficulties as far as policy goes —just a personal decision he had to make. Although it came as a shock to me at first, I guess that's politics." In concluding, Sam said, '1 want the job because I feel that I have the drive and imagination to do it. I'm outspoken and aggressive enough to stay on top of the administration and work for the students' interests. But I'm not all-knowing and I'm sure I'll make mistakes; yet if people come to me and let me know how they feel, I will listen and honestly try to work things out the right way." by Lance Latane benefits and the SGA stays in the red." He advocates sponsoring big name groups at an increased student ticket price as is done at many colleges and universities. ’If this does not make concerts more profitable here," he says, "then at least we'll break even and therefore be able to offer more." As with student strength, entertainment is determined by student participation and support, Barry feels. "Students must realize that if Elon is to be a happier place and if the SGA is to provide more entertainment, they will have to get involved." Barry hopes that student support can be encouraged through a healthier entertainment system and can then be channeled elsewhere to provide a stronger organization. He is not entirely concerned with social activities however. Recently he authored a bill in the student senate calling for the creation of better health care facilities on campus. Barry says he will also continue the (Continuedon page 5)
